I think the next election will be fought on 'it's the economy', and the cost of living.
Plus inequality. Social care - I don't know how it's going to be funded if the tax cuts don't stimulate growth and if there aren't the people to do the work.

We are an ageing population. Quite a lot of people who would have carried on working have become 'economically inactive' - not unemployed or employed.

This will become an issue that needs to be addressed.

I'm dipping in and out so don't know whether these polls have been posted already.

On the face of it looks like great news for Labour, but potentially people like Mordaunt and Tugenhat's tiny ratings with the wider public are simply due to low profiles and could be turned around with increased exposure.

That says to me "these are Tories I have heard of"

tobee · 11/07/2022 23:04

Which is basically what you've said @CredibilityProblem Smile

Truss has Dorries, Mogg & Cleverly.

So she's attracting the stupidity vote, then.

DuncinToffee · 11/07/2022 23:06

BREAKING: Labour will table a motion of no confidence in the government tomorrow, with MPs expected to vote on it on Wednesday.

Comes after it was confirmed Boris Johnson will remain PM for another eight weeks.

Interesting replies after that tweet

DuncinToffee · 11/07/2022 23:26

I noticed that as well, as if they were waiting to tweet it

Runnerbeansflower · 11/07/2022 23:27

Good. Make them stand up and be counted, on record, for their support of BJ.

L1ttledrummergirl · 11/07/2022 23:57

Well, it seems to me that the torys have set the bar so low only the slugs can get under it.

My tory MP who ignores her constituents has announced her support for Rishy Rich. Another reason not to vote for her.

The vote of confidence will be interesting as I think I'm right in saying this one will be on the record. It's something that can be referred to in the next election and I suspect that anyone who says they have confidence in Johnsons government at this point will be voted out by their constituents.
At least if they are honest at this point, yes there will be an election but they will have shown a little honesty and integrity.

Roussette · 11/07/2022 21:28

Braverman I find like a Poudland Patel. Both quite disgusting. She has a tenuous grip on legal matters which is worrying given she's currently the AG

She's very like Patel. I'm surprised she's never been investigated for bullying either.

cakeorwine · 12/07/2022 05:52

PMQs will be interesting.. No doubt talk about what Javid said - and then all the other comments from other Cabinet Ministers.

And then a vote of no confidence - where no doubt all those comments on the economy will be brought up

Roussette · 12/07/2022 06:41

So this is where we are... taken from a tweet...

Concerning interference from the ERG... so far today Rees Mogg told by Baker not to stand, he also 'attacked' Mordaunt in an interview and Braverman's camp have advised Patel not to stand - all so not to split the 'right' vote

The 'party within a party', the toxic ERG is deciding who the next Leader is.

Notonthestairs · 12/07/2022 07:30

I think the suggestion is that ERG a) will do anything to block Sunak and b) realised that they had to coalesce around a right candidate swiftly (Truss).

But yes they are paddling hard to get control.

Almost makes me prefer Sunak.

Notonthestairs · 12/07/2022 07:31

Sorry meant "right wing candidate"

The "right candidate" implies I'd vote for Truss!

Lonelycrab · 12/07/2022 07:35

She's very like Patel

Its almost like she’s trying to out-nasty Patel. Isn’t slashing benefits her usp?

And while we’re on Truss, shamelessly nicked from Twitter..

Zahawi seems to be getting more exposure than most on Breakfast News, or maybe it's just what I tune into.

This article sums it up, it's all very depressing.

Funnily enough I actually read it thinking you me at right wing. Goes to show how we know their stances so well now we see what it's meant to say!

Quia · 12/07/2022 08:49

The No confidence vote could be very interesting. In theory it would be utterly irrational for Tories who said last week that Boris was too untrustworthy to serve under to vote against, ditto those who voted against him in the internal VONC. They'll spin it along the lines of needing stability, but that doesn't would be totally inconsistent with all the resignations - and how much stability do we have with a lying, corrupt PM in post? The very fact that Pincher is still an MP shows how much faith anyone can have in Johnson's moral compass right now.

DuncinToffee · 12/07/2022 08:57

All valid points

-Cost of living crisis
-War in Ukraine
-Climate emergency
-NHS backlog
-New rail strikes
-Airports in disarray
-Spiking Covid
and these guys think it's cool to leave us with a government that can't make major policy decisions for 2 months?
Always party before country.

And just how much money will be spent wasted on campaigning

DuncinToffee · 12/07/2022 09:01

And Martin Lewis

Disappointed the 1922 committee are waiting until 5 Sept to announce new Conservative leader (aka PM)

That's too late. The catastrophically high Oct price cap announcement a fortnight before will cause panic, DDs will already be rising. It's not enough time for ministers to act!

DowningStreetParty · 12/07/2022 09:04

Always Party before Country. I can’t hear it when people say that politicians are all the same but I know already they will lie with their votes in the VONC

Lonelycrab · 12/07/2022 09:14

Always Party before Country

With relation to Johnson sticking around till September, I’d say they’re putting Johnson above both the party and of course the country. There’s only one person this delay is good for, and that’s Johnson. I think they’d actually be viewed better by the public if they booted him out right now and let Raab or May be caretaker.

newnamethanks · 12/07/2022 09:29

The only comments I trust on our immediate future have been made by Martin Lewis. The rabble up for Tory leader are comprehensively awful, not one better than the other. It's grim.

guinnessguzzler · 12/07/2022 09:41

Totally agree with that @Lonelycrab I'd think the obvious thing for them to do would be to vote honestly in the VONC and use it as an opportunity to bring in Raab. If I'm understanding the process correctly they could still do that and I think it would play much better with the public.

ClaudineClare · 12/07/2022 09:42

@Roussette that is a great article by Polly, but oh so depressing.
