Is it not better value to buy a pie that serves 4 people rather than 4 individual pies?

Why are you eating so much processed food (and meats that are full of nitrates?)

I know you didn't ask for a debate on the healthiness of your food shop, but the amount of white carbs and processed meats is quite unhealthy.

I agree that it would be better value, yes. I wanted a pie for 4 and they didn't have any, so I bought 2 packs of 2 instead. Which has worked out fine, as we don't always eat together due to work hours anyway.

This shop was not representative of a weekly meal plan, or of our diet in general, so you can rest easy. It was partly a store-cupboard stock-up and much of it won't be used for weeks.

By the way, I only bought green beans and a savoy cabbage because we already had mange tout, onions, carrots, parsnips, leeks and a white cabbage, and we have rosemary, basil, chives, sage and mint growing in the garden. We also already had apples and oranges, hence only buying the lemons, bananas, pears, plums and melon.

OP as an Asian I abhor anybody buying microwave rice! Or uncle ben’s or any of that rubbish. You can buy a lovely 5/10/15 KG bag of pure basmati online and it’s sooo gooood and lasts much longer
*lighthearted of course

TheDuchessOfMN · 23/07/2022 13:21

I would have guessed about right, maybe closer to £100.

It’s very similar to my shopping, except I don’t buy cat food, pies or microwaveable rice, and I buy one bottle of wine and much more frozen skin on fries (I recommend sweet potato, much nicer than plain) than you do.

Aldi is fantastic. I can’t believe people thought £150+ Shock

From the Soil Association

www.soilassociation.org/media/23032/ultra-processed-planet-final.pdf

^Ultra-processed foods also contain ingredients unfamiliar to
domestic kitchens , such as soy protein isolates. Colourings, emulsifiers, flavourings and other additives are added to make the products better-looking, tastier and longer lasting^.

They can also be extremely moreish – or “hyperpalatable”. Foods in this group include most shop-bought snacks, biscuits and cakes, mass-produced bread and breakfast cereals, reconstituted meat products, mass produced desserts, infant formula and some baby foods, yogurts inclusive of sweeteners and artificial colourings, and many ready meals.

Oh, and whoever said a tin of baked beans is processed food - lol.

They are though…

I know they are.

Hands up all those who have ever made their own baked beans.

Aldi angel cake
Sponge (88%) [Sugar, 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐅𝐥𝐨𝐮𝐫 (𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐅𝐥𝐨𝐮𝐫, Calcium Carbonate, Niacin, Iron, Thiamin), Pasteurised 𝐄𝐠𝐠 White, Vegetable Oils (Palm Oil, Rapeseed Oil), Humectant: Glycerol; Raising Agents: Diphosphates, Sodium Carbonates; Preservative: 𝐏𝐨𝐭𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐮𝐦 Sorbate; Emulsifier: Mono- And Diglycerides Of Fatty Acids; Colours: Carotenes Carmines], Vanilla Flavour Filling (12%) (Sugar, Palm Oil, Rapeseed Oil, Glucose Syrup, Rice Starch, Emulsifier: Mono- And Diglycerides Of Fatty Acids; Flavouring).

Sorry But that is rubbish processed ingredients. Whilst I couldn’t make an angel cake from scratch quickly or cheaper, I would just make something else or eat a banana.

scones I made for friends visiting today - flour, egg, butter, sugar, baking powder. Batch of 10, cost about £1, and take 10 mins.

50mg · 23/07/2022 13:25

I make it c. £170, but there's a lot of luxury there. A budget shop it is not.

goingtotown · 23/07/2022 12:50

OP. How much did you pay for 200g Nescafé, it’s £5/£5.50 when it’s on offer in other supermarkets. Did you pick up the Aldi dupe?

Actual real Nescafe £4.49.

No one cares though?! 🤷🏻‍♀️

WildImaginings · 23/07/2022 13:25

Reasonable, and I shop at Aldi!
The cat food threw me along with the meat, because I don't buy either.

OP, IF you're looking to reduce further then my suggestion of reducing meat still stands. You can reduce the amount you have in sandwiches.

Saying that though, I think that's a very reasonable price considering the meat.

PeloAddict · 23/07/2022 13:26

@Caspianberg yes but you can't buy butter and flour etc etc for £1. So if you have only £1 and you want cake, you're buying the processed ones
If you have time and money to buy in bulk, it's easier to eat better

NC12345665 · 23/07/2022 13:27

Are you going to tell us the point of the thread? Were you pleased or horrified by the cost? What did you think it was going to cost?

