Someone has got it even closer now. Kudos to @mcmooberry because I paid the grand sum of £81.32.

£81.32? I need to start shopping at Aldi. I totted up Waitrose prices in my head and it was around £160.

NC12345665 · 23/07/2022 13:45

Whilst I couldn’t make an angel cake from scratch quickly or cheaper, I would just make something else or eat a banana

Or suck a lemon

Caspianberg · 23/07/2022 13:45

There’s no agast about pre made cakes. But there is op mocking people who dare to shop in Waitrose when decent ingredients are important to many.
Some people choose to keep budget by making something at home, other people opt to spend more but get better ingredients in a pre made cake. let’s not pretend that an Aldi cake is identical to a Waitrose finest ( or homemade). Hence why many say the list about might have cost £300 if brought elsewhere.

I would probably care if I could afford to but it's not in my budget so standard meat it is
But realistically how much standard bacon gets sold vs nitrate free?

About 90% has nitrites according to this article www.theguardian.com/food/2022/jul/08/nitrites-in-bacon-scientists-mps-call-for-uk-ban-cancer-fears
If we can’t get nitrite free we just don’t buy it. Bowel cancer is a horrible disease.

Brighteyedtriangle · 23/07/2022 13:48

Probably answered but 100 would be my guess

bridgetreilly · 23/07/2022 13:50

I’ve made my own baked beans. Seriously yummy.

ivykaty44 · 23/07/2022 13:51

The rice packets were 35p

there 50p each in my aldi
this is what I hate about supermarkets, they charge different prices around the country

OooErr · 23/07/2022 13:53

ouch321 · 23/07/2022 13:31

All these comments about how terrible it is that she doesn't make her own croissants or baked beans, ought to be rearing a pig in the garden for ham etc are so funny.

So many people on this website live in fantasyland.

I’ve always been fascinated by people’s eating habits.
My family has always made fresh food (with the exception of bread and instant noodles). Not because we were particularly healthy or anything but frozen, processed food etc in my country is expensive and not widely available.
DP’s family however assembles food from a variety of bits, cold, frozen or otherwise, and always have dessert.

Do the majority of people really not cook from scratch?

takeitandleaveit · 23/07/2022 13:57

I forgot wine, didn't I? And chocolate.

ClassSize2022 · 23/07/2022 13:57

Expensive because a lot is pre made

knackeredagain · 23/07/2022 14:01

I guessed £100 but how long will it feed you for? And how many people? I can’t see too many main meals on there

takeitandleaveit · 23/07/2022 14:04

There's cooking from scratch and cooking from scratch though, isn't there?

OP posts:
PeloAddict · 23/07/2022 14:04

@AppleBottomRats it is but on risk assessment I'm more like to get dementia
Every one has to work out their own risks. I have no family history of any cancer, but dementia is everywhere. And at this point I would rather have bowel cancer and die early than with dementia

MrsLargeEmbodied · 23/07/2022 14:08

cant; work out due to cat food about which i have no idea but i think i reach £100 before i lost the will

FangsForTheMemory · 23/07/2022 14:10

takeitandleaveit · 23/07/2022 13:22

I know they are.

Hands up all those who have ever made their own baked beans.

Yes. There's a recipe in the Food Aid cookbook.

That's because there aren't many main meals on there. We have 4 adults in the house, one of whom has hollow legs when it comes to carbs.

On one day, there will be chilli for instance, but we already had all the ingredients for it except the kidney beans.

well there ham and there is naice ham
how were we to know? <<Sulks>>

JinglingHellsBells · 23/07/2022 14:13

@PeloAddict Surely you would rather avoid both? cancer and dementia? All cancer is thought to be only 5% due to genes, except some types. I know people with cancer where there was none in their family. I know people with dementia where there was none in their family.

Dementia is largely preventative by lifestyle. So are 40% of cancers.

This. I don't normally shop at Aldi or Lidl for one very good reason: I don't drive, and they don't deliver. Waitrose deliver and also the nearest branch of Waitrose to me has a bus that goes virtually door to door.

No idea what that means….

JinglingHellsBells · 23/07/2022 14:17

@Caspianberg If you read the ingredients label of a Waitrose cake, half of it still reads like something out of a chemistry lab. Just because it's from a posh shop doesn't mean it's that healthy! I've stopped buying all cake except for a very rare treat as they are all full of things I don't want to eat such as palm oil and lots of things I'd never put in a home made cake.

I cook from scratch but I still have things like ice cream, cheese, baked beans and cream crackers in my trolley - ain’t nobody got time to make them!!!

Well yes of course! But my Nan died from dementia, my mum died last month from early onset, her brother has just been diagnosed with it, my dads sister has just been diagnosed
It's a massive genetic history in our family so whilst I would like to avoid it...
