Avoided it this far - today it's caught up with me

Covid.

Since the pandemic my world, like many others I guess, has now become a lot smaller.

I do go out and about, quiet times where possible for the supermarket shop etc - meet friends in gardens still for catch ups and take my own coffee etc.

DD negative but DP positive first and I've been avoiding them rigorously. Seems the damage has been done.

It's only a question of time - a day or so maybe? That Covid scores it's hat trick in this house.

No actual point to this post at all.

Both me and DH managed to avoid it until last week. Felt rough but tested negative so carried on going about our business. I decided to test again and sure enough positive. I currently have a never ending cough.

Unless you are CEV, this is way OTT, and you sound extremely paranoid.

Im sorry but you have no right to judge how someone is living their life.
If the OP wants to avoid crowds, meet people outside, be careful to avoid supermarkets, whatever, it’s her choice.
Just like can chose to go to festivals, go to a rave, get drunk on a Saturday night, have a ONS.

Who the heck do you think you are to tell people how to live their life?

Whatever the OP does isn’t t going to affect you.

Swimmingpoolsally · 03/07/2022 16:06

i assume there is a reason you’re so scared of this that you live the way you do. However you then go on to call it lifestyle choices, which indicates it choice and not medical requirement. Although even the cev tend not to live as you do.

im sorry you are struggling and I hope if you do catch it you are fine like the overwhelming majority of people and you can rationalise it and widen your world again.

We had fairly reduced exposure here, too.
DP and I work from home. He's been to a couple of concerts.
DS1 goes to work, but it's not a crowded environment and he walks there and back.

DS2 caught it for us at Centerparcs, and gave it to me for my birthday, generous lad!

We've all had it.

It's well worth avoiding, but it's not a calamity to succumb.

Drink lots, take paracetamol, and take it easy.

cannibalvalley · 03/07/2022 16:08

I remember reading early that 85% of cases came from only 10% of infected people. Some people are superspreaders because they shed more virus.
My DP gave it to lots of our friends who had previously not caught it even though they worked in the same office with people who went off with covid.

SingingInParadise · 03/07/2022 16:09

I don’t know @NewYorkLassie but I’m expecting my 15~17yo to be pretty independent too.

Apart from a few taxi drives, Im rarely involved anymore. My involvement now is around the table, talking about the day, ensuring they haven’t forgotten this and that (they are doing too many things that often clashes), helping with choosing universities etc…
They dint need me taking them to playgroup, soft play, friends and whatnot

Isaidnoalready · 03/07/2022 16:10

Dd has never had it I've had it three times despite three vaccines and I've had it bad the last two you would think my body would have developed antibodies by now but no

FelixDoublyDelicious · 03/07/2022 16:11

Still not had it. had horrendous colds and tested every day, but nope. I am also triple vaxxed

Have been to Ascot, cooped up in a minibus, no sign at all

It seems to be possible to avoid, don't know how though🤔

LIZS · 03/07/2022 16:12

At least 20% have not yet had it. Op, was in same situation as you until ds tested positive last Saturday, then me on Tuesday, dh has still yet to. Definitely not a given.

Sexnotgender · 03/07/2022 16:13

EarringsandLipstick · 03/07/2022 15:38

You're pretty unusual not to have had it by now.

The current dose isn't pleasant by all accounts, but you'll be fine.

I am surprised you are 'rigorously avoiding' anyone unless you are compromised in some way?

I only got it for the first time 3 weeks ago. Neither of my parents have had it.

SingingInParadise · 03/07/2022 16:13

@PrincessPark I’ve got the omicron version 5 too.

First time for me too. It’s much more contagious than the previous versions.
So far neither DH nor ds have caught it.
i have mostly stayed in my room but not religiously. A lot because on the first day I couldn’t get out of bed anyway. And I was still pretty washed out the next!
Windows opened everywhere - it’s summer after all.

So far so good. I’d say you don’t HAVE TO catch it even if someone in the house has it. Last stat I saw was that the risk was about 30% but that was pre omicron so I’m unsure if this is still the case now.

You dint develop immunity to covid though.
the risk of catching it with every single new variant is there.

Curious as to how you know?

I thought the tests only tell you whether you have Covid or not?

gingersplodgecat · 03/07/2022 16:20

4 adults in this house - DD caught covid, none of the rest of us got it from her.