Onceuponatimethen · 23/07/2022 13:28

That is cheap for all that but I would be really interested to know if the quality is same as Waitrose/better?

takeitandleaveit · 23/07/2022 13:28

Caspianberg · 23/07/2022 12:59

So.. you buy all this stuff for £80 odd, but then come and say ‘ that doesn’t included fruits and veg I buy from greengrocer, eggs from farmer, bread from bakery…’ so like 80% of your shop isn’t included then?

I did a fabulous shop today. Only cost me £2.50.. haven’t brought meat, fish, fruit, veg or eggs yet but..

Well I never said it was a weekly food shop, did I?

My mil and fil have just started shopping at Aldi - they say they like it so far

chocolateoranges33 · 23/07/2022 13:29

£120 in ALdi/Lidl. £140 if Tesco/Asda

Passmethecrisps · 23/07/2022 13:30

I was going to ask where all the booze is but I see I have been beaten to it.

as soon as I saw the list I could have bet my very own shopping trolley worth of food that it would become a thread of “gosh, look at all the money wasted on stuff you could fashion from thin air at home!”

I am impressed with the cost of that shop. I had it at about £130 in my head. We tend to shop across all the supermarkets to pick up things which we prefer (and we live in some sort of weird supermarket Mecca where we have them all within three miles)

this thread is surely not that far away from the old days of MN where people would find lists in trolleys and post them for us all to guess what sort of person was buying those items and what they were buying for.

My money is on… she’s been paid by Aldi to do it. These kind of threads are always about how amazing Aldi is.

You’d think you’d see similar numbers of threads about Lidl, or noticeable numbers of them anyway, but you don’t. MN is always awash with extremely loyal and evangelical Aldi shoppers.

ouch321 · 23/07/2022 13:31

All these comments about how terrible it is that she doesn't make her own croissants or baked beans, ought to be rearing a pig in the garden for ham etc are so funny.

So many people on this website live in fantasyland.

CharlieAndTooManyCharacters · 23/07/2022 13:32

Although I am very much amused by the way the responses have developed into analysing the levels of processed food involved. 🤣

Somethingneedstochange · 23/07/2022 13:33

I think they're point is she got a decent trolley full for less than they were expecting to pay. They weren't just shopping for themselves but a housebound family member who isn't able to cook from scratch.

I guess it depends on the quality of the food.

I remember back at uni a lad finding baked beans from Lidl for 7 pence.

Yep, 7p.

He thought it was fantastic value.

Then he tried them and they tasted pretty bad.

I've found when I visit Lidl that brands on offer are a bargain but most of their own stuff is a bit meh.

There's food and then there's really nice food. Which Lidl doesn't seem to sell.

Yes it might be half the price but if your angel cake slices are full of glucose syrup and other crap and your pack of sliced ham is from a factory farm pumping pigs full of antibiotics you may feel like you got a good deal but I'm not sure your body will thank you for it.

it's still an interesting post.

I think it all depends on the Aldi or Lidl you go to.

we had one of each on the same trading estate and whilst Lidl fruit and vegetables were excellent Aldi was dreadful. But then Vegan stuff was good in Aldi but not great in Lidl
I do prefer Lidl for fruit and veg and the majority of my shop but pop in because Ds likes their vegan pizzas and other vegan stuff they do.
Lidl have amazing large jars of olives and the jar is really nice to put other food items in after. If you can get the lid off without skewering it to break the vacuum.

I don’t buy meat, fish, cakes, biscuits or anything that has pastry
I don’t personally eat beans but others do and they don’t seem to mind them.

We are a family of 4 adults. Dh buys his own meat stuff as he is the sole meat eater in the house but everything else I buy.
I add up each month how much I spend on food shopping and it is around £350 per month and if it edges towards that amount it is because I have just filled the cupboards.

Mostly I bulk buy certain stuff at the beginning of the year. Eg cat litter which is the non branded sifting sort and comes in large plastic bags from a horsey place and gets stacked in the garage, under the stairs and where ever we can put 30 large sacks of pellets.
January is a very full house

Repent, ye OP! Buying factory made cakes like some kind of debauched wastrel.

FOR SHAME.
