Previous owners left bath in a terrible state 😢

I’m absolutely desperate for a good bath after cleaning this filthy house that they left behind.

Unfortunately they left the bath almost as unclean as they left the toilet. 😧

Not sure how well the photo shows but it’s deep scratches with engrained dirt, all the way down. I think possibly they washed their dog in the bath.

A new bathroom is going to have to be on the agenda. (We’ve had four quotes in, all Ā£9.5-9.9k! 😦)

Until we find a magic money tree with £10k on it, is there any way at all to do something about the state of this bath?

Thanks Blossomtoes !

Buy lots of boxes of Astonish cup cleaner, dry the bath well, tip the cup cleaner in and QUARTER fill the bath with water as hot as you can get it. It will foam but the foam subsides as the water cools down.
Perfectly clean bath without any heavy scrubbing.

DH used the bath to clean his mountain bike after a truly revoltingly filthy muddy ride. Wtf he though putting his bike in the tub was a good idea I don't know but the bath was in an unbelievable state. I've now brought him a pressure washer and banned the bike from the house.

yellowbutterflies · 22/07/2022 22:03

Don't know if anyone said it but nail polish remover is handy. My dc used to mark the bath with their toys all the time when they were little and this was the only thing that got the marks off.

InNeedofaBath · 23/07/2022 00:24

Just here to agree that £9,000 for a new bathroom is extortionate. I think they saw you and saw pound signs!

All four of them saw pound signs? Large chains and independents? It’s a strange coincidence, for sure.

Cream cleanser like Jif.

MayISuggestSomeThickCutSteakChipsToGoWithThat · 23/07/2022 01:18

I've just had a new bathroom fitted. New bath and shower, new toilet, new sink and vanity unit, a towel radiator and the walls tiled all the way through £4000 For mine doing

Orangesare · 23/07/2022 04:32

I’ve just had to clean a similarly mucky bath in a new house
flash bathroom with fe breeze first then a good rinse. Then I used cif cream cleaner on the scratches. I’ve still got some limescale left that I’m going to attack with viakyl

loislovesstewie · 23/07/2022 05:39

I've just had a new bathroom suite installed for £1400, he gave a provisional figure of £1500 but when he had finished lowered it to 1400. The tiler did some additional tiling ( it was tiled OK, just needed more ) and that cost £600. The shower wasn't renewed, as that was new.

BlodynGwyn · 23/07/2022 05:40

I use a water pik or water flosser turned up high to clean out crevices.

Theoldwoman · 23/07/2022 05:45

Have a shower!

if you are filthy, having a bath is just you sitting in your own filth.

loislovesstewie · 23/07/2022 06:43

Meant to say I bought the tiles in B&Q for the princely sum of £1 per pack, it's possible to find bargains if you look.

RandomMess · 23/07/2022 09:25

What would you be having done for £8k - a full remodel?

If you are just replacing like for like it's ridiculous.

WinterMusings · 23/07/2022 09:42

YesItsMeIDontCare · 22/07/2022 18:46

£10K???? 😱

Fuck - I've just spent £1.5K on mine. That's not everything, but even so - £10K is absolutely taking the piss!

Can you post a photo?

I had my small bathroom done (pre covid)

it was about £8000.

I LOVE it, so no regrets, but I might have to do another one soon and I'd love to know what I could get for £3k.

thanks.

It’s not a coincidence, it’s because you haven’t looked at the most cost effective way of doing it, ie buying the fixtures and finding a local plumber to fit them. If you go for the most expensive way of doing a job it’s inevitably going to cost more. At least think about why so many of us are telling you Ā£9k is extortionate. The specialist bathroom companies are renowned for their ridiculous prices.

OnaBegonia · 22/07/2022 18:30

A bathroom doesn't need to be £9/10k, you can buy a full suite for less than £1k, tiles, shower & fittings £1k, tradesmen £1k, total £3k

We had a bathroom replaced some years back for about £1800

What are you doing to it that needs nearly £10,000

www.victorianplumbing.co.uk/keswick-grey-bathroom-suite? £799

Well, mine was gutted (largely by me)

new sink, bath, toilet (shower over bath) all put in the same places as old, floor & 3/4 tiled (with tiles I love- not basic cheap white ones, but not incredibly expensive either). Aqua Lisa shower (with ball fill & 1 additional outside the bath/shower control. (I think that was all about £1400), 800x bath. Large (mains gas with on radiator circuit) towel rail.

ceiling replaced & skylight put in (total about 1k of the £8k)

unless you want basic cheap white tiles, shell/scalloped sink, bath & loo and the most basic shower I don't see how you can do it for less than maybe £6/7,000.

