What does your dog do all day?

roaringwater · 27/07/2022 19:19

And what is its breed / age?

Or as an alternative question, if you have a large puppy / adolescent dog, how do you stop him/her from getting bored and creating chaos?

Walks, obviously.
Playing with ball / other toy with a human
Meals

What else?

Saint. Sleeps most of the day, will change sleeping position throughout day. Very chilled out dog. Almost 2yo. Doesn't do high energy - thank goodness!!

dudsville · 27/07/2022 20:47

Sleep. And during my zoom meetings they dream out loud, so lots of barking and sometimes a fart.

Reallyreallyborednow · 27/07/2022 20:49

Follows me around.

barks at the door/people cutting across the field behind us.
hunts mice.
moves his chew sticks from one hiding place to another.
actually chews the chew sticks.
pretends to wee every half hour to get a treat.
polices the cat- goes out to hunt mice with her, stops her scratching the furniture, sits and watches her eat.
greets any family member coming back in like he hasn’t seen them for years. About 10 mins of squeaking and rolling on his back.
hides his toys.

manages to keep himself busy quite easily.

She watches the chickens. Her comfiest bed is next to the patio doors so she can curl up in there and keep an eye on them. When we are home she can free roam in and out of the garden as she wishes and she tends to be outside in the garden sniffing about and pottering. She will occasionally bring us balls to throw for her and keeps an eye on whatever we are doing. She’s a 15 month old border collie, and an absolute dream around the house 99% of the time.

limitededitionbarbie · 27/07/2022 20:55

Mine used to sleep all day as I wfh and couldn't play with him all day. I got him a mate, they just play fight all day now. It's annoying as they are a bit noisy but I'm so glad we got him a friend.

Hopeandlove · 27/07/2022 20:55

Eldest - Daddy is 9 and sleeps and potters around the garden. Will follow a human around if they are home. Wees, eats, barks at anyone ringing a bell, listens to radio. Plays with son. Fights for attention

Younger- son is 5 and does all the above and plays with daddy. Fights for attention . Rocks himself on the rocking chair etc

they sleep with paws around themselves unless a human is home - they jump on sofa or bed and curl next to them if they are home.

forgot to say they both follow food and therefore the child and their friends if they are away

puppygalore · 27/07/2022 21:02

2yo Lab, she only really ever dozes if I sit still and do nothing for a while (which is hardly ever!) otherwise follows me from room to room or explores in the garden. She goes to daycare and is the same there, lots of the other dogs will sleep but not her and her Lab best mate!

She can be destructive if I've not walked or played with her enough, so that's on me, but she'll only go mad on bits in the garden like old tree branches and overgrown bushes that I give her free reign over. Usually 1-1.5 hours walk (plus regular fetch sessions throughout the day) is more than enough for her and then she'll happily follow us around or else be lounging at our feet, but not sleeping. It suits us fine as it means by the kids bedtime she's bushed too and will get some deep sleep while I do bedtimes and then she's very happy to be left to sleep all night after a toilet break.

In the house she has not been chewy on furniture/shoes etc since her puppy days thankfully. I do provide toys and brain games but tbh she'll chew her way through anything, even those so-called 'indestructible' toys. Lickimat and snuffle mat chomped, expensive black kong toys chomped, frisbees and tennis balls...you can guess. She has some long lasting (ha!) natural chews but they're very rich and she has a sensitive tummy so they only come out on the long rainy days to give her 20 mins chill time! I often buy a bag of cheapo soft dog toys off eBay just for her to pull them apart, it kills a bit of time and makes her so happy when she gets the stuffing and squeakers out and luckily she never eats the bits, just displays them proudly Grin

Mariposista · 27/07/2022 21:07

2 year old lab mum here! Yes, he can be full on but he has calmed down now he is a bit older and fortunately isn’t destructive. If I am sat doing something calmly, he sleeps but shoots up the second I move (thinking I might get him some food). When he is alone he sleeps, patrols the house.
He gets a lot of exercise and we play with him too. If I go to a cafe, I take him and he behaves really well in public.
What type of dog do you have?

adviceatthislatestage · 27/07/2022 21:29

We have a 16 month Hungarian wire haired Vizsla.

Has a 2hr walk/run in the morning and then usually sleeps on and off all day. DD does brain games with him later in the day and / or takes him to a secure field in the evening for an hour or so.

If I'm wfh, he has run of the downstairs and garden. He patrols the garden and shoos away the wood pigeons and magpies who dare to land on what remains of the lawn Hmm

He has plenty of toys, is given pigs ears/yak chews as a treat. He's not normally fussed by Kongs although will scoop out a stuffed one if we go out.

He's is never left longer than 4hrs and has a variety of places to sleep, including his crate.

He was a real bugger as a puppy and almost broke us, but actually he was never much of a chewer compared to other dogs we know, occasionally he ate plants and dug up the lawn instead.

He is maturing into a loveable gentle doofus of a dog, who brings us shoes/ trainers from the box every time someone comes through the door or downstairs- even if we were only out of sight for a few minutes!

What does your dog do all day?

Fennellathewitch · 27/07/2022 20:39

Hi I have GSD just curious how old is your yours?

@Fennellathewitch mine is 6 months old and to be fair, usually very good. He likes following me round the house and hanging out in the garden. We're lucky to have loads of great walking from the doorstep so I'm happy he gets enough physical exercise but I want to make sure his brain is ticking over too!

10mth old mini poodle.

