Naked cycle ride in my town today

We have a naked cycle ride through our local town this afternoon.
Apparently, it’s a protest against car usage.
This has been a thing for several years now (with a hiatus over the last two years).
About 4 years back my, (at the time), 10 year old dd pointed these people out to me when we were walking near the town one day. We stood there whilst a load of (mainly) middles aged and older men cycled past completely naked.
I have no issue with body image and my kids have grown up not to be ashamed of their bodies/nakedness etc but I don’t think it’s on for naked strangers to be cycling past young children with everything on show.
I am all for protesting and especially global warming/climate control issues but wouldn’t it be better to be done in a more fun/carnival-type way where they can involve all ages and the protesters could stop and talk to people and express their concerns, hand over leaflets with tips and advice to reduce car use etc? This seems a bit pointless, I mean, who would want to stop and chat to naked 60 year old Bob about his concerns over global warming while his cock and balls are sat there flopped over the bike seat, no thanks!
I don’t know if this is a country-wide protest but it’s coming to another nearby town in a few weeks.
Has anyone else seen this in their town? Do you have any thoughts about it?

Grim. Just put some bloody clothes on and discuss climate change like grown ups.

How about no? It gets people like you talking. If they were to 'talk like grown ups' I bet you'd just whine about them having kids or breathing which releases CO2

LocalHobo · 16/07/2022 12:56

I think nudity was more of a thing in the 60's and 70's, the summer of love, Isle of Wight festival and Glastonbury all had lots more naked attendees then, and those people will be aged 60+ now.
The naked aspect will certainly attract attention, as it has here.
i don't have a problem with it, and agree with those saying there is nothing sexualised about it.

God, how rude. Firstly, you'd be wrong, I'd be more than happy to have a conversation about climate change with people who are dressed and secondly, which of those people who do not want to engage with climate change have been convinced otherwise by a flash of exhibitionists riding by on bikes?

FourTeaFallOut · 16/07/2022 12:57

It attracts attention but who's talking about climate change, it's barely mustered a passing nod on this thread?

panteloni · 16/07/2022 12:58

@FourTeaFallOut no, I don't believe you'd be willing to talk about it. If you we're bothered, you'd already be doing that. If you want the naked bike rides to stop, you can
start watch your emissions, then there won't be any needWink

FourTeaFallOut · 16/07/2022 12:59

What makes you think I'm not? Do I have to do it all naked for it to count?

But the downfall of this type of protest is that we are not talking about climate change are we? People end up discussing their nakedness so the whole stupid thing is futile.

The only thing I'm less interested in seeing than a bunch of MAMILs is a bunch of MAMs with out the IL

The title of your thread is the nudity so it's hardly surprising that's what we're debating. The nakedness is definitely more prominent but if it's between zero attention and some attention on climate... it's technically done it's job.

But it won't have done its job because zero people are discussing climate control where this protest is concerned. It's on our local FB group and again, not one person has discussed their plight, so what is the bloody point?

YANBU except for the blatant ageism. Are you saying you'd be happy to look at 'Bob's' cock and balls flopping about if he was younger than 60?

If not then his age is irrelevant, as is the fact they're mostly middle aged.

That was my first thought too - really awful ageist body shaming.

It's just bodies OP - we've all got them genitals included. There's nothing disgusting, shameful or threatening... they're just kinda there 😁

Your dd will take her cue from you, so try to reel the ageism in at least.

xsquared · 16/07/2022 13:10

In the words of Ross Geller, why does anyone have to be naked?

Never knew this was even a thing. It's very telling that the majority of participants are men and not women. I don't think it will have anything to do with women caring less about the environment.

SiobhanSharpe · 16/07/2022 13:11

JustlookingNotbuying · 16/07/2022 11:24

AintNoPartyLikeANumber10Party and the fact that the majority are men I can not but think it’s just a way for them to legally show off their naked bodies to all and sundry.

Yes, where are the naked women? Around here, a bike friendly university city, there are about as many female cyclists as men. Are they (we) more sensible?
Or, just a thought, is something else at play here?

BigFatLiar · 16/07/2022 13:11

Don't look Ethel - too late she'd got a free shot

Apologies to those not old enough to remember the streak.

Most protests are out to cause inconvenience. We may not be discussing climate change directly but is being brought to your attention simply through the nuisance they're causing.

Staggersaurus · 16/07/2022 13:13

Hot bike seat + naked bum crack and sack = ouch! I once burned my fully clothed bum on a bike seat in Australia. The seat had absorbed an immense amount of heat and it bloody hurt!

SiobhanSharpe · 16/07/2022 13:13

No, that won't wash. A large protest by clothed cyclists would cause just as much inconvenience, if indeed that is what the aim is.

KatherineJaneway · 16/07/2022 13:16

If you don't want to see it then I'm sure it's not impossible to avoid the route for the few hours it's happening.

And how would I know it is happening? I don't go onto Facebook before I leave the house and see if someone might be naked in the street in support of the Save The Spotted Owl Society.

What I’m trying to say is how I don’t understand their protest, how riding a bicycle, naked is going to get people talking about climate changes and how it will get people to consider reducing their car mileage.

It doesn't. It is just an excuse to get their dicks out in public.

SherbertLemonDrop · 16/07/2022 13:17

There's one in London every year we bumped into them last my teen sons eyes nearly popped out his head he thought it was amazing. I was mortified 🤣🤣🤣

SherbertLemonDrop · 16/07/2022 13:17

Last month I meant to say

DogInATent · 16/07/2022 13:19

Given the position adopted by most cyclists, you'd need to be having a good, hard, deliberate look to see anything when they go by. As long as it's only pearls and not opera glasses you're clutching OP then your sensitivities should be fine.

girlmom21 · 16/07/2022 13:19

@Lockheart I never suggested that attracting attention and causing alarm are the same thing. I'd certainly be alarmed by seeing a group of naked cyclists when I'm out with my children. It's not acceptable and they know exactly what they're doing.

gospelsinger · 16/07/2022 13:21

It also excludes the majority of women. I might like to join a cycling protest, but I wouldn't join that one.

loomband · 16/07/2022 13:22

I think people need to chill. First of all, your body shaming men who probably look the same as your husband. Also, this is non-sexual nudity. The Family Sex Show, if anyone remembers, was genuinely grotesque and vile. This is just bodies on bikes, How to people cope taking their kids to a art gallery or the beach?

GretaVanFleet · 16/07/2022 13:22

Well it sounds like you’ve done a great job not to be ashamed of nakedness because your DD doesn’t sound as though the previous experience traumatised her. I think my children at the same age would have thought it hysterical.
