The roads into our village were horrendous yesterday

AlviarinAesSedai · 18/11/2022 21:09

@Someaddedsugar next to where old post office use to be. Think might be old Clinton’s shop. So top of Silver Street. You can’t miss it.
I’m going to visit next week when I’m off work. Treat myself to a burrito bowl. 😊

lifelongfrugaleer · 19/11/2022 10:18

Some of the kids from dc school were there, was it worth a watch? The channel 4 think

flooding has been a nightmare, we were watching the skern from the office this week

Someaddedsugar · 19/11/2022 10:31

@lifelongfrugaleer it was interesting but very business focused - not much about the general public. Where was it being filmed at? I couldn't work it out but they had some nice footage of the town centre and a drone shot of the market.

I'll definitely be giving it a try too @AlviarinAesSedai! Looks lovely on the website.

We used to live near the Skerne when I was younger @lifelongfrugaleer - it always used to amaze me when it flooded the Polam Hall fields.

It was in the dolphin center I believe.
There were some impressive trees floating down on Thursday

ZumaBeach · 19/11/2022 13:44

Happy weekend everyone! What a washout few days. The river was so high and full of debris and it has only just been cleared.

I wondered if anyone had a recommendation of a builder they have used to fit a kitchen? Not having much luck finding anyone in the Durham area so far.

lifelongfrugaleer · 22/11/2022 19:14

Has anyone done the rainton winter wonderland? What’s there and what’s the Craic ie costs, booking etc I can’t find info about it

AlviarinAesSedai · 22/11/2022 20:09

Good luck with finding a kitchen fitter. @ZumaBeach
If you are on Facebook could you ask on Mums in Durham @lifelongfrugaleer .
Coffee Bank at Chester le Street now has a lovely Christmas mural painting on windows.

lifelongfrugaleer · 23/11/2022 21:55

I don’t know a builder to fit a kitchen , sorry

i will search that group as I’m not Durham

Gilead · 25/11/2022 11:18

@lifelongfrugaleer Have messaged you with the name of the builder that did my kitchen.

lifelongfrugaleer · 25/11/2022 15:27

Got it thanks

I was also asking for a builder to fit a kitchen in Durham - would be very grateful for the recommendation if you wouldn't mind sharing? Thank you!

Also Sunday is the Christmas lights switch-on in Durham featuring Joe McElderry of X Factor fame! Smile

That’s me avoiding Durham tomorrow then. But well done getting someone I know.

Haha! There's also a Children's Christmas lantern parade in Durham next Saturday, which is probably more up my street!

AlviarinAesSedai · 26/11/2022 20:23

Ah the Christmas lantern sounds lovely. But it’s Christmas market time again. So I will be avoiding again. It will be heaving.
The last time we tried to see something famous switch on the lights, we couldn’t even get to market place.
So got hot chocolate’s from Starbucks and went home. 😆

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 26/11/2022 20:34

I'll be braving Durham next weekend as my mum is coming up to go to the warhammer shop with me and sort the dc out for their Christmas presents. Hoping it won't be too dreadful. On the plus side can usually find various nice edible things for dh's stocking on the cathedral cloisters.

AlviarinAesSedai · 27/11/2022 13:14

Yes, the food in the cloisters is normally nice. I just begrudge the price of the marquee.
Have a lovely nice, I just can’t cope with the crowds.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 27/11/2022 13:24

I've not been in the marquee since i was a student <cough> years ago and it was free. I'm not bloody well paying to go in to a tent to buy stuff. Plus it is so bloody busy that you just get swept along and can't get to any of the stalls anyway. Last time I went most of the stalls were selling identical "handmade" jewellery. A local craftsperson used to have a stall in there but doesn't bother any more as they too found that people were swept past and couldn't really get to the stalls so they didn't sell much. They found the outdoor market more profitable.

Ds just wants me to get the posh marshmallows that used to be in the cloisters before covid. They were a yearly treat. I don't think they go any more. I can get them online but postage is horrendous. Understandably I suppose to safely post very squishable things that you don't want squishing.

AlviarinAesSedai · 27/11/2022 18:06

Yes, that’s how I feel about the marquee. How any of them make any money.
The cloister was free last time and the outdoor market.
There was a lovely homemade marshmallows stall at Newcastle Quayside market the last time I was there. But that was pre covid.

AlviarinAesSedai · 01/12/2022 15:57

Anyone going to Christmas market this weekend? What’s Newcastle Christmas market like this year?
I seem to want to hibernate this year.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 01/12/2022 16:14

I've heard Newcastle is pretty rubbish.

Anyone else fed up of perpetual mist?

xsquared · 01/12/2022 16:33

I went to Newcastle last week and it was pretty thin on the ground. You used to be able to browse stalls starting around the entrance of Grainger Market but now there's nothing until you hit Grey's Monument and they're mostly food anyway.

Going to the Christmas festival in Durham tomorrow which I usually find good things in. It's better on Friday than Saturday if you want to avoid crowds. I go very early and I'm done in less than two hours.

Florelei · 01/12/2022 18:53

I’m sick of the fog @OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea It’s just been relentless for days now!

AlviarinAesSedai · 01/12/2022 19:21

The fog is awful, plus it’s cold now. Not crisp cold. Damp cold.
Hope the normal traders in Durham do well.
