Cleaning house before going on holiday

drinkingwineoutofamug · 03/07/2022 10:20

Who else cleans the house before going away? We are off camping for a week and I've given the house a good tidy, changed beds etc
Partner thinks I'm bonkers but I really don't want to come home to a full washing basket, carpets/floors that need hoovering and dust I can write my name in.
Adult son staying at home due to work , so partner thinks it's definitely a waste of time.
The only job I've given partner is to play Jenga fitting all the.camping stuff in the car

I'm home and the house is tidy!!
Bins empty, washing up done, snail watered.
Back to work Monday then back to wales on the 16th

Me too, though I always blame the fact I have several plastered walls that haven't been painted. Also have an access way beside the house, for several other houses, so I must get in from that too as it's black not pink.

I can wet dust one day & see a layer the next. Drives me nuts!!

@drinkingwineoutofamug I definitely try to leave it as nice as possible, sometimes more is done than other times.

A thorough clean here. I like to come back to a clean and tidy house. Also, our lovely neighbour will be in to pick up the post, check houseplants etc and her house is always immaculate.

MaxOverTheMoon · 08/07/2022 15:17

I always do a proper clean and change the beds, order a shop, make sure the washing basket is more or less empty before we go away. I'm always shattered after a holiday and the last thing I want is to have anything to do bar sort holiday washing out. Also I LOVE my bed so the thought of getting back in it with clean sheets fills me with joy.

Another one who needs a clean and tidy house when I come home from holiday.
Though this year BIL will be housesitting so it's not going to happen.

MotherofPearl · 08/07/2022 16:59

I always clean the house before we go on holiday as PPs have said. I also try to get through as much of the contents of the fridge and freezer as possible, and then pre-order an online food shop for the day after we get back home.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 08/07/2022 17:03

I used to but now we leave DD(21) behind I don’t bother so much.

Whatwouldnanado · 09/07/2022 03:58

Yup, every time. Just makes sense not to come home to a mess when you have post holiday laundry/tiredness/random stuff to deal with. Reference is usually made to 'cleaning up in case the burglars come' which my parents used to say.

NerdleNoodle · 09/07/2022 06:48

But .. but .... I don't understand how anyone can both have fresh linen on the bed AND no washing. Don't you all leave for holiday in the morning? That means either waking up and stripping the bed, leaving the dirty linen in the wash basket, or changing the linen the day before to leave time for washing and putting away the dirty linen. In which case it's not a fresh bed, innit ? <<<taps nose significantly >>>

Not overly, no.

I do ensure the laundry basket is fairly empty as I don't fancy a full one plus a week or two worth of washing.

Otherwise, I work until the day before departure normally and we sort out packing, getting rubbish out, taking pets to the boarders, tidying kitchen etc.

No time to clean extra, especially if the house is already at a decent clean-level.

clpsmum · 09/07/2022 07:31

I recently went away and paid a cleaner to come in and do it for me. It was lovely to come home to x

hedgehogger1 · 09/07/2022 12:51

I have a cleaner who cleans while we're away. Love it, she helps keep me sane

WorriedMillie · 09/07/2022 12:55

I do this, I love coming home to a clean house!

redwaterbottle · 09/07/2022 13:02

I do. I always clean out the fridge, wash the compartments, empty and clean the bins, then a general tidy up/ hoovering mopping.

FT123456 · 09/07/2022 13:26

Yup I always ensure house is clean and tidy before going away. Especially as when I come home you have all the laundry to do from your holiday

Champagneforeveryone · 05/07/2022 13:26

I wonder if this is an age thing and will die out eventually? We've just been away and DS(18) was agog that we would clean before we left. On canvassing his friends, it appears all their parents do it too but they all exclusively consider it to be bonkers.

I also have my car valeted before I go away, so that it looks pretty in the airport car park 😆

The car thing is another level

catinboots123 · 09/07/2022 15:13

Oh same. I'm not a clean freak by any stretch of the imagination but I hoover myself out of the door when I'm going on hol

ihavenocats · 09/07/2022 15:19

I can't live in mess, makes me very anxious, I feel claustrophobic. So I clean every day and it is always spotless before bed unless we've had a night out.

When you get back from holiday things get dumped down and it's a bit of a mess straight away so coming back and doing that into already mess would just make in a bad mood.

So I make sure the house is clean whenever I leave my house because it's better than me being anxious.

stayathomer · 09/07/2022 15:22

Had people coming to stay to mind cats while we went away so had to clean every last corner in case they went snooping. I’d rather not go on holiday then be trying to have an immaculate house after packing!!

Soontobe60 · 09/07/2022 15:24

I make sure all the beds are changed (ie 1 bed 🤣), bathroom cleaned, all washing done and put away, a freezer meal for the night we return (lasagne or chilli).
I go one step further. Before coming home, I sort all the clothes out into what needs washing and what doesn’t, put dirty dark clothes in 1 case, dirty whites in another both in packing cubes. Then when I get home, I can throw one wash straight into the machine almost before we’ve walked in!

Wishihadanalgorithm · 09/07/2022 19:47

Imagine coming home from a lovely holiday to a mucky house? It would depress me too much. Ours always gets a full going over with towels and bed sheets done as late as possible. It’s part of the ritual.
