Cleaning house before going on holiday

drinkingwineoutofamug · 03/07/2022 10:20

Who else cleans the house before going away? We are off camping for a week and I've given the house a good tidy, changed beds etc
Partner thinks I'm bonkers but I really don't want to come home to a full washing basket, carpets/floors that need hoovering and dust I can write my name in.
Adult son staying at home due to work , so partner thinks it's definitely a waste of time.
The only job I've given partner is to play Jenga fitting all the.camping stuff in the car

It is nicer coming back to a clean house after a holiday.

Thearex · 03/07/2022 12:06

We do too & I'm certainly not a clean freak.

Clean out the fridge, clean beds, bathroom, fresh bed linen. All laundry. Run a white wash with some soda crystals in the washing machine.

Last job is putting some bleach down the sinks and the bins.

We got home once to a really funky smell where the electricity had gone off along with the contents of the fridge. I could have cried, especially as we had been up for over 24 hours and spent 4 hours in trapped motorway traffic.

SingingInParadise · 03/07/2022 12:06

im the same but if my adult son was staying over I would kept it to making my bed.
id expect him to carry in with the cleaning/tidying/washing whilst I’m away

ImustLearn2Cook · 03/07/2022 12:09

Me too. I love going away on holiday, try to make the most of it. I also enjoy coming back home to relax in a clean, tidy home. Coming back home wouldn’t be as enjoyable if there were chores to do. And getting into my nice clean comfy familiar bed is lovely after sleeping in a hotel or on a camp mattress in a tent. 😊

Happytap · 03/07/2022 12:12

No way! I don’t have time by the time I’ve packed and organised two dc under three and got away in time for the baby to nap in the car! It’s not nice coming back to a mess but I’m used to it now!

drinkingwineoutofamug · 03/07/2022 12:13

The only jobs I've left for son is to put bins out on Thursday and to water the snail
But I have given her tank a good clean and soil is nice and damp for her.

Definitely. I even leave the house spotless before I go to work everyday but I don't have to DC to rush out of the door.

Nothing better than coming home from work and just being able to flop on the sofa and relax.

I do.

I also do my washing on holiday as we usually book places with machines, so I don't have the dreaded holiday wash to do either 😂

Mumdiva99 · 03/07/2022 10:31

Doesn't everyone? Occasionally I've run out of time and not achieved it....then you just have to let it go and not spoil the holiday.

I'll be honest, no.

bestbefore · 03/07/2022 12:27

Even better have the cleaner come when you're away GrinGrinGrin

Robin233 · 03/07/2022 12:41

Yes me too.
Lovely to come back too.

As a cleaner, I make sure I know when my clients are going away, so that I can arrange my diary to include a really good deep clean a day a two before they’re due back (sometimes including laundry which I don’t usually do, as a treat for them) - they love it!

Mybeautifulfriend22 · 03/07/2022 12:45

We don’t have kids so it’s probably easier. But on the days off I have before holidays we always do the usual cleaning jobs, clear the wash basket etc,
it’s so much nicer coming back to a tidy, but we are quite tidy and clean anyway.

olympicsrock · 03/07/2022 12:47

I’m far too busy tidying up work loose ends and getting clothes etc ready for the holiday to clean the house before going away. Would never occur to me to make more work at a busy time.

Theoldwoman · 03/07/2022 12:48

I definitely do. We don't use house sitters, so it's how I left it when we come back. I change all the beds, wash and dry and put away all the washing, dishes done, fridge cleaned out, floors vacuumed and mopped, bathroom and toilet cleaned, grass mowed, weeds pulled. If flying, then cars cleaned too.

userxx · 03/07/2022 12:51

@Anotherselfemployedcleaner God, I think I love you.

Jacopo · 03/07/2022 12:53

you have a pet snail OP?! That’s amazing!

bridgetjonesmassivepants · 03/07/2022 12:53

One of the best bits about going away is that my very nice MIL normally gives the house a deep clean while we are away. I change the beds but she does everything else. It's amazing!

Cervinia · 03/07/2022 12:55

I always do the same and have done for years. I also clean the oven and defrost the freezer. I change the beds and unless it’s a really early flight wash the bedding that came off.

Finally, If we are self catering I was everything and fold it before I come home.

sad I know, but there’s nothing more satisfying than getting home, emptying your case and putting the holiday clothes away. When you wake up next day it’s to a clean, tidy house with no washing.

TokyoTen · 03/07/2022 13:24

I love having a clean house to come home to. I used to do it myself, but I just ask the cleaner to let herself in and give the place a thorough clean whilst we're away. Best feeling when you're travelling home!

I always do. The DC laugh at me. I like the whole house immaculate, fresh bedding, mopped floors, no laundry in the laundry hampers.

It's lovely to come back to the tranquillity of a clean, welcoming house.

marcopront · 03/07/2022 13:34

I don't understand how cleaning the house before you leave means no dust when you get back. Maybe I live in a dustier place.

yikesanotherbooboo · 03/07/2022 13:46

Not spotless but yes to washing done; new or almost new bedding, bins emptied and very clean, dusting, tidying and vacuuming done.

sunglassesonthetable · 03/07/2022 13:59

I'm exactly the same OP. Can't bear to arrive back to things needing doing. And so lovely to get into a fresh bed especially after camping.

I suppose you"have" 😬to let your son stay there if it's his actual home. 🙄Love them dearly and all that but if he's anything like mine the full cleaning effect will be lost by the time you gat back sadly.

Enjoy your trip.
