Previous owners left bath in a terrible state 😢

I’m absolutely desperate for a good bath after cleaning this filthy house that they left behind.

Unfortunately they left the bath almost as unclean as they left the toilet. 😧

Not sure how well the photo shows but it’s deep scratches with engrained dirt, all the way down. I think possibly they washed their dog in the bath.

A new bathroom is going to have to be on the agenda. (We’ve had four quotes in, all Ā£9.5-9.9k! 😦)

Until we find a magic money tree with £10k on it, is there any way at all to do something about the state of this bath?

I was going to say Oxy type powder and v hot water. I use that for stained cups, tea pot etc. Then I'd go over with an abrasive cleaner if needed like pink stuff or cif. Then bleach or bleach spray if needed.

Good luck!

Our bath is scratched from DS2 soaking/scrubbing picture frames to get stickers off (well, not the frames, the glass).
The scratches aren’t black, but your bum feels them when you’re sitting šŸ™„
(It was nearly new when he did it, too. If he’d only put some towels in first…)
Anyway, even if you can get rid of the black marks, I’d get a nice soft padded rubber bath mat to sit on until you can replace! šŸ™‚

Everyone saying bar keepers friend, I just looked it up on Amazon, which one is it?

If it's just the bath, why can't you replace just the bath? That will be much cheaper.

This. Buy a bath, hire any plumber to fit it. Easy. Did it a couple of years ago I think the bath was £150 and the plumber £100ish.

Berthatydfil · 22/07/2022 19:58

You need the enzymes in the biological washing powder to dissolve the stains. You can try dishwasher tabs as they contain enzymes too nut they are very abrasive so dissolve in the water but don’t scrub .

Having seen that toilet, if you have an electric shower please get it checked!

When we ripped out our bathroom there was live electric cables behind the metal bit your turn the shower on and off. They’d swapped out and electric shower for a normal manual one and just left the cables in. Not sure how none of us got electrocuted tbh. Been a bit twitchy about other peoples bodge jobs since.

I have finally learned to only use neat white vinegar* rubbed in vigorously with a shower puff, followed by a rinse and a polish dry in the bathroom - bath, sink, taps (employing an old toothbrush) and loo bowl. The water is hard so I’m up against limescale as well as the need to clean.
I guarantee everything will gleam and come up like new. When you’ve thoroughly cleaned (might take a number of attempts for you) you could contact a company which does spot repairs. They can sand down and recoat any remaining small areas. I hope this helps and delays your need to replace items.

*5 ltr containers c/o A……n. Cheap as chips.

Here is their idea of a toilet installation!

Interesting! Easily boxed in, maybe put shelves above for extra storage as you say it’s small. We did this then tiled floor to ceiling. Buying the bath, loo and sink separately and getting a decent plumber to install is no way going to Ā£8K. We bought a non scratch non slip bath, about Ā£400, a sink that already had a cupboard attached-Ā£350 and thought that was expensive, but it’s very neat, doesn’t stick out. Ā£200 to replaster the ceiling, it’s a small room!

ehb102 · 22/07/2022 20:22

Definitely biological washing powder. Kim and Aggie showed how the skin deposits would run off the enamel afterwardsshudder.

Whiskeypowers · 22/07/2022 20:24

After trying these cleaning tips get a good quality full length bath mat too. It will help you feel less contaminated !

dworky · 22/07/2022 20:33

A new bath isn't costly. No need for a whole new bathroom.

Nat6999 · 22/07/2022 20:46

T-Cut car polish will soften the scratches, clean it first & then use the polish

Megapint · 22/07/2022 20:53

Nothing to add except post us an after pic. Now if anyone needs me I'll be In bed with a beer watching tiktok videos of folk cleaning stuff. Happy days😁

Wotaloadofshit · 22/07/2022 20:57

Can you give it a really good clean and then re-coat the enamel? I'm sure they do enamel paints for baths

TreacheryPepper · 22/07/2022 20:59

I know I'm missing the point of the thread here, bathing a dog in the bath is normal isn't it?

thetombliboo · 22/07/2022 21:00

You can get the bath sprayed with an acrylic paint (I think it's acrylic) a coating anyway.

Calmdown14 · 22/07/2022 21:05

If it's enamel, a magic sponge works a treat.
I tried near neat bleach on one we inherited and it did nothing. Tried magic sponge on mother in law's recommendation. At first I thought I'd taken the surface off the bath but no, that was the colour it was actually meant to be. Came up a treat

Here is their idea of a toilet installation!

Hahahhahahahahahahahhahahahahahahah!!!!!!!!

We once viewed a house here the staircase wasn't attached to the wall! It was a bit wobbly going up (and I was shitting myself having to go back down). But that toilet, just casually wafting around in mid air with not a care in the world, takes the biscuit.

MrsSkylerWhite · 22/07/2022 21:17

Where do you live that a bath costs £10,000?

serious note: was it like that when you viewed? Do you have the brochure? If it wasn’t, I think it would be reasonable to seek redress.

GirlOfTudor · 22/07/2022 21:19

Just here to agree that £9,000 for a new bathroom is extortionate. I think they saw you and saw pound signs!
Perhaps don't look for quotes for a new bathroom specifically, but look for quotes from a plumber to fit a bath, sink, etc and replumb the pipes. Order the items yourself and you'll save thousands.

Alarchbach · 22/07/2022 21:24

Ā£9000.. that’s insane..

I had mine done Christmas time and it cost me less than £4k, that included floor and wall tiles, a whole new suite with L shaped bath, waterfall shower, skimmed ceiling with spotlights, plumber and tiler and a new bathroom window.
We could have done it even cheaper if we wanted to.

RudsyFarmer · 22/07/2022 21:26

I’d go at it with a magic sponge.

Iloveartichokes · 22/07/2022 21:40

Magic sponges should not be used on shiny surfaces.

Mosaic123 · 22/07/2022 21:45

Clean it well and then add one of those bathmats with the suckers that stick to the bath. The biggest one you can find.
