If i buy a new iphone

The iphone 13. Can I simply take my Virgin mobile sim out and place it in the new one? Or do I have to contact Virgin? I would rather not alter my monthly plan. Sorry if this sounds dense, I am a bit clueless about these plan related things. I am currently using iphone 6!

I also need to update my ipad as I plan to create art work on it. Would there be a way to stop my cloud account sending all of my images and vids to it on setting up? I hope this makes sense! I would prefer the new ipad to be free of my regular stuff.
Hope some of you super techy MN'ers can help me out!

You can just swap the sim, if they are both the same size. A quick Google tells me they both should be nano sized SIM cards.
I just remember years ago a frantic dash for a smaller sim to put in a new birthday phone for DS. It was a nightmare!

no idea on the cloud. It baffles me if I’m honest.

Thanks so much for having a look! At worst I should be able to ask Virgin to send me a new sim. Never look forward to calling them as I have a nifty little plan that costs only £8 a month and they're always trying to get me to 'alter' it.

The irritating thing about connecting devices is they seem to just presume you want all of your stuff on every machine, aagh!

No, you need a new sim as they are a different sort on the iPhone 13s. If you go to the apple website, it will tell you the SIM card needed on the phone spec

Alexaspartyline · 09/07/2022 20:06

Ah thanks, I will have to phone them up then!

For the iPad you could always set up a different Apple ID and iCloud account. But if you have any paid-for apps you'd lose them.

Itwasntmeright · 09/07/2022 20:11

not sure about the Sim card, but when you switch on the iPhone you should get an option to set up as a new iPhone. If you select that it won’t download all your other crap. you have to input all your contacts and everything though as it will just set you up from scratch. There might be a way you can restore other stuff without all your photos but I’m not sure, Google is your friend.

hopefully someone less useless will be along soon.

Alexaspartyline · 09/07/2022 20:14

Just checked Apple it says they are both nano sims, same one!

I know my dad got a new sim when changing from a 7 to 13. Wonder if it wasn't necessary.

Glittertwins · 09/07/2022 20:22

Hopefully this will work!

If they are both nano sims which there are, you can just swap the sim from one phone to the other. No need to tell Virgin at all which in handy!

BoredatHome321 · 09/07/2022 20:24

With the new Ipad, when setting it up just create a new AppleID and it won't transfer everything over. If you follow the instructions step by step it is really simple, honest! 😊

Are you sure? I workwith someone picked up an iPhone 13 on his lunch break and came back and I'm sure I saw him chnage over from his old phone, not an iPhone user so not sure of the model but I'm sure he simply swapped it over.

BoredatHome321 · 09/07/2022 20:26

Sorry, me again. Or, in regards to the ipad, you can use the same AppleID but click the option set up as a new device.

found this on the Apple website

Glittertwins · 09/07/2022 20:29

@AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair - yes, he phoned up to ask and was sent a new sim for the 13.

Much muttering because of course they switched off his old one so had no phone for 48 hours as it got delayed too.

LondonQueen · 09/07/2022 20:31

If you want a new phone, can you really not hold out 2 months til the new phone is out, you can either pay roughly the same for the all new iPhone 14, or the 13 will be cheaper.

chiffchaffchiff · 09/07/2022 20:31

I went from a 7 to a 13 mini and didn't need a new sim. You just need to make sure it's either a virgin iPhone or one that isn't locked to a specific provider.

Hugasauras · 09/07/2022 20:33

I just went from XR to 13, no new sim. Unless you have a very old phone your sim is most likely already the smallest size.

Hugasauras · 09/07/2022 20:34

Pretty sure iPhone 6 is also a nano sim so it will be compatible.

Alexaspartyline · 09/07/2022 20:35

Thanks to everyone for this info. I had no idea there was a new phone out - worth pausing maybe? I take a lot of photos with it for work (illustration) so the camera is important above all.

This has been really helpful x

My sim from my 6s fitted fine in my new iPhone 13 pro (and it’s an amazing phone❤️).

Alexaspartyline · 09/07/2022 21:13

It seems the new iPhone 14 will possibly have a 48 megapixel camera as opposed to the 13's 12 megapixels.
This has caused me to halt as the camera is quite important to me.
I will probably purchase the ipad and wait for the phone, unless this legendary new camera is only available on models over £15,000!

Rumours suggest the new iPhone will be a similar price to the 13, but knowing Apple they will reserve the 'perks' for extortionately priced models.

I have an iPhone 13. My previous iPhone was a X. I just took the sim out of the old one and put it in the 13. No problems.
