Are you concerned about the heat

Won't lie i think too much news and media coverage of it has got to me im actually quite concerned now about the heat , we're in a red zone with it likely to be 39.c mon+tues , I only have the school runs to do but im not even looking forward to that.

Oh, I'm retired if anyone thinks I'm a lazy arse for not having to go to work

EV117 · 17/07/2022 08:59

I’m not concerned as such - I would have preferred if it was today though, I think that would have been a lot easier for many people. Its very different having a day in the heat when you’re on your own time at home on a Sunday than trying to get through a 36 degree day while dealing with work and school. I’m still wondering whether it would be best to pick DS up from school early or whether that would be silly - some schools around here have given parents that option but ours has not.

TimBoothseyes · 17/07/2022 09:00

No. I'll take the usual precautions, but other than that there's nothing I can do to change things so why stress about something I have no control over.

concernedguineapig · 17/07/2022 09:01

I'm spending 13 hours on a maternity ward in ppe on Tuesday so I'm extremely worried I'm going to quite literally melt into a puddle and die.

Yes. I'm concerned about climate change and that this will become a new normal for the uk which will be disastrous for our flora and fauna, who have adapted to much cooler temperatures.

I am also concerned because we do not have the infrastructure in this country to manage very high temperatures. Very few homes have air conditioning, and many public buildings also lack it. This means that people aren't able to have a respite from the heat which puts stress on their bodies.

Same.

I'm not worried for myself personally (I can wfh, and my flat doesn't get unbearably hot). I'm vaguely concerned one/both of my children's schools may close, impacting my ability to get my work done, and I'm v sympathetic to the schools and staff as they try to keep going through it.

I'm concerned for those working/unwell in old hospitals which are difficult to keep cool, and I'm concerned about our already thinly-spread emergency services having to cope with the surge in demand for them, a great deal of which is likely to be avoidable.

People are quick to say 'other countries cope with this' but that's not entirely true, look at the photos of Mediterranean wildfires this weekend for example, on top of which Brits have always (on average) had sillier hot weather behaviour.

Mommabear20 · 17/07/2022 09:07

Absolutely not! I'm 5 months pregnant and have 2 toddlers! They manage in other countries where the heat lasts longer than 2 days (and is hotter too!). Why is everything such a drama in England?

Oblomov22 · 17/07/2022 09:10

No.

No. Lived in Spain and had this weather all the time. Kids still went to school. Yet again mass hysteria in the U.K. media frenzy

The buildings in Spain are built with hot weather in mind. The culture is set up to work around the heat. In the U.K. our buildings are insulated for cold. There are not even ceiling fans. Plenty of windows in workplaces only open a crack.

BrambleRoses · 17/07/2022 09:12

Honestly, yes, a bit.

I have a very fair skinned DS. I’m sure nursery will keep him inside but then that’s also going to be uncomfortably hot for them all Sad

Oblomov22 · 17/07/2022 09:12

Actually, yes. Pissed off at the hysteria. Wondering how on earth they are going to address the core issues, eg like school classrooms being too hot, no aircon, for when this happens again and again, as it will.

Lacedwithgrace · 17/07/2022 09:13

Yes. I have a couple of conditions that get worse in the heat, specifically from inflammation. 25°+ is usually enough to have me in agony. I'm near Norwich so looking at the higher end of temps

KarmaComma · 17/07/2022 09:17

I probably wouldn't be bothered either if I could lie down in the shade/darkened room all day sipping water with a fan in me.

However, I've got to work all day, trying to keep 30 little children cool and occupied in a room with no air con in 40°. Not looking forward to it.

Savingpeoplehuntingthings · 17/07/2022 09:25

No, not worried, although not looking forward to work. I work in a preschool, 4 year olds need a lot of nagging encouraging to keep drinking water, they don't self regulate, will be grumpy and we'll need to keep them I side more than normal which makes them wired.

It's only for a couple of days though so hey ho.

Tiredmum100 · 17/07/2022 09:25

I wouldn't be worried if I wasn't going to work (district nurse). We could keep cool at home easily enough. I am not looking forward to wearing scrubs (the same ones we wear all year round, no difference for heat/cold), and bandaging peoples legs tomorrow. My plan is to go to certain patients before it gets too hot, however that doesn't always go to plan. The heating pipes were actually hot last week in the office, just to add to the temp.

takeitandleaveit · 17/07/2022 09:37

I am a bit concerned about an elderly relative, yes. She's 97, forgetful, and rarely drinks enough. Also thinking about trying to keep my cats cool. Three of them have thick fur, and one is particularly fluffy.

As for the garden - well. We have a west-facing suntrap, and the microclimate out there is hot. Very hot - I once fried an egg out there!. And my insufferable neighbour threatened me with legal action unless I cut down the only shade we had, so three weeks ago we lost our small tree.

YorkieTheRabbit · 17/07/2022 09:39

I’ve lived in Spain, not many apartments or houses where I was living had air conditioning. They are built differently to the UK, plus all floors were tiled so cooler.

Holidays are different, hotel rooms and apartments generally have air conditioning, being able to go in the sea or pool to cool down, helps enormously.

I’m not worried for us, we will keep the windows and curtains closed when the sun is on them, have fans if we need them. Plenty of shade in the garden. We have two dogs, one is 14, so our main concern is making sure they are both ok.

Wellthatsjustswell · 17/07/2022 09:41

I’ll be working all day in mask and apron so I am concerned how hot and exhausted I will get.

Decidualcast · 17/07/2022 09:43

Not worried for myself. I love heat, and was in a country recently where it was hotter and we were hiking 10miles. I’m worried for my son as he wheeze has increased over the past few days. I have to say 111 were fabulous on quickly sorting out an emergency prescription for inhalers.

BrambleRoses · 17/07/2022 09:44

It’s going to be eight degrees hotter here than it is in Benidorm at the moment. So I’m not sure looking to Spain is a particularly good example!

ofwarren · 17/07/2022 09:46

Not at all
Not looking forward to the school run because we have to walk a mile and a half but we will probably just get taxis those days cos I don't drive.
I've been in hotter weather on holiday.

Chakraleaf · 17/07/2022 09:46

Yes. Really worried :(

FelicityFidget · 17/07/2022 09:51

The hysteria is unreal. Half the planet have these temperatures regularly.

AppleHa · 17/07/2022 09:51

Not personally.
There seems to be a real difference between forecast as well. For our area (Essex) the Met Office is predicting 34 Monday and 31 Tuesday, which is a nice holiday temperature in my book. The BBC however is predicting 37 and 38. Im more inclined to believe the Met Office, have always found them more accurate.

GrandRapids · 17/07/2022 09:52

No not really. We went to Florida a a few yrs ago when it was 40+ most days. We still managed to walk around all the Disney Parks without collapsing!

NorthernChinchilla · 17/07/2022 09:53

Yes, worried for my son. I've seen him get ill with heat exhaustion/stroke before, in weather far less hot. Even without that, he does not cope with the heat. Wish school had given the option to keep them home.
