And what is its breed / age?

Or as an alternative question, if you have a large puppy / adolescent dog, how do you stop him/her from getting bored and creating chaos?

Walks, obviously.
Playing with ball / other toy with a human
Meals

What else?

3 yo swiss shepherd, walk x2, sleeps, follow me around, plays with kids, but her favourite past time is to watch the world go by from the patio window, sleeps next to my bed at night. She was a nightmare at fist, got her when she was one, literally ate a massive hole through the front door, chewed furniture etc but with training she is very chilled now. Loves her treats and like a PP dogs pretends to do a wee to get one!! She saunters from room to room, opening the doors herself.

idiotmagnet · 28/07/2022 00:31

Laughing at all the sleeping lurchers! They are indeed the perfect house dogs!

11 year old cocker spaniel. Wakes me up at 6. I try to resist her standing on the bed peering into my face and smashing her tail on the headboard. I give up, let her out, go back to bed. Nope thats verboten, so get up have my breakfast while she naps in her bed happy that schedule is under way Constantly on the move, every time I get up she follows me. She has her own strict timetable in her mind that has to be stuck to , she seems to have a clock in her brain to, and until every item on the list is ticked off she wont go in her bed and rest. Im unfortunately home all day so this is relentless !

thereisonlyoneofme · 28/07/2022 10:46

Also she does not play with ANY toys and has about 5 teeth so cant give her Kong things/chewy treats etc. Brain on overdrive all the time. Will swap for greyhound

SunshineLoving · 28/07/2022 10:47

My border terrier is 12. He sleeps for most of the day upstairs and sometimes goes in the lounge too.

He has a nice walk every day which he loves. Lots of sniffing.

As soon as he hears the back door open, he will come running as he loves pottering around the garden when you're out there with him hanging clothes out and stuff. He'll sunbathe for hours on his own when it's sunny.

He'll have his licky mat, chews, Kong, play with toys etc sometimes in the evenings.

When he was younger, he would have two walks a day if he seemed to have lots of energy. He'll still have two walks now if he seems like he needs it. We also did lots of training in the day, when we had some time, when he was younger and he would have had more chews and things to keep him occupied.

troppibambini6 · 28/07/2022 10:49

A lot of this!
Also chew toys, tennis ball, and just generally following us round and getting under our feet.
He loves to curl up on my lap for a sleep he thinks he a chihuahua rather than a 23kg staffy.

LightandMomentary · 28/07/2022 10:50

Sleeps, all day. Wakes for food and walks or when the fridge opens for human food. Otherwise passes out again. He's a ridgeback who gives no tosses about anything and is huge.

BeanieTeen · 28/07/2022 10:52

6 year old collie cross has two big walks a day and sleeps the rest of the time mostly. We’ll play ball for a few minutes each day. Favourite place to relax is in the garden. Will occasionally bark at seagulls if they fly over or chase away a pigeon. Dogs do generally need about 18 hours sleep.

I have a 7 year old rescue greyhound whose days are broken down something like this:
20 hours resting/sleeping
1 hour walking
30 minutes eating
2.5 hours telling us about her feelings, asking for walks, supervising cooking in the kitchen, looking out of the window, playing with toys, stealing shoes. What a great life!

In all seriousness though, there is a balance to be struck between ensuring a dog is well-exercised and enriched, but also making sure that they have enough time to rest and recharge somewhere relatively peaceful. Even for more energetic breeds that could be 14-16 hours a day. 6 months is still a pup so it might take a while for that routine to settle!

Blossomtoes · 28/07/2022 11:10

Three year old Jack Russell who potters about the house, sits on the footstool and watches the goings on outside the front window and sleeps a fair bit. She gets a long walk across fields or round a lake every day and wears herself out by playing chase with every other off lead dog she encounters.

Frequency · 28/07/2022 11:11

Rottweiller cross, 1 year old and Chihuhua 6 months old.

On my working days I get up ay 6am. The big dog gets walked 6:30 to 7 15. If we meet his labrador friend they run riot off leash. If we don't he just mooches about sniffing things.

The chihuaha gets up and comes downstairs when we get back and they spend about an hour chasing each other around the garden and playing with toys.

They then sleep, usually until lunchtime and then the chasing each other around the garden starts again for around an hour.

They repeat the pattern of sleeping/chasing until 8pm when I finish work and then they are both walked together for around an hour. They spend the rest of the night sleeping but will sometimes wake and play "bitey face" where they lay on the floor and mouth each other's faces.

None working days is the same but with a later but longer morning walk and an afternoon training/play session.