  • goes on a 5 mile round trip walk to the beach, chases balls and seagulls on the beach- maybe 2-3x a week- she then sleeps for hours afterwards
  • chases balls in the garden
  • eats cooked chicken thighs from a conch or kibble from snuffle mat. Also have kibble in a ball puzzle thing she rolls across the floor to get a treat
  • We are renovating- so finds random bits of plastic, insulation, rocks, lids etc to chase and chew
  • Absolutely loves to 'help' me dig plants OUT of pots I have just planted them in!
  • Tries to eat manure fertiliser from the bag, and newly potted plants!
  • sleeps on a cool mat now its hotter
  • If not on the cool mat, likes to sleep laying right across my legs whilst I'm WFH or sitting right on me- blocking my screen!
Welshrarebitontoast · 27/07/2022 21:59

Allthecoolusernamesaregone · 27/07/2022 22:04

I have a 9YO Cocker Spaniel.
As I am home a lot of the time he sees it as his job to be beside me whenever I open a cupboard door or the fridge, so he can stick his nose in.
He very much likes to bark at the postman ( now have outside box as he also like to grab the post and shred it).
He has a long walk on the lead once or twice a day. If he wasn’t on the lead I would now be out looking for him.
He normally sleeps on a chair or the sofa, but will sometimes make an exception and lay in a doorway as a trip hazard.
He will look out of the window, see a member of the family, and then bark at them until they come in.
He guards the floor under the table when we are eating in case a dropped piece of food should have the audacity to try to land on the carpet. We don’t have the 5 second food rule here, as we have a 1.5 second dog.
He sometimes amuses himself by pulling food packaging out of the bin.
He likes to howl along to a harmonica.
He is currently laying on his back with all feet in the air with his head turned towards me, and I wonder if he knows I am writing about him.🙂

the 14 year old dog is unwell and cant move much. she sleeps alot, i carry her to the garden and she moves slowly.

the 8 year old dog plays with toys eats to much and sleeps alot. and goes on walks.

wish they were pups again.

crispinglovershighkick · 27/07/2022 22:19

This time of year they cycle between boiling their heads in the sun and cooling themselves on the tile floor.
When our (elderly) rescue lurcher gets bored and hungry and starts pestering we set up scent games in the garden which seem to tire him out. Trainer suggested dragging a prawn or chicken bone in an L shape and leaving a treat at the end of the scent trail. We hide prawns under small plant pots. Also Whimzees filled with wet food and frozen: www.whimzees.com

8mo Lab

Still young so I'm sure this will change but At the moment, as long as she's had a decent walk in the morning, ideally involving a tear around with some dog friends too, she's pretty chilled and happy sleeping and mooching until about 4ish (with the odd spot of training or enrighment). Then she is ready for another walk (and pooh), usually do about 45 mins. After that she comes home and sits in the kitchen staring longingly at us with her saddest eyes, waiting for her dinner. Once she's scarfed that, she has a bit of a second wind and starts bringing toys over to us just as I'm trying to make dinner so she has a long lasting chew or a kong til we've had our dinner. Then we'll have a game of tug and some silliness and then she's usually ready to settle down for the night.
If we dont give her the walks, bits of training, chews/enrichment, she does get destructive!

19 month old staffy,

If I'm working and it's a school day .

Me and two kids (5&7) get up and take him for 2-3 miles walk which takes around 1.5 hours before kids get bus to school.

I work 4 hours

Dog just sleeps on couch.

I then run with him as we do canicross

He also does scent classes once a week and I practise 3 times a week.

If I'm not working (only work twice a week) he comes where I go , running, horses and just dotting about.

He was caged until 5 month when left alone but then left in house after that as I felt he too big to be stuck in a cage.

He has full run of house and sleeps on my bed upstairs or down in living room when we put mostly

I have cameras so can watch him

Rupertgrintismyguiltypleasure · 27/07/2022 22:43

Other than the walks she goes on, she has a rotation of different rooms and the garden. Plays in between...

MinglingFlamingo · 27/07/2022 22:43

According to her PitPat activity tracker FlamingoDog on average potters around for 4 hours, walks for 80 minutes, sleeps for 16 hours, plays for 5 mins runs for 10 mins.

In reality she walks for 80 mins, sleeps for 20 hours, emerging for food, poops and the occasional squirrel which comes into the the garden

She is 5 and a small cross breed

rickandmorts · 27/07/2022 22:59

Our lurcher spends the day snoozing on various beds and sofas and then gets a run on an evening. Then resumes upside down position on a sofa. She's 3 and the best dog ever 😍 definitely has her moments but is an amazing house dog.

onmywayamarillo · 27/07/2022 23:13

4 yr old lab
Up out garden sniff, follows me about. Walk long lots of running at 1ish
Garden action
Food 3/4pm
Garden action
Sleeps at 8/9pm

But currently she's camping with us and is bloody exhausted from all the stimulation and begs me to go to bed at 8pm 😀

Namechange303333311 · 28/07/2022 00:02

Sleeps 95% of the time we are home. She gets up to eat and drink and to pop in the garden about 10 times a day, hangs around if there’s cheese or meat around and comes for a cuddle a few times a day where she falls asleep again. She’s 10 but has been like this since I got her at 5.

Things like kongs, chews, learning new tricks and playing games are good if your dog needs occupying indoors.

Chocolatesandroses · 28/07/2022 00:06

I have a pug who is 3 . He sleeps on us , likes to be near us all the times. Plays with toys , plays with us , enjoys having his tummy rubbed. Maybe one of them kong toys that you can put treats inside or the one you can put like dog peanut butter in it , that keeps them busy

Christinatheastonishing · 28/07/2022 00:14

My GSD matches the energy levels of the household. If we're lazing around, or I'm WFH, she will sleep (and fart). All day. She's 10 but has always been like that.

When she was younger she'd spring up when one of us did and start looking around for fun things to do but these days she barely lifts her head for the delivery man. She's very animated at meal and walk times and that's it.