GiveMeNovocain · 03/07/2022 16:21

There is quite a lot of middle ground between 'panic' and 'nothing to worry about'.
Whats the point in worrying? Stress affects your immune response. If you catch it better to go in relaxed and well rested. I've got it at the moment and haven't had a single worrying symptom and am following the same recovery I'd expect for a cold. Thinking about worst case scenario's won't help me avoid them. I'm isolating until I'm clear to avoid passing it on

NotAdultingToday · 03/07/2022 16:22

I havent had it yet despite working in a hospital throughout (not on any wards but with colleagues that were). I dropped mask wearing and have pretty much being going about as i used maybe with more hand washing than i used to but not over the top.
Ds got it and gave it to husband and i didnt get it despite sharing a bed with both of them me in the middle and being coughed on, i was convinced i would
Met up with the same group of friends and twice it spread round the group apart from me and another friend.
Met up with my cousin and she tested positive two days later but i didnt get it.

I have come the conclusion i either have a good immunity (have had 3 vaccines), and very lucky
or when i do get it its going to hit me like ton of bricks

CallOnMe · 03/07/2022 16:22

Everyone is going to catch it at least once.

In some ways it’s a relief when you have it as you know there’s less chance of getting again soon and when you do it should be milder.

I have caught it twice now and had 2 vaccinations.
The second time I didn’t feel very rough at all.

People are catching it more now because the rules have relaxed and things have reopened.

I have followed the rules the whole time and I’m glad other people did too.
But you have to be careful you’re not wasting your life by trying to keep extra safe.

fortifiedwithtea · 03/07/2022 16:23

Hi OP the 3 of us got back from Jersey yesterday spent a week on holiday. Were told first day the infection rate is high at the moment. Both myself and dd are high risk . The whole family are triple vaccinated.

All 3 of us are ill. My test was a very strong positive. DH faint positive and hardly showing any symptoms. Dd negative but she is as about as ill as I was yesterday so she must be positive. She got a negative result but doubt that is accurate. I got first signs of illness Friday night/Saturday morning.

first time of getting covid for any of us. Surprising as husband regulars works in London does the commute on trains and tube.

At some point we are all going to did it.

TimBoothseyes · 03/07/2022 16:24

DP has had it (1st time), since Monday. I've still yet to get it.

Footballsundays6777 · 03/07/2022 16:25

Covid has hit our household for the 1st time ever also, however for us life is as normal pre covid. We go on holdiay, work , friends , nights out, we’ve always been lucky and just missed it! This time not so lucky

ClumpingBambooIsALie · 03/07/2022 16:29

It's like people think being at risk is rare. It isn't. DP and I were both told to shield (I think it was about 1 in 14 people in England who were, sooner or later, sent a shielding letter, and that doesn't take account of all of those at risk purely through age), and neither of us was eligible for the spring booster, so the recent uptick in cases is concerning and yes, we take precautions. I'm surprised at all the people who are surprised at OP's continuing caution, because there are so many people who are either vulnerable themselves or care about someone who is, you can't assume "bad cold" is the risk people are taking.

TheFairyCaravan · 03/07/2022 16:36

We’d avoided it until this weekend too, however DH tested positive this morning. He had a sore throat and bad headache on Friday but had a negative test. He wasn’t well yesterday but we stayed in so he didn’t test, but tested this morning. He’s got what I would describe as a bad cold, but he does have a bad headache still.

I’m pissed off because we were supposed to be going to see Bryan Adams on Friday, which was DH’s Christmas present. It’s just one of those things though.

amusedbush · 03/07/2022 16:38

I know plenty of people who have had it but I haven't and neither has DH or anyone in my extended family. We've tested regularly, DH has worked out of the house the whole time (postman), I've been teaching face-to-face lectures on campus this year, I've been to crowded football games, in the office, to several medical appointments, on public transport, out for dinner, etc.

Since September 2021 I've managed to catch two brutal and lengthy colds, a chest infection, tonsillitis (even though I haven't had tonsils since 1994), a D&V bug, and I've somehow developed hayfever for the first time in my life, but I've never tested positive for covid.

OtiMama · 03/07/2022 16:40

We avoided it until this week too...Thursday had bad throat by that night had nearly all the listed symptoms...tested positive within seconds. I'm 20 weeks pregnant and have been suffering, especially the first night. My husband had symptoms the next day but took until yesterday to be positive. We aren't testing our 20 month old as he's in with us anyway, pretty sure he's got it although a lot more mild than us.

Herejustforthisone · 03/07/2022 16:41

I was pretty blasé about Covid. However, I know lots of people with it currently, all triple vaccinated (one person has had five jabs) and they’re all really sick. All fit, young and healthy. It’s a little perturbing. I mean, none of them are hospitalised, but they are really sick. It’s made me sit up a bit.
