Yes or no

Because a bikini top is to cover tits obviously. Babies and little girls don't have them.

I've asked other posters but they've declined to answer. Do you have girls. Do they attend swimming lessons and fun sessions at the local pool in trunks because swimming costumes intended for girls have the same job as a bikini?

BringMeTea · 12/07/2022 20:25

Absolutely not. Ridiculous.

CuriousCatfish · 12/07/2022 20:33

Yes. I like the one you linked to, OP.

I love the message we send girls that they need to cover up because some men may be tempted by them. There’s just been a thread about teenage girls who can’t wear the PE skirt / squort ( school uniform ) because some of the male teachers have an issue with it. What a world eh?

Unforgettablefire · 12/07/2022 20:45

@crosbystillsandmash I'm in my 50's and I assure you my "naïve attitude" actually comes from knowledge.

@Unforgettablefire
I'm sorry but you have literally displayed your lack of knowledge, in every part of your post.
It's full of the usual misinformation and I strongly suggest you step away from whatever papers you are reading, although I have never known even the shittiest of tabloids to contain nothing but the stories you suggest.

Quite.
I particularly despair when it's women 'policing' other women/girls!

daysfilledwithdappledlight · 12/07/2022 20:54

Personally no, but also because it just means more skin to have to suncream / protect for no reason!

Deadringer · 12/07/2022 20:55

I can't get worked up about it op, looks fine to me.

I'll answer, my boys and girls all wore the same, a nappy with a waterproof cover as babies, then those zip up suits until they were out of nappies, then shorts and rash vests until school swimming lessons at about 9 when the boys were required to wear trunks only and the girls a one piece, the girls were just about starting to develop breasts by that point.

AlwaysLatte · 12/07/2022 21:00

I don't think bikinis should even be made in child sizes, given the perves that will sadly always be at beaches. Rash vest and shorts are just as practical and better for the sun.

Redburnett · 12/07/2022 21:02

No, and frankly you should not have to ask.

liveforsummer · 12/07/2022 21:03

@MrsBwced rash vests in a public pool? My dc would be freezing with those on. The oils are cold and wet fabric clinging to skin makes that worse/ You must be aware that's not the norm and nearly every girl wears either a swimming costume or a 2 piece from toddler age up?

samebutdifferentt · 12/07/2022 21:04

In a swimming pool a costume seems better though not really sure why! Maybe more professional for a swim lesson?!

In the sun, bikini bottoms and a rash vest takes away the worry of burning. My girls wear long UV leggings and long sleeved vests but they are super pale!

But, if the sun not an issue…as long as it’s not 2 triangles which just seem silly on a girl with no breasts, and she really wants one then why not. The cropped top ones aren’t too ‘grown up’. I’m coming round to the thinking that if it’s practical and safe does it really matter! Too many people with too many opinions on girls clothing…myself included not so long ago!

liveforsummer · 12/07/2022 21:09

Not sure why a 5 year old in a swim lesson needs to look professional 😆 but as you say you're re-evaluating that yourself

Namechange357 · 12/07/2022 21:15

Only if using biking bottoms with rash vest, as rash vest over a swim suit is a pain for toilet breaks, esp if wearing any kind of float jacket thing on top!

why not?

shreddednips · 12/07/2022 21:38

Can't see any issue with it. I wouldn't buy one of those triangle ones (mainly because they just don't seem practical to jump around on the beach in with all that tying up business) but the type you've posted looks comfortable and practical. One pieces are a pain in the arse to go to the loo in, and no one would blink at a boy of the same age wearing just a pair of trunks. Why shouldn't girls enjoy the same practicality?

I agree with PP that the idea that weirdos on the beach is a reason not to let a girl wear a bikini. A weirdo will be a weirdo whatever a child is wearing, sadly.

Well during the 1976 heatwave I wore a red polka dot very ruffled bikini that had more fabric than the average tablecloth and was completely elasticated, made me feel fabulous and I could prance around singing Fernando on the beaches of the Isle of Wight. Age the same as poster question about child..I still remember the complete joy and loving the ruffles. Plus could have a handy wee anytime. Bikinis are fabulous. I'm well old now and you can't persuade me otherwise no matter how fat or old I am.

I also had a bikini at the age of about five that was just fabulous. It was green with a fish scale pattern on and I truly, truly believed that I looked just like a mermaid in it. I can actually remember a bit of resistance from my parents about it being too 'grown up' when I saw it in the shop and my grandma telling them there was nothing wrong with it 😁 so the mermaid bikini was mine, and I've never had one quite as nice since! I was also given a very special 'holiday' dress that was red with ruffles on the skirt and thinking that was absolutely brilliant too- best holiday wardrobe ever.

PrachtStück · 12/07/2022 21:49

I come from a seaside small town in Spain (not touristy at all) and girls don’t wear a top on the beach until age 7/8/9 depending on development rate. Even small 10 year olds are seen with just the bottom part of the costume. Shops sell them that way. Kids are on the beach every day between June and September. It is not an issue.

CatLadyDrinksGin · 12/07/2022 22:21

Ncwinc · 12/07/2022 15:02

No, rash vest and bottoms or a tankini where the bottom of the top meets the waist band of the bottoms. They give good sun protection and are easier than a one piece when they need the loo.

This

Tallulasdancingshoes · 12/07/2022 22:24

My dd is 6 and she’s got a 2 piece this year. It’s like a crop top and knickers. It’s age appropriate with cute toucans on. Not at all what an adult would wear. I don’t mind the extra sun cream because it’s loads loads easier when she needs the loo. I hate having to try and pull up a wet swimming costume.

Stumpedasatree · 12/07/2022 22:26

As a young girl, my friends and I just wore the bikini bottoms - it was perfectly accepted and normal for girls before puberty (not in the UK but a tropical country). And so much comfier and more practical than a swimsuit.

Step away from the local news reporting and naming child molesters? Why should I??? Do people not deserve to know when they're living amongst them? I didn't say my knowledge came from "tabloids" either but feel free to come to your own ignorant conclusion and as for "misinformation" are you saying it's all lies and these things don't happen??
