I'm finding the leadership race really interesting. The large number of non white and female candidates for a start. Instead of ridiculing them, perhaps people should hope a hope a decent person is elected.

Always Party before Country

With relation to Johnson sticking around till September, I’d say they’re putting Johnson above both the party and of course the country. There’s only one person this delay is good for, and that’s Johnson. I think they’d actually be viewed better by the public if they booted him out right now and let Raab or May be caretaker.

Yes.

It's all very depressing, if unsurprising.

It's also a shame that some of the worst candidates - Truss, Braverman, Badenoch - are women and two out of this three are not white. It would be good to have some diversity, someone who is not male and/or not white, but not any of these three, please.

I feel like another generation of The Nasty Party is about to be ushered in.

That is exactly what I hope for and that excludes the current bunch of candidates regardless of their skin colour.

Who do you regard as decent and why?

DuncinToffee · 12/07/2022 13:16

Missed out 'and sex' after skin colour but you get my gist.

None of them are decent. None of them will look after ordinary people. None of them care about the poor and vulnerable.

I hope for the best of what is a bad bunch. I can't find a decent one amongst them, can you? Hard as I try, they are all out of touch, right wing, self serving and/or corrupt.

I don't know enough yet to make a judgement. What I do know is that they are brave because they are all opening themselves up to public scrutiny. I think that in the main they are intelligent and public spirited individuals who could be earning a lot more in other spheres. I think the same about some Labour party people by the way. Keir Starmer, Yvette Cooper and Emily Thornberry to give three examples.

Depressing isn't it. The only comfort I have is the Boris loving brexit fans I know have realised they were wrong. Bit late but maybe a bit of hope for the future, I need some hope.

WaitroseWoman · 12/07/2022 13:31

From The Guardian:
'Cabinet ministers and other Tories are to blame for letting Johnson undermine standards in public life, says John Major
Sir John Major, the former Conservative prime minister, has said that cabinet ministers and other senior Tory MPs should have spoken about about the damage that Boris Johnson was doing to standards in government.
Giving evidence to the Commons public administration and constitutional affairs committee, he said* *Johnson’s government committed many ethical breaches. He said:
The government has broken the law, unlawfully tried to prorogue parliament, ignored the nationwide lockdown by breaking its own laws in Downing Street and tried to change parliamentary rules to protect one of their own.
That isn’t intended to be an exclusive list and it isn’t, but the damage from that is widespread and beyond parliament.
And Johnson was not single-handedly to blame, Major said:
What has been done in the last three years has damaged our country at home and overseas and I think has damaged the reputation of parliament as well.
The blame for these lapses must lie principally - principally, but not only - with the prime minister, but many in his cabinet are culpable too and so are those outside the cabinet who cheered him on.
They were silent when they should have spoken out and then spoke out only when their silence became self-damaging.'

This from Dorries:
Truss 'a stronger Brexiteer' than me and Rees-Mogg, claims Dorries
This is what Nadine Dorries, the culture secretary, said when she declared earlier that she was backing Liz Truss for Tory leader. (See 10.58am.) She said:
I have sat with Liz in cabinet now for some time. [I’m] very aware that she’s probably a stronger Brexiteer than the both of us.
She has consistently argued for low tax policies and I’m particularly concerned about the 14m people who voted for a manifesto and voted for a government that the candidate that we select, for me it’s Liz who I’m going to back, will continue with those manifesto policies and will continue to deliver for the government and the Conservative party moving forward.

She has some sense of self awareness then.

Or no one to back her Grin

Patel is not standing for leader

Pure evil has no friends.....

Roussette · 12/07/2022 14:35

Thank God Patel isn't standing... not that she would've got anywhere with a leadership bid.

I think I need to watch C4 on Friday 7pm. The remaining candidates are having a debate. I can then decide who is the worst of the worst.

Still not sure that it will be clear. It's an absolutely staggering parade of ghastliness. Even if one of the least worse flukes it to the membership ballot who has any faith they'll elect .... of course they won't. Pointless question

tobee · 12/07/2022 14:46

Just finished reading write up of John Major committee appearance. Then look up from phone and see him on my telly grim faced watching another shit show; England batting against India at the Oval. Not pretty is it Sir John?

Unfortunately @derxa all the candidates have repeatedly managed to demonstrate that they are not decent people, given that they won't let us vote, all we are left with is ridiculing them.

WaitroseWoman · 12/07/2022 15:00

Patel is not standing for leader/PM, true, but as I understand it all the candidates are backing her Rwanda policy. I don't think she's endorsed another candidate yet.

This is excellent news. It means that I am a stronger Brexiteer than Norries and Moggy as well, since I didn't campaign for remain it must be true.

The sheer number of gaffes make it impossible not to ridicule them, but I think most posters are also critiquing them.

Roussette · 12/07/2022 15:08

This is the latest as of 15 mins ago.

Updated Tory candidates and backers including themselves - need 21 by 6pm
Rishi Sunak - 44
Penny Mordaunt - 24
Tom Tugendhat - 21
Liz Truss - 21
Kemi Badenoch - 18
Nadhim Zahawi - 15
Jeremy Hunt - 15
Sajid Javid - 13
Suella Braverman - 13
Rehman Chishti - 1

I hope to god, the Poudland Priti (Suella) falls at the first fence.

And yes, I will ridicule them as much as I want. What else is left for us to do.

tobee · 12/07/2022 15:11

I'm gonna call it Sunak and Truss on the final ballot.

NB I'm normally a) not good at guessing these things b) bring people bad luck anyway

Roussette · 12/07/2022 15:11

If you want to see who your MP is backing, you can try here
Scroll down to put his or her name in.

Mine is 'unclear'. Of course he is Hmm