She can be an absolute feral knobhead outside the house but luckily makes up for it by being the best house dog 😍

troppibambini6 · 28/07/2022 12:13

Just lost him for a full 5 mins then just found him hiding in my ironing having a nap

16 month old lab/hound cross rescue here

Term Time:
Quick walk morning as he's up early with the kids
Long off lead walk lunchtime (I have an off lead park near me where he meets his doggie friends!)
Medium walk evening (beach usually)
Playtime in evening with kids

School Hols:
Long off lead walk lunchtime as above but longer to make up for the fact that he sleeps all morning!
Medium walk evening as above (loves getting an ice-cream down the beach!)
Playtime in evening with kids

In between all that he's either sleeping or getting up to mischief! He will also be out for hours with us down the beach/harbour/coffee shop/ice cream parlour, particularly at the weekend. He will also play with the kid's friends when they are over too (which is a lot).

He is definitely living his best life 😀

hopeishere · 28/07/2022 12:19

One year cocker m

Sleeps and follows me around!

caringcarer · 28/07/2022 12:31

My 2 follow me about, run in and out of large cat flap and play in large garden and then mostly snooze. 4 years old Lhasa Apso's

MerlinsButler · 28/07/2022 12:33

@troppibambini6 ha ha. He looks so much like mine.

Mine has his own little routine depending on weather and whether I'm in my office or sitting downstairs.

Morning walk for hour then he has free range of house and garden so he will:
Patrol perimeter of garden to keep out neighbourhood cats
Engage in daily battle of wills with the magpie and pigeon that visit the garden
Sleep
Watch tv
Sleep on window sill so he can watch for intruders (post man mostly)
Search for his hidden treats and snuffle mat
Pop upstairs to check I'm working
Lunchtime walk
Afternoon nap on our bed
Try and play with our cat
Afternoon mad 10 mins of games
Sleep more.

He really likes to sleep but if I'm sat downstairs he will sleep on me. He weighs 30kgs. Lol.

Fluffygreenslippers · 28/07/2022 12:34

My dog is a low energy staffy. Once he was past 6 months he was fine laying down all day. He is very active on walks and a sloth in the house. He’s 12 now.

Friffle · 28/07/2022 12:42

My little scruffy mixed breed delight is now 19. He goes for a short walk every morning which he still gets very excited about, sniffs about the garden, does a lot of snoozing, and sits by his dinner bowl optimistically from 3.30pm until his dinner is actually served at 5pm.

Spidey66 · 28/07/2022 12:45

3.5 year old border collie (female)
2 x long walks a day, minimum of 1.5 hours each. Sometimes we just walk, sometimes we play. She likes tennis balls, bubbles and frisbees. Occasionally she will play with other dogs but BCs are notoriously aloof so this is less often than before. If another dog approaches her she will sometimes snarl at them if she doesn't want to play and they wont get out of her face. She does sometimes approach humans, and in particular enjoys the company of human puppies, who she realises like playing bubbles with her.

She potters round the garden, and plays with a hard plastic ball which harnesses her chasing and herding instincts. She barks to all the neighbours dogs, but only when she's in the garden.

She runs up and down the hall and will show us all her toys and will play catch or tug of war with her soft toys.

She is obsessed with the washing machine and tumble dryer and will stand in front of them when on and squeals with excitement when it's time to empty them. She looks at washing machines in other houses eg when visiting or on holiday in self catering property. We were in St Ives earlier this year and our walk into town went passed the launderette. She would start squealing with excitement before we walked past it and would drag us in there to gaze at the washing machines. She's still grieving Dot Cotton.

She sleeps for short periods but during the day is awake in a shot if we move in case she's missing something exciting. If she sees us putting on shoes and coats or picking up keys she knows we're on our way out and always want to come as well. It's heartbreaking if we're going to Tescos or somewhere we can't bring her.

Spidey66 · 28/07/2022 12:51

Washing machines are so fascinating!

Lolliepoppie · 28/07/2022 12:59

4 yo cocker spaniel.
Morning cuddle. 90 mins walk.
Rest of day spent following me around hoping for treats.

SelkieSeal · 28/07/2022 19:38

12 month old collie x labrador

Wakes up when I do (usually about 6am), out for a quick wee and to see off any pheasants that are pecking round the garden. Hangs out in the kitchen while I drink coffee and play half hearted tug with her. Breakfast at 7 followed by a walk round the woods, then back home for a good old snoozle til about 11am.

Spends the rest of the day variously...

  • following me around
  • snoozing on the sofa
  • watching birds through the upstairs windows (very important task)
  • snoozing in doorways
  • bringing us toys and putting them into our hands then staring hard at us until we give in and play
  • eyeing up the cats and cautiously approaching to sniff them (but leaping back with a pre-emptive yelp if they so much as move a paw)
  • sitting under the table while I chop veg in the hope of getting a carrot end or brocolli stalk
  • running round the garden very very fast for no reason
  • catching flies
  • snoozing in DS room while he plays Minecraft and gives her a running commentary

Then dinner at 5.30 followed by an evening wander round the field and snoozing next to me while I watch TV or work.

Lots of snoozing, basically. Interspersed with intense playing and running.