Our bath is scratched from DS2 soaking/scrubbing picture frames to get stickers off (well, not the frames, the glass).
The scratches aren’t black, but your bum feels them when you’re sitting šŸ™„
(It was nearly new when he did it, too. If he’d only put some towels in first…)
Anyway, even if you can get rid of the black marks, I’d get a nice soft padded rubber bath mat to sit on until you can replace! šŸ™‚

@GiantKitten

How old was he?

ole enough to be washing glass off his own back, I'd have gone mad! Then felt guilty about it! We all do stupid things sometimes.

@InNeedofaBath if MN don't fix the 'No capitals', after being here since practically when it started, it might be the final nail in the coffin

WinterMusings · 23/07/2022 10:15

Whiskeypowers · 22/07/2022 20:24

After trying these cleaning tips get a good quality full length bath mat too. It will help you feel less contaminated !

18 months ago I would have scoffed at your suggestion, but last year I had an accident (not bath related) and I had to be extremely careful not to slip, so I reluctantly bought a bath mat. It's 'Aqua'. It looks fine and makes the bathroom look like it has a lovely pool in it I only take it up once a week to wash the back of it and it looks fine. I have put it in the machine with the (outside the bath) bath mat & it comes up lovely. At first I thought I'd be desperate to remove it, but the bath looks naked without it now šŸ˜‚

id definitely put one in a bath in a new house, even after scrubbing the bath, just to make it feel even more clean/more mine.

they're nothing like the old beige 1970's jobbies!!

WinterMusings · 23/07/2022 10:20

dworky · 22/07/2022 20:33

A new bath isn't costly. No need for a whole new bathroom.

Did you read the OP's other posts? Did you not see the photo of the toilet??

she lives there, I think she knows whether they need a new bathroom or not!

I agree though, IF they know the layout they eventually want and buy a bath now the correct size for that, they could just swap the bath out now, but having seen that toilet, I'd be prioritising any money on getting an electrician to check the wiring and prioritising anything arising from that, then making a list of what else needs doing - I doubt the bath is the most important! Bloody goid soak with non bio, wash with bleach & scrub/polish with bar keepers friend & an aqua bath mat, £30 (ish) will do the job for now!

WinterMusings · 23/07/2022 10:23

TreacheryPepper · 22/07/2022 20:59

I know I'm missing the point of the thread here, bathing a dog in the bath is normal isn't it?

For some people, yes, I used to & would again, BUT anyone with an ounce of sense puts in a non slip mat, or the very least some towels!

plus baths are almost all acrylic now & scratch much more easily than old baths!

incywincywanker · 23/07/2022 10:24

This happened to us once, we got someone in to do a coat over the bath an it looked like new and cost us 100! Just like a layer they paint over was brilliant, we never needed a new bath once it was done just decorated x

Perhaps don't look for quotes for a new bathroom specifically, but look for quotes from a plumber to fit a bath, sink, etc and replumb the pipes. Order the items yourself and you'll save thousands.

Nope. I ordered the things I wanted, bathroom fitter just fit them, separate guy installed the sky light etc.

id love to see any completely new bathrooms where someone's partner/parent/friend didn't install it for them, all done for under £8k

photos anyone??

plus if you haven't done it I can understand you being shocked at the price, I was befire I did it (pre covid prices too). I'd expect mine to be at least £2k more now.

VerifiedBot2351 · 23/07/2022 10:30

Is the bath looking any better today?

WinterMusings · 23/07/2022 10:31

Alarchbach · 22/07/2022 21:24

Ā£9000.. that’s insane..

I had mine done Christmas time and it cost me less than £4k, that included floor and wall tiles, a whole new suite with L shaped bath, waterfall shower, skimmed ceiling with spotlights, plumber and tiler and a new bathroom window.
We could have done it even cheaper if we wanted to.

Any chance of a photo?

yours sounds nice. I might have to do another soon and I'd be keen to see examples of what I could get for half the price of my current one!

oh you meanie, mine far prefers a nice warm soak in the tub...

WTAF was he thinking?? (Clearly he wasn't!) Did he scratch the bath, or was it just a muddy mess (I hope you made HIM clean it!!)
