Is this a genuine Kanken backpack?

My 14yo has requested one of these bags:

www.fjallraven.com/uk/en-gb/bags-gear/kanken/kanken-bags/kanken

as all her friends are getting one for next month going back to school. I told her absolutely no way at that price. She needs to shop around or check eBay for a good condition second hand one etc and come back to me if she can find something closer to the £30 mark.

She is adamant she wants a Kanken and found this but is worried it’s a fake and will be of rubbish quality?

I at first thought it was a mini version hence the price but it definitely says it’s the standard size one at 16 inches (the mini one is 7 inches).

Before we submit card details, can anyone tell me if there is anything obvious we’re missing here? Why is it so cheap? Is it second hand? In which case, why doesn’t it say so on the product details?

Clicking through that listing it shows the seller is based in China so I'd personally be wary.

I got DD her Kanken last year from Outdoor Gear. £65 but they are an authorised seller. And it has worn really well. Used daily since September and it's in great condition still.

BertieBotts · 10/07/2022 10:14

Looks like a marketplace type site, therefore probably fake

Troopod · 10/07/2022 10:14

Highly likely fake, seller has gb in her name but profile says from China.
If it was authentic they wouldn't be mass selling at such a huge discounted price for an authentic one, they're pricing at even cheaper than the fake wish ones.

If course it’s fake. If you want the quality you have to pay the price.

FVFrog · 10/07/2022 10:15

Fake, sorry. What you actually receive may not look anything like the picture

HappyandYouKnowitClapYourHands · 10/07/2022 10:17

Ahhh thanks. I’ll report the seller.

I’ll keep on hunting with her for a slightly cheaper one than buying from Kanken directly.

Manomano has terrible reviews on Trustpilot.

timtam23 · 10/07/2022 10:20

@Grandadwasthatyou I was just about to post the same. Loads of complaints about faulty/undelivered items and poor customer service

chipsandpeas · 10/07/2022 10:21

theres a few on vinted
www.vinted.co.uk/vetements?search_text=kanken

Forestdweller11 · 10/07/2022 10:21

There are quite a few YouTube videos on how to spot a fake kanken. When you see a listing you need loads of photographs showing stitching, zips, labels, buttons and inside etc so that you can weigh up the pros and cons.

Agree that that listing looks like a fake.

We have two that I got off eBay second hand. They ticked all the right boxes (after looking at YouTube!!!! and seeing real ones in real life) . They have worn okay. But they aren't the comfiest backpack to wear as they are so oblong and I definitely wouldn't have paid full price.

We got quite a bit of comparing at school and some 'mines real, yours is a fake' type comments. Normally from those who had bought an obvious fake...

AssignedSlytherinAtBirth · 10/07/2022 10:22

My DIL is Danish and she buys them from ebay at around £30. She says the site keeps getting taken down but then comes back again. She thinks they are genuine. She bought one for me, and it's excellent quality. It has the logo on the zip pull, which I don't think a knock-off would bother with. So keep looking - it is possible!

dmb91 · 10/07/2022 10:23

There are loads on vinted in your price range, new with tags on

happyharpy78 · 10/07/2022 10:26

Vinted can be great, I've bought and sold loads on there and had some lovely items, but please be wary of brand new expensive items especially where the seller has no reviews, there has been an influx of scammers on there recently which is really sad.

HappyandYouKnowitClapYourHands · 10/07/2022 10:28

Thank you I will check Vinted and be mindful of reviews etc.

Keep and eye on www.mybag.com/brand/fjallraven.list?search=Kanken as they often go down in price there and are genuine. I don’t trust the website posted OP

CheeryTulip · 10/07/2022 11:43

I'm shocked at the price, I had no idea. Someone's making a very tasty profit there.

Emmelina · 10/07/2022 11:49

The cheaper one is fake. If you look closely, there are no accents over the Ä’s that require them. The background is also yellowish not white, and the whole badge appears to be screen printed, not sewn on.

HaveringWavering · 10/07/2022 12:00

Gosh, even the real one looks crap. The unpadded straps looks so uncomfortable. I can see why you don’t want to pay £85!

BertieBotts · 10/07/2022 16:55

It's quite a standard price for a school bag in Europe unfortunately :( Some of the primary school bags are hundreds of Euros, it's absolutely insane. They tell you that the children need an "ergonomic" bag Hmm try not making them carry something that weighs 2kg and it won't need to be ergonomic???

Secondary school isn't so bad but I still found €100 to be a normal price Confused I long for the £20 Argos sport branded backpack Grin

But that backpack isn’t remotely ergonomic. It has unpadded webbing straps and no shaping or padding in the part that touches the back. I mean, it’s marginally more ergonomic than a plastic carrier bag, but you’d get a perfectly good little backpack with padded straps and a chest clip in Sports Direct for £30. 🤷‍♀️

Tomnooktoldmeto · 10/07/2022 17:05

DD has a few, keep your eye on HUKD as they often come up on offer this time of year, have also had a couple of good deals from Amazon too

BertieBotts · 10/07/2022 17:26

Oh, I know the Kanken one isn't. It's a fashion brand. I just mean they are Danish and probably priced according to the market there. I don't think it translates well to UK school bag price expectations! Of course teenagers don't think about such things 😆

Bungg1e · 10/07/2022 17:28

I have genuine Kankens from the site and fakes. I have to say there is little in it quality wise. I prefer the genuine for me but for a teen I’d save £60.

Bungg1e · 10/07/2022 17:33

My fakes have the logo on the zip. They were bought in Vietnam where the fakes are sold everywhere in markets for a few pounds. Definitely fake.

RavenousBugblatter · 10/07/2022 18:22

Kanken are notorious for being faked, so the only way you'll know one is real is by buying it from a reputable seller, e.g. directly, or from John Lewis etc.

They do look nice, but they're so uncomfortable if there's any weight at all in them.
