'food is life' or 'food is fuel'?

fluffydoglover27 · 22/07/2022 16:17

so I was chatting to a friend and she says she is in the 'food is life' category, whereas personally I'm very unfused about food and would say I'm in the 'food is fuel' category

was wondering where others stand?

Somewhere in the middle. "Food is life" is not a good philosophy in your fifties.

PeggyGa · 22/07/2022 16:19

I was food is life and in a real mess with binge eating and was hugely overweight.

had a gastric sleeve and literally have no interest in food and I am really glad about it

Chickpea17 · 22/07/2022 16:21

Food is my life but I can honestly say I wish it wasn't nothing good has come from it.

cherrypiepie · 22/07/2022 16:22

Food is life. Unfortunately I'm 4 stone over weight so it does it does not bode well. But yes I bloody love food. Cooking/ eating /talking /shopping for/ watching tv about food.

DogsAndGin · 22/07/2022 16:23

Food is life, but not in a binge eating way. In a where was it grown, how will I cook it, what will it taste like? - kind of a way. I prefer quality over quantity, and absolutely love meal times with DH and family. In fact, we’re having a dinner party tonight and it’s been a pleasure sourcing all the ingredients and recipes. Can’t wait to cook it all with DH and have a lovely time eating it all! I think food is one of the greatest pleasures in life.

Food is definitely just fuel for me.
I enjoy nice food but if I could be nourished in a way that took up less time and effort I'd choose that!

Mumortwo · 22/07/2022 16:25

I've just posted about a young man I know who doesn't like food and only eats it to survive. He usually just makes himself eat one meal a day.
Personally I like food too much.
I think that you can take love of food too far. We quite often have visitors from Italy, and they are absolutely obsessed with Italian food. They search neighbouring towns for a decent Italian restaurant. One teenager tried the local pizza place. He found out that they offer pizza with ham and pineapple and walked out. He said that when he saw that he wanted to kill everyone in the restaurant. Hopefully that was an exaggeration.

HelenHywater · 22/07/2022 16:27

It's fuel. Although I like the whole occasion of going out to dinner but that's more the setting and getting out than the actual food. cba at home at all.

JanisMoplin · 22/07/2022 16:28

I am Asian so the "food is life" philosophy is part of my culture, but mostly it means women spend their entire lives in the kitchen chopping, grinding, frying, mixing....and it always has to be fresh. Also, a high incidence of diabetes.

So I have very mixed feelings about it, and have modified that in my own family. I think we are at " Food is great, but sometimes living and health comes first".

oldwhyno · 22/07/2022 16:29

Food is life. I wish I had more time to grow/source/enjoy good food. Food is also love. I wish I had more opportunity to cook more for friends and family.

When time is short though, food is sometimes just fuel.

prettylittlethingss · 22/07/2022 16:31

Food is life. But making tasty food healthily.
I'm currently eating a big bowl of pasta made while whole meal pasta, loads of spinach, courgette, green bell pepper, fresh basil and vegetarian sausages.

NiqueNique · 22/07/2022 16:33

I’m definitely in the Food is Life camp. I find a lot of joy in wonderful food and drink, creating tasty dishes, enjoying them, and seeing the happiness that others find in the food I’ve made for them. It’s one of the greatest pleasures in life and I think there’s great value in breaking bread with loved ones, family and friends.

PurpleDaisies · 22/07/2022 16:34

I don’t think it has to be either/or. I love cooking and eating but I also recognise that the main purpose of food is to be good for my body. I guess maybe personally, healthy food is life.

stayathomer · 22/07/2022 16:35

Just fuel for me: a great disappointment to practically everyone I know who spend their time on WhatsApp showing pictures of what they’ve grown, bought, cooked or baked. I am definitely the odd one out between both family and friends and Christmas in particular is a disaster for me!!!!

DownNative · 22/07/2022 16:36

Food is fuel and fuel is life - the two are interlinked and cannot be separated. A love of food with a view to giving yourself enough fuel is itself life.

So, basically I have the mindset of all things in moderation is good for you.

Inextremis · 22/07/2022 16:36

Food is life - I love cooking, so long as it's interesting cooking (not so keen on heating up a can of beans). I like cooking curries, and Mexican dishes, Thai and Chinese food too - and of course French and English recipes. I like cooking the food more than I enjoy eating it - and I enjoy that a lot, though not to excess. I love looking for new recipes and ingredients online, also talking about food, and am one of 'those' people who feel the need to take photos of their dinner most evenings (I don't always share them though!).

ihavenocats · 22/07/2022 16:42

To me food is both pleasurable and also, and mainly, it's what we run off, it's our engine fuel and it can help or harm us in equal measure. I eat for health and make healthy food tasty. That's my approach to food so that it's enjoyable and healthful at the same time. That way I don't crave foods that will harm me as much.

SnoopLabbyLab · 22/07/2022 16:42

My dad once said to me ‘I’ve always had the feeling that life is just something you do to pass the time between meals.’

He wasn’t wrong. I’m slim and healthy, but absolutely adore cooking, eating and reading ( sometimes even writing) about food. We eat good, fresh, healthy food and know where it comes from. That’s part of enjoying food, I can’t stand cheap, processed crap. It’s Thai prawn curry tonight and I started thinking about the best tablecloth to go with the curry bowls shortly after breakfast. DD13 said today she had started thinking about the food we will eat in France next week and I was like ‘honey, I started thinking about that the moment our car rolled into Dover in February’. Can’t bloody wait.

Thingsdogetbetter · 22/07/2022 16:44

Food was fuel until I moved in with my husband, who is an exceptional cook, 10 years. Now my rather larger size seems to suggest food is life. It's a slightly poisoned chalice. 😁

bathorshower · 22/07/2022 16:44

Somewhere in between - I enjoy food, and like to enjoy food (a little too much as my waistline will tell you). But I don't need every meal to be incredible - I'm happy to have cereal for dinner sometimes, or a ready meal. But I definitely prefer life with chocolate.

Savedbythebell25 · 22/07/2022 16:47

Food is life. I'm currently in my first trimester with awful nausea so I've not been able to enjoy food for two months now. I'm literally just eating what I can stomach to survive. I can't tell you how miserable it is making me! I can't wait to have a proper breakfast again, bake a cake or go out for a meal. Most of my activities revolve around food!

PleaseYourselfandEatTheCrusts · 05/08/2022 18:30

Food is life. I wish I could take or leave food a bit more to be honest.

gradychang · 29/09/2024 16:18

Food is fuel but it's nice for it to be healthy and social as it's something everyone has to do.
