What does your dog do all day?

And what is its breed / age?

Or as an alternative question, if you have a large puppy / adolescent dog, how do you stop him/her from getting bored and creating chaos?

Walks, obviously.
Playing with ball / other toy with a human
Meals

What else?

My Newfie (4 years) sleeps a lot. Most dogs do.

When she wants to be active, she wanders around the garden, yells at people who walk past, pretends she's one of the children by trying to join in their games, and follows me from room to room.

She was never destructive. I suspect my noisy children (at home most of the time as we home ed) have always kept her busy.

Licky mats are good, as are Kong wobblers.

3WildOnes · 27/07/2022 19:25

Follows me around the house, lays by my feet, barks at passers by, potters around the garden.

There is a Facebook page called Canine Enrichment. There will be loads of ideas there. Brain games and longer lasting ways of feeding.

He is a cocker spaniel and he is one year old.

When someone is home he has free run of the house and garden. When we aren't playing with him or taking him out for a walk he amuses himself about the place. He romps around checking that everything is in order and that we are not in imminent danger. This involves endless circuits of the house and garden. He drags his toys about, he gets in fights with his blanket or his towel. He checks on the guinea pigs and all the birds in the garden. He chews on things, sometimes his toys, sometimes other things if he thinks no-one is looking. He chases shadows and he licks the barbecue. He has big and small sleeps. He is a constant trip hazard.

When no-one is home he goes in his crate with his treats and all his toys and does big and small sleeps.

Mainly sleeps

Bananasunrise · 27/07/2022 19:27

1yo lab. Sleeps, follows me about, walks, tummy rubs and cuddles, joins in with the kids’ games, plays with toys, sniffs about the garden, snufflemat and other “brain” toys. Stopped the chewing of the furniture (and walls) now not a tiny puppy thankfully!

Thank you - all really helpful.
I will look at the FB group suggested too.
My young GSD has had a day of being bored and disruptive despite a lengthy walk (he'll have another this evening), time playing ball in the garden with the DC, numerous toys and constant company.
He's flaked out for a bit now!

Lhasa No. 1, she's nearly 15 and she sleeps a lot, unless she wants to go potty which means I am carrying up and down stairs cause she can't do that anymore.
Lhasa No. 2, he's nearly 9, he barks, sleeps and shits.....
Lhasa No. 3, also nearly 9, she sleeps too....

roaringwater · 27/07/2022 20:15

Ours never sleeps during the day unless we are all sitting doing nothing. She’ll literally follow us around from room to room non stop and wag her tail and zigzag around the lawn smelling things and never really sits down for long. She’s gallop for miles on walks too but doesn’t mind if misses one.
She’s 3.5 and a cavalier , I think her main requirement is physical closeness to her family as it makes her so happy being with us and vice versa.

SD1978 · 27/07/2022 20:17

Sleeps. Have a Westie and a bull Arab cross. After their walk in the morning they go to bed and stay there, barring a few trips out to the toilet for the rest of the day

Hellocatshome · 27/07/2022 20:20

Mongrel, Romanian Rescue, sleeps all day. He was described by the dog trainer as "low to no energy" which is a bit unfair as he will walk all day but inside the house he does absolutely nothing.

Isabelle70 · 27/07/2022 20:23

I have a poodle cross 13 years old and a cocker spaniel 9 years. If I am home they will follow me and normally be in the same room as me.
If I am out or at work they sleep at the top of the stairs watching the front door for that pesky postman in his silent electric van...
They have run of the house and garden and the spaniel is hoping some footballs might come over the fence so he can shred them before anyone realises.

shaggpilecarpet · 27/07/2022 20:23

Gets up at 6 am proceeds to be an utter twat till 6 pm ( with walks feeds treats etc in between) yeah I still love him 😁

Perpop · 27/07/2022 20:24

Seconding canine enrichment fb page, learnt so much!

Flaunch · 27/07/2022 20:28

20mo lurcher. Sleeps literally all day apart from any time when he thinks he’s going to get either food or a walk.

shaggpilecarpet · 27/07/2022 20:28

He's a very big chocolate Labrador btw, not my choosing, my husband takes him out for at least an hour and a half a day. He is moulting at the minute the house is covered in dog hair , they are a very big commitment

Could he be overstimulated? If it is a very busy house with children then he might not feel he can or should rest.

Has he got a quiet place and has he been taught how to rest? Such as crate training him, for example.

Our house is quiet and calm, no DC (yet!) and our dog has always been so chilled (since puppyhood) despite being a very energetic breed.

We took her to a dog sitter once who said ‘she has played allllll day long with the other dogs!’ Completely uncharacteristic for our girl. The dogsitter never separated the dogs or gave them a quiet place to rest, I felt terrible for our dog - she wasn’t herself for days after that episode, so manic and wound up, and of course we never went back!

12, cairn, diabetic, blind and deaf, sleeps all day but if the lead and harness moves he's there in a second.

awwbiscuits · 27/07/2022 20:34

7yo bulldog - sleeps. Morning til night. Then sleeps more. Might occasionally get up to have a wee/poo, and get some food/water on the way back to his bed. May also have a funny five minutes where he rolls in his bed until he's comfortable enough to sleep again.
He doesn't like to walk anymore so we don't make him.

WhatTheWhoTheWhatThe · 27/07/2022 20:39

5 year old lurcher sleeps all day and night unless getting up for food or a walk. Does like to sleep in a room where I am though so will pad about the house to relocate to where I am.

Fennellathewitch · 27/07/2022 20:39

Hi I have GSD just curious how old is your yours?

jammiewhammie65 · 27/07/2022 20:41

6 year old rescue lurcher loves to sleep. I take him out twice a day and he loves a run around the woods but soon as we are home he goes back to sleep. His the easiest going dog I've ever had and his gorgeous Wink
