Teenagers overdressing in the heat

Has anyone found any way to get a teenager to wear less on hot days? My 14-year-old DS is insisting on wearing his hoodie. He looks very hot, but keeps insisting he is not?

Or should I just ignore it, and take a photo of him to show future partners what he wore during a heatwave?

And is it only my son?

Well I wouldn't do that. DH's family delight in showing me 'embarrassing' pictures of him as a kid and a teen and honestly they just bore me to absolute tears.

Just ignore it. Unless he has additional care needs he's surely capable of taking it off if he's about to pass out?

watcherintherye · 13/07/2022 20:05

My 15 year old DS was refusing to wear any shorts on Saturday where I got burnt at a comedy festival at 4pm it was so hot!

Maybe he was the sensible one, covering up!
Being serious, though. I remember being that teen. So self-conscious that I didn’t realise that ironically I stood out much more, sticking to my ‘uniform’ of jeans, t-shirt, and long dark brown cardigan (it was the 70s!) throughout the summer, rather than be exposed in summer clothes. It’s difficult when you want to stay in your comfort zone!

UneFoisAuChalet · 13/07/2022 20:06

My year 9 insisted on wearing his blazer even though his school said they didn’t this week. His reasoning? He’s got everything in his blazer (keys, phone, pens, ruler, timetable, money) that he would rather sweat than ditch it. 🤷‍♀️

antelopevalley · 13/07/2022 20:06

It would be one photo. Christ you would think I was posting about cutting his hoodie off him.

Own clothes day today at school so naturally he wore black tracksuit bottoms and a hoodie. He's also 14. I looked at him and said "man's not hot then"? He was very unimpressed.

topcat2014 · 13/07/2022 20:09

As a (male) teen I never wore shorts because of hairy legs, t shirts because of armpits or took my top off because of chest hair. Hence all my holiday snaps from the era I am over dressed..

RadFad · 13/07/2022 20:10

My husband is still wearing a hoodie in this weather. It's not something I would do but he's more comfortable that way.

Namechange192727171 · 13/07/2022 20:11

He could be self conscious...

Sweating
Body hair
Self harm

Meadowbreeze · 13/07/2022 20:14

Mans not hot innit

onlythreenow · 13/07/2022 20:53

It is supposed to be light-hearted. I do remember being a teenager and will not give him a hard time. He just looks so HOT.

Sorry OP - MN is not really the place for "light-hearted". So many posters just don't understand the concept.

cantthinkofabetterusername · 13/07/2022 20:54

My 14 year old dd has insisted on wearing her coat ALL week

MuddlingThroughLifeLittleByLittle · 13/07/2022 20:59

My ds wears shorts 95%of the year. Inc those storms, snow etc. Sits in boxers in winter
Weekend 30 degreees, he packed a full fleece lined tracksuit to go stay with family. Insisted he wasn't hot. Because apparently there was 2 hrs of Cloud due! I said pack shorts he said nahhhh ill be alright! Don't go on.
He got back next day got in, went into garden stripped to his boxers and dived in pool. Apparently he was too hot to even go and put swimmers on.

IheartBTS · 13/07/2022 21:00

I was exactly the same at that age. I went through puberty earlier than my peers, and it took me a long time to accept my top-heavy body. I wore the baggiest tops that I possible could, and as many layers as possible. I just ignored the heat and the comments.

Plasmodesmata · 13/07/2022 21:01

Jeans, hoodie and DMs.
His father was exactly the same as a teenager.
Shorts? Not between the ages of 13 and 25.

NormalForNuneaton · 13/07/2022 21:01

We were in Spain last week and I saw a teenage boy (tourist, not Spanish) wearing jeans and a hoodie is temperatures around 32 degrees! His family were all in shorts and vest tops so it's not that they didn't realise that it would be that hot.

MarshaMelrose · 13/07/2022 21:01

Heavens above. The op is just having a bit of a light-hearted joke. Does it really deserve prophecies of doom of how he'll be traumatised for life? 🙄

MargaretThursday · 13/07/2022 21:05

Ds' school (standard state secondary) sent out an email beginning of the week asking people to make sure their teens weren't wearing coats to school. 😮

Ds doesn't have that issue: he's a shorts and t-shirt man all year round, and doesn't even own a coat after having one for 8 years that I bought reliably and he just as reliably never wore. He last wore a coat when he was in year 2.

If he does have a change of heart and needs a coat hurriedly he'll have to borrow dh's.

QueSyrahSyrah · 13/07/2022 21:06

I get the lightheartedness of the thread, I just think planning to take pictures of your kids to mock them with at a later date is a bit... not very funny.

Maybe he doesn't feel the heat OP. I still sleep under a thick duvet in this weather. Everyone else thinks I'm mad, but they're not me and I don't find it uncomfortable 🤷🏻‍♀️

KILM · 13/07/2022 21:06

Just to provide a perspective on the 'its a light hearted joke' discussion - absolutely, if your son is in on it and he'll laugh along with you while taking it then fair enough!
But if he doesnt, its not laughing with him its laughing at him so not worth potentially upsetting him over - there's plenty of other stuff to have a laugh with your kids about after all. He sounds exactly like me at that age, super self concious!

lurchermummy · 13/07/2022 21:07

My DD always wears hoodies to hide her self harm scarsSad

Hillrunning · 13/07/2022 21:07

I like the sound of your teen. I hate that so many people think that a bit of sun means you have to get loads of skin out. Often wearing less doesn't actually mean you are cooler. Most adults look ridiculous in the summer flapping about in shorts and strappy vests.

Fluffygreenslippers · 13/07/2022 21:27

Mans not hot.

Ginandslippers · 13/07/2022 21:31

I work with a just 18 year old, who has been wearing the same outfit since last September 😄 Come rain, shine, frost, ice or heatwave he wears shorts and a hoody.

Bunnyfuller · 13/07/2022 21:35

This thread is slightly reassuring…DD16 refusing to get out of long trousers and jacket despite me driving near naked (ok strappy sundress but I’m nearly 55!).

does this too pass?

DD was the same. Blazer has pockets. So. Somewhere for her phone and bus money/ticket. Skirt doesn't have pockets (girls trousers don't often either).
She also came downstairs in her oodie just now to go in the garden and clear the table, because apparently it's now too cold.
She had fluffy socks on too...
