Previous owners left bath in a terrible state 😢

I’m absolutely desperate for a good bath after cleaning this filthy house that they left behind.

Unfortunately they left the bath almost as unclean as they left the toilet. 😧

Not sure how well the photo shows but it’s deep scratches with engrained dirt, all the way down. I think possibly they washed their dog in the bath.

A new bathroom is going to have to be on the agenda. (We’ve had four quotes in, all Ā£9.5-9.9k! 😦)

Until we find a magic money tree with £10k on it, is there any way at all to do something about the state of this bath?

Fill it with water and dishwasher tablets and leave overnight?

RandomMess · 22/07/2022 18:13

Bleach

fallfallfall · 22/07/2022 18:13

just clean it. a good bleach soaking, some elbow grease and a good scrubbing.
honestly this in not bad.
pipes backed up and full of shit is bad. scratches are not (hopefully though not cracks that go all the way through).

RandomMess · 22/07/2022 18:13

Some fun stickers that are non slip treads?

Flaunch · 22/07/2022 18:13

Squirt in a full bottle of bleach and fill it with water and leave it over night.

Eileen101 · 22/07/2022 18:15

Bleach in a bath full of water.

Or bleach and a toothbrush for the more labour interested version.

When we moved into my present house, I don't think the bath had ever been cleaned. There was a layer of beige grease that I don't even want to think about again.

There was no way we could replace the bath. We'd over reached ourselves buying the place. It just wasn't an option.

My dad went out and bought a big box of biological washing powder, tipped it in, and filled the bath with hot water.
I'm not sure how long he left it for, but when he emptied it out, what was left behind just wiped away with one of those plastic 'gentle' scourers. It took no time at all and came up spotless (thank goodness).

I can't help with the scratches, but if they're clean at least, that might help.

Macaroni1924 · 22/07/2022 18:16

I used the pink stuff on mine when I moved in as it had scratches with dirt. We are still saving but with regular cleaning you can’t even see them now.

MargaretThursday · 22/07/2022 18:16

If it's just the bath, why can't you replace just the bath? That will be much cheaper.

saraclara · 22/07/2022 18:17

Bleach won't get rid of any gunge in those cracks. It'll just make it look white.
That's why you need biological laundry detergent.

By all means bleach afterwards if you want, but bleach is purely cosmetic in this instance.

Katrinawaves · 22/07/2022 18:23

You can have the bath re-enamelled which will cost a few hundred and tide you over until you are ready to refit the bathroom.

Because sadly it’s not just the bath. It would be like polishing a turd.

love the bleach and washing powder ideas. Going to do one of those right now!

thank you so much all. šŸ¤—

Google

Acrylic bath repair if it's acrylic else fibreglass or enamel

There are plenty of repair kits for all that should make scratches less noticeable

They are all like pasts you cover the scratches with then polish best you can

Though think a new tub would be best if you want as new

InNeedofaBath · 22/07/2022 18:24

Ok I will stick with biological washing powder.

wouldn’t have even thought of that!

when is Mumsnet going to give us our capital letters back?!

Hmm I only have non-bio.

but I do have a tub of Oxy powder. Would that work?

You can get it recovered

I paid £200 to have my large shower tray redone as it had really deep scratches and was damaged by some chemicals
took about 2-3 hours

looked like new after

this wasn’t who I used
but it it’s along these lines of resurfacing the bath / shower / sinks

A bathroom doesn't need to be £9/10k, you can buy a full suite for less than £1k, tiles, shower & fittings £1k, tradesmen £1k, total £3k

Lots of washing detergent and fill it with hot water. It should be useable tomorrow.

How disappointing. I just cant understand people who do this. Our last house had a toilet that wasnt even fixed to the floor!

oranmore · 22/07/2022 18:31

I don't necessarily think it's the previous owner's dirty habits. This just looks like a very old, very well worn bathtub that needs replaced.

An overnight soak in bio washing powder followed by a good scrub with Barkeepers’ Friend should sort that out. You can do a new bathroom for a lot less than Ā£9k though.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 22/07/2022 18:40

Equal parts washing up liquid and white vinegar
