I've assumed that Labour know they'll lose a VONC but, by voting to support the Government, Tory MPs will be tied to whatever Johnson/Zahawi come up with next (and they have yet to announce public sector pay rises which are likely to be low and may trigger further ballots).
And of course Johnson may still prove disruptive and we haven't had a scandal for a few days so who knows what is yet to come out.
That's just my guess. There is probably a lot more going on that hasn't occurred to me!

cakeorwine · 11/07/2022 21:05

It's quite amusing to see them all having a go at the Tory party record and saying what they would have done to make things better.

Anyone would think they hadn't been in charge for the last 12 years.

itsgettingweird · 11/07/2022 21:06

Has Braverman said she'll cut benefits?

It won't surprise me as she's always voted against social housing and disability benefits.

That's why I wasn't surprised to get no hope with my son being failed (he's disabled)

Quia · 11/07/2022 21:10

Yes, Braverman said she would cut benefits in an interview on, I think, ITV News. The rationale seemed to be that all claimants are lazy sods who should just go out and get jobs. Which kind of ignores the fact that the jobs are not where the unemployed are and I assume she's not offering to bus job-seekers to, say, the coast to fill temporary hospitality jobs. It also leaves out of account the people who absolutely can't get jobs because they are too ill or disabled, or have caring responsibilities for ill and disabled people. But never mind, cutting taxes, hooray!

Notonthestairs · 11/07/2022 21:11

She's said "we spend too much on welfare." And too many fit healthy people not working - banging the hate drum against those on benefits. Wedge politics again.

(I thought many on UC were in work already?)

Well as a parent of a disabled child in her constituency she can get to fuck more than I've ever wanted her to before.

itsgettingweird · 11/07/2022 21:17

And I'm someone who does work FT and ds works 2 days a week and attends college from sept doing a level 4 course.

But the tax credits I get for only being able to work term time and school hours to care for ds have helped is immensely.

They forget some people can work - but in our case ds can't travel alone or cook.

itsgettingweird · 11/07/2022 21:18

Did get! They stop in august and he gets a maintenance loan!

the80sweregreat · 11/07/2022 21:18

I'm beginning to think that Braverman might get the backing and the votes :(
I bet my nasty Tory MP votes for her. Ticks all his boxes.

Will be interesting to see what Tory members make of the candidates

www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/jul/08/tory-members-over-60-white-male-choice-of-leader

I can imagine that Tory members may have a selective view of the world compared to other people. (Just like Labour party members)

What they think are the key issues might not be what the voters think are the key issues.

Notonthestairs · 11/07/2022 21:27

One obvious problem with Braverman is that she'll say anything, support anything, ditch any law, to further her own career. I know they are all like that but she's been blatant. Zero principles.
There certainly won't be any Ethics Advisors appointments with her in charge.

Is Mordant any better? I know next to nothing about her.

Roussette · 11/07/2022 21:28

Braverman I find like a Poudland Patel. Both quite disgusting. She has a tenuous grip on legal matters which is worrying given she's currently the AG

But don't they just "need to get better paying jobs?"

Actually, it would be funny to see her at the Despatch Box up against KS, a forensic legal mind.
Funny... if it wasn't so worrying with her views

tobee · 11/07/2022 21:35

Just come off the phone from my 86 year old mum. She and my 87 year old dad are filled with disgust at the level of choices. Even though they cheered Johnson going. Mind you they are dyed in the wool labour supporters. They also live in a very Tory area

DuncinToffee · 11/07/2022 22:03

AS THINGS STAND

• Only Sunak (39), Mordaunt (24) and Tugendhat (21) have enough - known - backers to make the ballot

• On the right Truss, Badenoch, Patel & Braverman all have 15 or fewer nominations

• Same goes for Hunt, Javid, Shapps & Zahawi among moderates/tax cutters

Rumours on Twitter that JRM and ERG about to come out for Truss.

"This would be quite the coup for Truss, as the ERG contemplates a decisive move to unite the right"

All lovely

guinnessguzzler · 11/07/2022 22:39

The problem is we didn't pop the fizz last week as it wasn't quite clear whether Mr Johnson was actually going. So now we'll need to wait until September and we'll feel like we're celebrating Sunak or whoever getting in, not the lying bag of lies finally being finished. I think it will be Sunak.

Poll by Conservative Home of Tory members:

tobee · 11/07/2022 22:41

Hope that's legible

tobee · 11/07/2022 22:43

I popped a tiny bottle of co op Prosecco. I thought that was in keeping with my level of celebration.

CredibilityProblem · 11/07/2022 22:50

I'm dipping in and out so don't know whether these polls have been posted already.

On the face of it looks like great news for Labour, but potentially people like Mordaunt and Tugenhat's tiny ratings with the wider public are simply due to low profiles and could be turned around with increased exposure.

Fwiw I did a YouGov chat earlier which had as by far the top percentage from other users as none of the above
