If you have a smart meter, how much electricity are you using per day?

I have been trying to be very careful with electricity usage since the price hike. I live alone yet I'm still using £5 per day or thereabout. Is this more or less than other people living alone? I am doing two laundry loads a week, hardly using my tumble dryer, and generally trying to be careful. So how am I still using £5? Or is that not much compared to others?

Yesterday I used £1.94. 2 adults and 3 kids, 4 bedroom house.

whirlyhead · 06/07/2022 15:35

Depends on the size of your property really. There are 2 of us in a 3-bed mid-terrace and we use about £5 a day at the moment, but my electricity provider is putting prices up 25% this month so hoorah. That's the 4th increase in a year.

Thursday37 · 06/07/2022 15:37

Does the £5 include your standing charge? If so it's not that high. What sort of heating system do you have?

We have only just had our smart meter put in today as we have moved house, but in our old house we used loads (electric air source heating, 2 electric cars, toddler with tons of laundry). I don't have any data here yet (oil heating) but expect our bill to be in the region of £150pcm but we are still on a very good tariff.

Using about £3 per day for both gas and electric (hot water on gas). Family of 3, 1 working from home and on standard variable rate tariff.

How many KWH does it say you are using?

summer4509 · 06/07/2022 15:39

That includes standing charge too

darlingdodo · 06/07/2022 15:48

About £3 per day avg. That's with 2 loads of washing a week (no tumble drying) dishwasher on once a day. DH working from home with a lot of tech, elderly relative watching TV and with Sky box for about 12 hours per day, large fridge freezer. I've tried to reduce further, but not possible.

darlingdodo · 06/07/2022 15:48

Not Inc standing charge. 😡

IRememberXanadu · 06/07/2022 15:49

So far today I have used 11.84kWh. Not sure if my smart meter includes my standing charge. @summer4509 @blessedbethebutter what provider do you use?

I live alone in a 3 bedroom and this is mine....

Two adults, two DC, three bed detached. It's summer so currently using around £3-4 a day, depending on if we have the oven on a lot etc.

Not using the tumble dryer at all at present. Making sure all lights are off. Washing at 20.

These figures are based on our fixed rate that we secured last month. We followed Martin Lewis's advice and took a fix that was around 25% more than the current standard variable tariff.

I'm dreading winter.

Paranoidandroidmarvin · 06/07/2022 16:03

I’m in a small four bed bungalow. With my son who spends all day on his computer. I’m home all day and my husband is out.
normally it adds up to about £2.50.

Paranoidandroidmarvin · 06/07/2022 16:03

I did mean to add. Our electricity was fixed last year and we haven’t been subject to any of the increases.

blessedbethebutter · 06/07/2022 16:04

I'm with British Gas on the variable tariff. We are out of the house 9-3.30 most days.

ivykaty44 · 06/07/2022 16:05

I posted on here recently

i went away for a week and turned everything off but used 15 units costing me £1 per day

LoveBugBride · 06/07/2022 16:13

Mine is on average £3.47 for both gas and electric I think. It doesn't specify very clearly.

summer4509 · 06/07/2022 16:26

Just checked and my electric usage today is £1.61. Have used 4.34 kWh at about 28p each and standing charge of 48p. Looking back I only used 10 kWh on the day I did 3 loads of washing and used the tumble dryer twice.

Am with Scottish Power.

Lightning020 · 06/07/2022 16:44

£3.50 or so. We no longer use the electric oven as have air fryer plus no longer use tumble drier.

eurochick · 06/07/2022 16:47

We are using around £5 per day in electricity. Three of us live there but we have an adult house guest at the moment plus our nanny during working hours. Me and my husband are working at home so using power for that. I keep turning off lights and being mindful of usage but can't seem to get it lower than that.

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 06/07/2022 17:38

i used £35 Inc stand charge last month. 2 adults. We are really never in though, so no weekends infront of the telly etc. 2/3 laundry loads a week. Gas hon/oven.
Do you have an immersion OP? That can sky rocket it.

Startuplife · 06/07/2022 17:42

How big is your house? We currently live in a large 1 bed flat and have a prepay meter which is supposedly more expensive and I work from home full time with multiple screens. DP works erratic hours so is also often here during the day with the TV on. I topped it up on 31st March before the price increase came in and we’ve got about £5 left. So we’ve averaging at about £1 a day although that will have been on the previous rates as it goes on when you top up not when you use it.

HairyKitty · 06/07/2022 17:55

12kwh per day for one person in the summer (presumably no electric heating on) is certainly high.
We don’t scrimp and 5 of us, 4 at home all day, average 9 or 10 kwh

cakeorwine · 06/07/2022 17:59

It's usage that is useful, not cost.

We use about 4 - 5 KWH per day. Me and DS. Main use is the electric shower. 'Background' rate - so overnight and when things like TV is not on during the day is about 45 watts. Which is about 1 KWH per day just in background use

NewBootsAndRanty · 06/07/2022 18:00

About 3kwh/day of electric, plus standing charge.

HairyKitty · 06/07/2022 18:01

You must be losing a lot of electricity to something.

fudfootedfannybangle · 06/07/2022 18:03

We’re using 10kwh/day in a 3-bed 100% electric house.

washing machine on every day, kettle deserves an in-service medal, devices never off.

but no more tumble drying and very rarely use the oven as have gone over to air-fryer.

my appliances are all fairly new and not draining electricity.
