What does your dog do all day?

And what is its breed / age?

Or as an alternative question, if you have a large puppy / adolescent dog, how do you stop him/her from getting bored and creating chaos?

Walks, obviously.
Playing with ball / other toy with a human
Meals

What else?

Our year old black lab would like to play indoor fetch with tennis balls all day long if you’d let him. If there’s no one willing to play, he’ll chew his antler, bone or horn, have a snooze in the doorway, have a snooze on his sofa, nip outside and bark at his mega ball until I take it off him, have a snooze on the patio, jump on the sofa that he’s not allowed on and squash us into a cuddle. That’s it really, he’s very calm in the house and you can forget he’s even there sometimes! Sometimes he plays football in the garden with DS and he’s walked for at least an hour and a half a day unless it’s too hot.

Will walk and adventure for as long as I'll take him. Rolls in mud, jumps in then sea, then rolls in sand. Has a shower. Flumps down on the floor for a sleep but is awake in a flash to bark at anyone who comes to the door. While wagging.
Bit more sleep. Then up like a shot when cheese or yoghurt is extracted from the fridge. The rattle of the veg peeler also sends him into a frenzy - loves carrot peel.
Golden retriever.

Retired greyhounds, she mainly sleeps, sleeps and sleeps. If we didn't insist she goes for a walk she'd happily sleep all day. She is literally me in dog form and I love her beyond words.

hiredandsqueak · 28/07/2022 21:14

12 year old lhasa apso, outside of walks and food she either sleeps or she guards the perimeter ensuring nothing encroaches on her space be that human, animal or bird. She would be a fantastic guard dog if she could sustain it but in essence she fits in the guarding around her sleep

GeriTheBerry · 28/07/2022 21:19

8yo whippet. Walk, snuffle round the garden, cuddling up with the kids. But mainly SLEEP.

FanGurlll · 28/07/2022 21:20

Look into using his brain - training sessions, trick training, training games, scent work..... I have a working breed, she is usually quite chilled if she's had to use her brain!

fbdodbcidjdbcb · 30/07/2022 01:20

Well today just barked all fucking day at nothing.

Love him, he is a chihuahua but a big one. Not a traditional looking chi. He's a deer head.

So he sounds annoying. He has been an arsehole all day. Chewed barbie shoes and boots, barked, then randomly pissed on me when I was also having a wee!!

Great Danes they sleep, piss and shit
go for walks twice daily plus have zoomies daily
eat there food
cuddle up to you
try and sit on you
think they are small dogs
All trained at a very young age including green cross code

DangerouslyBored · 30/07/2022 03:54

We have two. DH and I WFH so they generally
entertain one another, lots of play fighting, chasing each other around the garden and lots of napping. Weekends are spent hanging with their humans and not as much napping, lots of long walks but again, lots of playing. They just love to play together. It’s much easier and much more
fun having two. I would never go back to one.

I have a 9 month old GSD. He goes for two walks a day, sometimes a short third walk if it's not hot, so rare. He sleeps a bit, but only in his crate, if he is on his bed he will get up if anyone moves and follow them, especially me. He likes to watch people through the window and darts around the garden looking for squirrels. It's school holidays, so the kids are home, and he is enjoying interrupting their games, especially all the bubble play, and water games my autistic 10 year old likes. He likes find it games, and hunts for his favourite toys when my children hide them, and also, lies to,sniff out treats hidden in the garden. If he is overstimulated he hpgets time in his crate with lickimat which helps calm him down.
He is at the age now that he has started barking at new people coming to the house.

I love seeing pictures of other people's dogs. Beautiful, all of them (though my Maggie is obviously the best,.)

I have a five year old miniature dachshund. She follows me around all day and is on my lap as soon as I sit. We usually walk twice a day, play fetch and tug of war a couple of times a day. Spends the rest of her time guarding the garden. She only sleeps lightly during the day.

BeyondMyWits · 30/07/2022 15:11

11 year old Westie, eats, pootles about, sleeps, barks at birds, throws me a toy when he wants to play, reminds me he needs feeding again with a long stare, ditto when he thinks he needs a walk, little play after teatime, then sleep.

TooHotToTangoToo · 30/07/2022 15:16

2x terrier cross - sleep mostly, have the occasional tug of war and wrestle. Dh takes them out for a good 5 miles in the morning so they are easy as pie to look after

TooHotToTangoToo · 30/07/2022 15:17

All the dogs I've had sleep about 16 hours a day, a good walk and they should be easy

easyday · 30/07/2022 15:23

Mine just hang out. Sleep, look for cuddles, take a wander around the garden.
When younger they played together more but they are (still feisty) 11 and 13.
I trained them early on to be left on their own, but didn't get dogs until I was at home most of the day. On the odd occasion I'm out for a long time they sleep - or at least don't make any noise as I asked the neighbours!

Leonberger · 30/07/2022 15:39

Other than walks/training my GSD spends all day following us, patrolling, checking we are doing what we should be doing, supervising the cat while it sleeps is another favourite past time.

The leonbergers sleep, have a 5min zoom in the garden and then sleep. Repeat all day long.
