Genuine question.
When did it become not acceptable for girls not to have bikinis and for it to be shocking to ask if they can wear them.
I'm out of touch clearly,as I only had biys but we gave photos of the kids and their cousins in the paddling pool in our garden from about 10/12 tears ago and the littlies had bikinis on , like their big sisters.
I remember being very young and having an absolute favourite bikini and there's pictures of me at Blackpool aged 6 wearing it.

Exactly this! My daughter wore a bikini on holiday. It's easier to go the toilet. If people have a problem with it then it's themselves they need to have a word with and why THEY think it's inappropriate. Boys can wear trunks with no tops what's the difference. It says more about themselves than the parents who let the kid wear what they like or comfortable in.

I would of been the no way person but after taking dd3 to the beach this weekend in ds old swim shorts because of ease of toilet trips I'm going to get her a tankini next year. Or bakini pants and rash vest.

I think a tankini is much more practical than a bikini. They're fine.

So unnecessary

Sun suit is the way to go or swim suit if at indoor pool

LilyMarshall · 12/07/2022 18:35

Of course a five year old can wear a bikini. Just cover them well and constantly in sun cream.

Here here Janice!!

If people really think a young child in a bikini 'sexualises' them, then I seriously wouldn't want them anywhere near children!!!

Snap.

Depends on the style - sporty ones make it way easier to go to the loo if you're planning on a day by the pool/beach?

This is such a good point, I had never thought of that.
seriously reconsidering how badly I used to judge parents for putting their children in bikinis now!

ldontWanna · 12/07/2022 18:44

I'm not a fan and there are definitely some styles out there that are completely inappropriate. I prefer tshirt/shorts type swimsuits (coverage, comfort and sun safety)for DD and it's also what she goes for now (10) .That being said, she's your kid and if she's happy, and you're happy with it that's all that counts.

Sallypally0 · 12/07/2022 18:47

No.

Chavtastic and not enough sun protection.

I’d empower her to wear what the fuck she likes and not listen to a load of women she doesn’t know telling her what to wear. If anyone thinks you’re sexualising her because she’s wearing a certain item of clothing then I’d suggest it’s their problem.

I sometimes think MN exists in a separate universe.

Some kids bikinis are mini versions of adult ones, designed to enhance/emphasise certain attributes. On little kids they just look wrong.

DogsAndGin · 12/07/2022 18:57

I’m not convinced it’s about UV cover - no one has a problem with little boys wearing speedos or shorts, as is very common. It never occurred to me that a bikini is sexual, it’s just a practical way to go swimming - much more convenient for going to the loo than a one-piece 🤷🏼‍♀️ I wear a bikini, and I’m not trying to be sexy, I’m just swimming. The ones I’ve seen for little girls are cute and age appropriate - not high cut or thongs or padded bras etc. If you think a swimming costume is more appropriate because it hides a little girls’ tummy for being ‘too sexy’, then you’ve lost me.

ldontWanna · 12/07/2022 19:15

Is this sexy? No.
Is it completely pointless , of no benefit and completely age inappropriate? Yes.

Hallo Sally. Can you explain chavtastic, please?

Thanks.

ThisBloodyWeatherIsKillingMe · 12/07/2022 19:25

Definitely not

Clymene · 12/07/2022 19:26

Why are you covering a small child's nipples if you're not sexualising them?

Oooo look another one!

You do realise you instantly make yourself look dreadful (and some may say cheap/chavvy etc) by lacking decent manners?

Unforgettablefire · 12/07/2022 19:51

I'm not a weirdo or sexualising kids and I can see where some people are coming from. There are some sick men out there looking at kids in this way it's all I'm reading about in the local news. Maybe it's just people wanting to keep kids protected from these vile specimens.

Divebar2021 · 12/07/2022 20:00

Bikinis don’t need to be a triangle top and Brazilian tanga. They can be a cropped top and look quite sporty. I posted a thread years ago about DD who wanted to wear a bikini and my FIL was very anti - the general consensus was “ WTF has it got to do with granddad what she wears”? Seems like things have regressed since then. The last time we had a beach holiday all the European kids wore frilly bikinis and it was only the occasional Brit that wore rash vests. DD10 now has a whole range of swimwear and looks great in all of it.

Charlavail · 12/07/2022 20:11

Why is a bikini "bad" for covering nipples but a one piece isnt?

Because a bikini top is to cover tits obviously. Babies and little girls don't have them.

Sorry but the 'vile specimens' don't care what they are wearing.

Scissor · 12/07/2022 20:15

Well during the 1976 heatwave I wore a red polka dot very ruffled bikini that had more fabric than the average tablecloth and was completely elasticated, made me feel fabulous and I could prance around singing Fernando on the beaches of the Isle of Wight. Age the same as poster question about child..I still remember the complete joy and loving the ruffles. Plus could have a handy wee anytime. Bikinis are fabulous. I'm well old now and you can't persuade me otherwise no matter how fat or old I am.

zoeFromCity · 12/07/2022 20:17

Anyone willing to put a young girl into a one piece just to avoid bikini is evil.

Such an unbelievably naive attitude
