Just been thinking it's a while and I might make one.

Anyone know any fabulous recipes?

Was one of my late DM’s favourite desserts and she would often buy the Sainsburys one in her last few years when she was no longer able to cook properly (plus it’s a big dessert to make for 1). I also love it and last had it about 6 months ago in the pub.

hugoagogo · 27/07/2022 21:31

It is yukky stuff, I haven't had any since primary school.
Bread pudding is lovely though, I can't get it around hereSad

FarmCat31 · 27/07/2022 21:33

I’ve never had a bread and butter pudding but I love bread pudding - either my mums or the local Nash’s bakery.

Really easy to make, @hugoagogo. www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/bread-pudding-0

Today, I buy Aldi’s and eat it all to myself, without custard or anything

BotterMon · 27/07/2022 21:41

Years ago but it was a lovely one made with Panettone and chocolate.

BoreOfWhabylon · 27/07/2022 21:46

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g I agree that bread pudding is a glorious thing. I use my Granny's recipe, which involves soaking the bread in water, not milk, before squeezing all water out. Also no eggs. Still absolutely delicious

Snugglemonkey · 27/07/2022 21:46

I have never had it. I was given it once when I was a child and it had dried fruit of some kind in it, sultanas maybe? I hated dried fruit and always have and looking at it made me feel sick. Still now if someone mentions it I get a shudder.

BoreOfWhabylon · 27/07/2022 21:48

Savoury B&BP is lovely with a teaspoon of mustard powder in the egg/milk mixture

NancyDrooo · 27/07/2022 21:52

I make chocolate orange b&b pudding. Slathered in butter and marmalade and covered in chocolate sauce with orange zest mixed in.

I hate raisins so don’t like the original version but this is lovely. Stems from the Delia recipe.

Annoyedwithmyself · 27/07/2022 21:54

Ages, but I made a sort-of one out of leftover sponge cake (I think it was a tier of a bday cake that sank badly so I remade it)... egg, milk, sugar, cocoa and chocolate bits. Bloody lovely!

Cannylaughs · 27/07/2022 21:54

A really tasty receipe.

White bread , crusts off and buttered.
Then spread ginger preserve on each slice.
One layer in a a tray.
Sprinkle with rasins.
Another layer of bread, butter and ginger preserve.
Another sprinkle of raisins.
Mix a 1/4 pint of cream 1/2 pint of milk with an egg and 2 big table spoons of sugar. Pop it in the microwave for 2 minutes and stir again.
Poor over the bread.
Sprinkle cinnamon ontop.
Pop in the oven for 1/2 an hour.
Then eat.
The added ginger preserve is just delicious. Try it.

I genuinely feel sorry for people who don't like dried fruit. I love raisins, sultanas and currants. I like the idea of chocolate b&b pudding, but the classic type is so good I'd prefer that on the whole. Unfortunately nobody else here is keen on it. Sad My mum loves it and often choose that if they have a meal out.

Queen of Puddings is not a million miles from a classic b&b pudding. I haven't had that for decades.

pointythings · 27/07/2022 22:32

It's been about 44 years, since I was made to eat a whole mouthful as part of school dinner.

After that I slipped my classmates my share. Can't stand the stuff.

dubyalass · 27/07/2022 22:57

I bloody love it. I made a Cornish version with saffron loaf when I had an old one in the freezer that needed using up. Followed this recipe and it was a winner. Must make it again this winter.

A few months ago. I make it with Panetonne

AdoraBell · 27/07/2022 23:02

About 10 years

That’s what a thought! I got the impression some replies were thinking it was the other way round.

Both are totally different, bread pudding has a lovely firm texture. Bread and butter pudding is eggy and just horrible.

No, no, no, it is you that has got it the wrong way round.

Bread pudding is nasty, whereas bread and butter pudding is delicious.

TitInATrance · 27/07/2022 23:13

About a year - love it and it’s easy to do, but difficult to make for one. 6 weeks ago in a pub, dreadful stuff like summer pudding with no fruit, just slices of white bread and butter stuck together with a few tinned apricots, doesn’t count.

I like the savoury version too but I breadcrumb the bread for that one (stick everything in a blender, then bake).

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 28/07/2022 00:34

I make them with chocolate chips any time we have bread that’s gone stale before we’ve had a chance to eat it. Tastes amazing and is insanely cheap and feeds the family twice!

MrsBwced · 28/07/2022 00:43

Twelve years.
We had a year where we went to seven weddings and bread and butter pudding was served at six of them.
I can't stand it, the texture makes me do that loud Paul O'grady dog food video heaving noise.
To add insult to injury two of the weddings served a different dessert to the men. DH was best man in one and gleefully waved his cheesecake at me from the top table, he hates bread and butter pudding too!

Govesdancingpartner · 28/07/2022 00:52

60 +years disgusting stuff

AuntTwacky · 28/07/2022 01:19

Love it!

RoseMartha · 28/07/2022 01:32

Several years

mistopheles · 28/07/2022 01:45

20 years ago? But I used to LOVE it as a child.
