Yes or no

No - no need for anything which sexualises little girls bodies in that way. Same goes for lunging, high cut swimming costumes and the kind which are cut to show off half of the bum cheeks. They need far more UV cover at that age too.

willowglass · 12/07/2022 15:20

No no no

FreezyFreezy · 12/07/2022 15:21

Not sure what the problem is tbh. I had a bikini at that age. A blue, frilly, poofy thing. There's a photo of me in it on a donkey on Cleethorpes beach.

two piece, yes. bikini, no. they're a bugger to get sunscreen on at the best of times without needing to do their entire body.

liveforsummer · 12/07/2022 15:30

Far handier imo for going to the toilet. Mine have always preferred bikinis

liveforsummer · 12/07/2022 15:32

Ruffelo · 12/07/2022 15:05

No. They need much better sun protection

OP has not stated this is for outdoors or somewhere hot. Could be for a swimming pool or the north of Scotland

Blankbias · 12/07/2022 15:36

With all the long sleeve rash vests about that have 50spf protection, why you would choose not to protect your child from the sun as best you can?

trevthecat · 12/07/2022 15:37

I have no problem with my daughter wearing one

Why do you ask? Pretty lazy OP.

What do you mean?

I have photos of me back in the 70's aged about 3/4 wearing bikinis in paddling pools and at the beach.

Bikinis are much easier for little girls when they need to go to the toilet.

Looks like you just rocked up to start a bunfight.

Letterspostname · 12/07/2022 15:44

I spent a lot of my time on the beach in my pants as a child. Lots of photos too and there’s nothing sexual about it.

If a girl wants to wear a bikini then let them!

In the blazing sun I’d put mine in a rash vest and bottoms but if the weather isn’t too hot then I have no issue with my daughter wearing a bikini. I wear one and she wants to be like me. She’s got no more to cover up than my DS. No one would care less if he was running about in small swimming trunks.

PutinIsAWarCriminal · 12/07/2022 15:44

I had bikinis at this age - we didn't know about skin damage though! I imagine a bikini would be more of a tank top style then Love Island style at this age, so don't see a problem. I always went for a two piece UV protective for both my dd and ds. If they just wore bathers then my dd wore a one piece swim suit.

No...
DD saw a bikini in Tesco a few weeks ago and asked for one. I said I wasn't sure. Mentioned it to her dad who said "If she wants one get her one, what's the problem?"
Today I saw one in Primark for £3 so I got her one but can't really imagine her in them. She was thrilled. Both bikinis were crop tops ans knickers type things.

Just out of curiosity why is that worse than her going bare chested (though I can imagine she will just wear the knickers at some points)

I have no issue with bare chests on girls but object to covering nipples with “adult” style bikinis on very young children. Either properly covered with a rash vest or similar for sun protection or warmth or nothing at all.

Northernsoullover · 12/07/2022 15:49

I'd just use a rash vest and bottoms tbh. This applies to boys and girls. I am a huge believer in sun protection and a rash vest is better than cream.

sleepyhoglet · 12/07/2022 15:51

I'm mid 30s and there are pics of me on holiday in Greece or Tunisia as a toddler wearing one! Don't think we had rash vests back then.

avocadotofu · 12/07/2022 15:51

Surely a rash vest and shorts would be better. I don't like bikinis on small children personally.

Skinterior · 12/07/2022 15:53

Depends what it looks like. Much easier for bathroom visits

Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas · 12/07/2022 15:53

Nope. Full UV suits still here for maximum sun protection.

liveforsummer · 12/07/2022 15:54

They aren't adult style bikinis though they are cropped top sports style and those going on about uv protection - op hasn't mentioned that they are solely for use in hot sunshine or even outdoors. I often used to get 3 pieces and I've seen a lot in stores atm so they have their bikini for the pool and a UV top to put on for the beach which could then be taken off when it started to cool in late afternoon as the wet material can get chilly clinging to skin

Horizons83 · 12/07/2022 15:55

Ha ha I was literally 5 minutes ago looking at a photo of myself in the 80s wearing one at age 5. Didn't seem an issue then and didn't think it looks sexualised.. but I wouldn't buy one for my daughter now, don't know why. And to be fair I suspect I've not worn one myself since then!

easyday · 12/07/2022 15:55

Yes my daughter has worn a two piece at that age. Something along these lines

I didn't actually know what a rash vest is so I googled it. They seem a good idea. When dd was little on holiday I tried to protect her from the sun by putting t short on over her swimming costume and was told by the pool attendant that she was not allowed in with it on.

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 12/07/2022 15:56

Fine as long as they’re not adult style triangle bikinis. Much more practical for toilet and can swop the top half for a uv top ( or dispense with entirely if you feel like it). Nothing sexualised about a young child having skin visible imo, and in a hot place it’s comfortable to be wearing less. Don’t you like the feel of the sun and the sea on your skin? I know I do. Obviously need to be sensible about sun exposure but that’s also true of a swimsuit.
