How long is it since YOU had a bread and butter pudding?

Just been thinking it's a while and I might make one.

Anyone know any fabulous recipes?

OP posts:
knittingaddict · 27/07/2022 18:48

Probably a few months. I love them, but not so much in hotter weather.

There is a difference between bread pudding and bread and butter pudding. I never eat bread pudding. It always makes me wonder if those who say they don't like it are imagining bread pudding.

Goldenphoenix · 27/07/2022 18:48

About a month ago - had white bread I wanted to use up! Was absolutely delicious with double cream.

I adore the bread pudding my DM makes. But bread and butter pudding makes me want to heave.

I love a sloppy slice and a firm slice. My local bakery does an amazing firm slice that I have a piece of every month or so.

honeybeep · 27/07/2022 18:50

Hang on bread and butter pudding is the sloppy stuff and Bread pudding is the firm stuff. I like both.

I have never tried it . Am I missing out ?

Very much so

PancakesWithCheese · 27/07/2022 18:46

Hang on, what’s the sloppy stuff compared to the firm slice?

Bread pudding is served cold (usually) and is a dense slab.

Bread and butter pudding is slightly soggy/crispy with more eggy custard.

RaraRachael · 27/07/2022 18:55

I love bread and butter pudding (just called bread pudding in our house) but we never got it growing up as my mother didn't like it. I used to have a lovely recipe from the massive book by Mrs Beaton which I've since got rid of, but failed to copy the recipe.
Sometimes I just buy a Tesco one and eat it all by myself - because I can!

knittingaddict · 27/07/2022 18:55

Really old style bread pudding was frequently made with water rather than eggs and milk. 😯Most recipes don't have butter in it either.

TimBoothseyes · 27/07/2022 18:57

Never. It looks disgusting.

Blossomtoes · 27/07/2022 18:58

We love it in this house. We use Mary Berry’s Mother’s recipe.

Five years ish, it was a banana jam one. It's very nice if you make it with stale jam doughnuts.

maddiemookins16mum · 27/07/2022 19:08

I make it regularly in the winter, sometimes with hot cross buns too.
I love it.

I also make bread pudding for lunch boxes.

florianfortescue · 27/07/2022 19:09

I love it. I add Baileys and apricot jam.

A580Hojas · 27/07/2022 19:10

I've probably only eaten it 2 or 3 times in my 50+ years. There are other hot puddings I much prefer.

Arenanewbie · 27/07/2022 19:13

OP, I’ve sort of improvised: buttered 8 slices of brown bread, sprinkle with grated cheddar, put together, quartered, arranged in Pyrex dish, whisked 4 eggs and 300ml of milk, pour over, pressed all over, sprinkled with more cheese and put into the oven for 25-30 min ( 180C).
I haven’t got much variety of ingredients and needed to use up bread and cheese. We ate it outside with fresh salad and it was lovely, it’s started to rain so even more fun ( we were partially covered).

I adore sweet bread and butter pudding served hot with vanilla ice cream. Try to avoid it due to weight issues.

About 30 years. Vile stuff!!

newtb · 27/07/2022 19:14

It's lovely made with croissants and Cointreau added. Delia's winter book has a recipe for a chocolate one.

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 27/07/2022 19:18

Wow, haven't thought about it for decade+. I used to really love it and make it all the time. It's so simple to make, and you can make it from everyday stuff you always have, and so easy to add extra stuff to make it even better.
I stopped it because of my dc's allergy. But I do really fancy it now.

That’s what a thought! I got the impression some replies were thinking it was the other way round.

Both are totally different, bread pudding has a lovely firm texture. Bread and butter pudding is eggy and just horrible.

Arenanewbie · 27/07/2022 18:30

last Sunday, I’ve had some brown bread and cheddar cheese leftovers so did savoury bread and butter pudding. It went really well.
The sweet one probably a couple of months ago.

In a recent fit of fridge clearing meanness I made a sort of cauliflower cheese and line pickle savoury bread and butter pudding. Effing delicious.

AppleBottomRats · 27/07/2022 19:43

Ooh a few years. We used to have it served regularly as a pudding when I was at uni and it was one of my favourites, but I hardly ever make it myself since we don't buy white bread - sometimes make it at Christmas with leftover pannettone.

GenialHarryGr0ut · 27/07/2022 19:45

I always make one at Christmas.

Cover each slice generously with ginger jam as well as butter and so soak the currants in ginger wine and add slices of chrystalised ginger as well.

Iheartmysmart · 27/07/2022 19:48

Bread pudding is amazing, well my mum’s is anyway. Bread and butter pudding is horrid.

BarbaraofSeville · 27/07/2022 19:52

Slightly baffled at the concept of bought bread and butter pudding. The whole point of it is to use up stale bread.

I made an amazing one earlier this year with the last of a massive M&S chocolate chip panettone that I bought reduced a few weeks after Christmas.
