We are completely gridlocked in four / five hour delays due to border control issues. Kids are climbing the walls already Confused

The Brexit gift keeps on giving

CockadoodleDoosPooh · 22/07/2022 14:15

Oh no @Hembria , have you got enough drinks etc? locals have been turned round on the smaller roads too, nothing is moving

If everyone didn't have to get passports stamped then that would have saved time. Blame Brexit!

How ridiculous! Brexit is about leaving the orbit of EU lawmaking and increasing federalisation. A side effect is having ot get your passport stamped but the people who want to stay in for easy holidays are fools who don't know what they are voting for.

This has been caused by short staffing by French border force and needing to stamp passports. All things that could have been foreseen and overcome if there was the will.

Hembria · 22/07/2022 14:38

@CockadoodleDoosPooh thankfully we heard the news on the way so stopped at a service station and stocked up.

I feel so sorry for people living here though. The idea of needing to get to a healthcare appointment or pick the kids up from nursery, or even get home from a job. What a nightmare!

Are you going to be ok getting home?

CockadoodleDoosPooh · 22/07/2022 14:45

That’s good @Hembria , I haven’t been able to get out today , the roads are gridlocked , there’s a local food festival on too to add to the mix
they are usually very busy but this is ridiculous, bus services have been cancelled too , nobody can get to work in Dover
just hope my children can get home ok
feel sorry for the emergency services , what a bloody mess
have you managed to reach the roundabout yet ?

Tiredmum100 · 22/07/2022 14:55

I feel your pain OP. This happend to is in the summer hols in 2019. We were delayed for hours. We missed out ferry which then ended up eating to our short break at euro Disney. We were given vouchers to use on the ferry as compensation. Hope things start moving for you soon!

Arsewangry · 22/07/2022 15:13

yaaaaay @Arsewangry

RockandRollsuicide · 22/07/2022 15:33

Well done op!!

What a pain! When did going away become so incredibly stressful?

As an aside it seems crazy that all this traffic cuts off the locals as well? I suppose special roads have been discussed for it?

Hembria · 22/07/2022 15:33

We are now in Dover!! We still have to make it from the travelodge to the port but there is hope.

Glad you made it @Arsewangry

RockandRollsuicide · 22/07/2022 15:33

Does it look like it's easing?

ImShrunk · 22/07/2022 15:35

It’s a very small price to pay for pint stamps on glasses and 16th of inches

honkeytonkwoman38 · 22/07/2022 09:36

Dover port have called critical incident. Basically the French didn't turn up to man the passport booths!

How come the French are so keen on passport checks at the UK side of the channel, but don't seem interested on checking the immigration status of people leaving the French ports towards us??

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 22/07/2022 15:41

Enjoy your holiday and hope things move on quickly. Blame Brexit.

Accountsdept · 22/07/2022 16:17

CockadoodleDoosPooh · 22/07/2022 13:25

Fellow Hytheian

CockadoodleDoosPooh · 22/07/2022 16:41

We went to France 4 weeks ago via Poole. Passport/ticket checking/stamping took no longer than pre Brexit. Arrived at Poole docks at 7.00 was in the line up waiting to board at 7.10. On arrival in Cherbourg were off the ship and on the road 45 minutes after tying up and we were by no means the first off.

Roundlampshade · 23/07/2022 09:44

How long was the crossing at Poole/Cherbourg @DoraSpenlow ? Maybe that’s the way forward, stop passenger traffic at Dover, leave that as a trade port and redistribute passenger tread fix along the south coast for France and from Harwich to Belgium/Holland etc?

bumblefeline · 23/07/2022 09:50

It looks worse today than yesterday.

I’ve been looking on twitter and people have been stuck in traffic outside the Eurotunnel for 7 hours!

itsgettingweird · 23/07/2022 13:07

Glad you got through .

It's awful for the tourists travelling but I also feel sorry for any residents who take an age just to go somewhere like a supermarket

The French are controlling their own border/EU border and are concerned with who enters the EU.
Why would they care about who leaves?

Well I hope there are some bathroom facilities nearby. That's the thing that would scare me about getting caught in long motorway tailback.

At least if you fly or train you have access to a loo, water and food etc.

UmbaRumba · 23/07/2022 15:29

No bathroom facilities once you are past stop 24 @ouch321 which is about 20 minutes to Dover on a good day so possibly up to 6 hours now
motorway closed to non freight traffic so all local towns and villages are gridlocked and traffic being turned around
busses are cancelled , people can’t get to work
it took 4 hours to do a 15 minute journey yesterday
don’t travel unless its unavoidable would be my advice
