Today's the day my emergency can of tinned potatoes come into play. Thinking of making a potato salad. Do I need to cook potatoes first or are they ok straight from can?

Yep! Anything tinned is cooked, it’s part of the canning process.

soup is literally raw ingredients fastened into the tinned and cooked!,

SpinningForTheWorld · 05/07/2022 15:46

They're actually very nice - different, but ok.

Bunty55 · 05/07/2022 15:47

Tinned potatoes are one of my guilty pleasures ! Eat away. Open tin, drain and use fork :)

Hopeful16 · 05/07/2022 15:49

I'm with you @Bunty55 definitely a guilty pleasure. They wouldn't get as far as being mixed with a dressing to make potato salad! 🤣

Turquoisa80 · 05/07/2022 15:57

Tinned potatoes are amazing in potato salald

Dartmoorcheffy · 05/07/2022 15:58

They taste better if you rinse them in hot water first.

BlueThursday · 05/07/2022 16:07

Tinned potatoes are so good on a sunny day as part of a salad

WishILivedInThrushGreen · 05/07/2022 16:07

I agree with rinsing them first.

I always use them for potato salad.

Nadiya uses them for roasts.

@EmmaH2022 Yes! Mine turned out lovely. I had never even thought of buying tinned potatoes until I saw it on an air fryer FB group.

Tinned potatoes sliced into frittata with chorizo, feta, sweetcorn and peas is one of my go to quick meals - delicious

Thanks, just wanted to check as I know I can't microwave them.

will try it, thanks!

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 05/07/2022 16:14

I read a 'sort of recipe' (maybe on MN) where you took drained, tinned potatoes and rolled them in curry powder (maybe shaken in a plastic bag) and then roasted them.
Is that plausible or have I invented something fantastic or alternatively something really bizarre?

AlisonDonut · 05/07/2022 16:15

There was a time when tinned potatoes were cheaper than actual potatoes [In Netto], and I lived off them. Esp in a potato salad.

I microwave mine. I pop them in one of those soup microwave cup things (with a vented top) in their water and nuke for 4 mins, rest for a minute then nuke for another 2 mins. Lovely hot potatoes and I've yet to have any mess at all.

Tinned potatoes are so versatile. They are great chopped up and fried with chickpeas in a curry, or potato salad, frittata, sliced fried potatoes with chorizo and peppers, sliced on top of bolognese to make a pie, or even on their own with a little salad and pepper. They’re one of my cupboard essentials, and still reasonably cheap.

Annonnimoouse42 · 05/07/2022 16:29

they make a lovely salad mixed with hellmans, diced crab sticks, diceed tomatoes and chopped spring onions

That sounds amazing- definitely going to try that 😊

This is genius

ODFOx · 05/07/2022 16:44

I think they are blander than fresh newps so are better if you dress them with half salad cream half mayo rather than plain mayonnaise.
Delicious sliced and fried with onion and corned beef, served in a heap with a fried egg and HP sauce.
