I think he's more likely to be right than not. And I'm glad he's raising awareness of this issue.
I think he could go further, too. The benefit cap needs to be raised so that those on the lowest incomes see an increase: all the time it stays the same, the poorest families won't see any rise in their income in high-rent areas, because the cap is so low.
The local housing allowance rates have been the same for 3 years, but rents have risen, forcing people to spend of the money they're meant to have to live on goes on paying the shortfall. They need to raise carer's allowance and the carer's element of UC so that those caring for others don't lose out disproportionately.
The state pension is a paltry £185 pw, and pensioners have to spend more on heating because they're likely to spend more time at home. The increased winter fuel allowance isn't going to touch the sides of increased energy costs.
I work in welfare rights, and every working day I see people who are really struggling financially. It's heartbreaking.
