but it’s in Norwich. I’ve never even been to Norwich and I don’t know why I was even looking there! It can only be a sign, right?!

If it was somewhere else it would be £1 million op not £550k!

Roselilly36 · 02/07/2022 18:48

Awesome, lovely historic part of Norwich. Norwich is a fabulous place to live.

If southeast is more your area, might this suit? inigo.com/sales-list/the-bakers-house

It's gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous, Quantly but would be a helluva money-pit if anything needs to be repaired and then probably only by an approved specialist who charges twice as much.

Even with an huge Euromiliions win I'd be wary.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 02/07/2022 18:57

I used to live in Norwich and its wonderful. However, the lack of parking would put me off that one.

There are some lovely Victorian and Edwardian properties in the Unthank Road area. Why not have a look there?

DH and I are in the process of relocating to Suffolk, where we won't know people, but are taking the plunge. We both work remotely and are looking forward to the new challenge.

In the 90's our Georgian house (that we love/bought) was furnished up to a similar standard.

It needed to be rewired and replumbed and then ££ things need to get fixed most years. I suspect that both the kitchen and bathroom were installed in the 70's.

I've only visited Norfolk in the Summer, but heating bills must be interesting (would you be allowed secondary glazing)?

Having lived in my house with a broken leg and, more recently, a twisted ankle have a think about how accessible it would be in 10 years time.

Is that negative enough?

Actually I'd also get a paper map to figure out where the routes "home from the pub" are and check where the Airbnb's are.

I am currently doing up a house similar to that. It is bigger with sizeable land attached...and I can tell you the money its costing is extraordinary. It may look beautiful, and this house for sale is certainly that...but the money pit comments here are not wrong for sure. These old houses need a lot of TLC and it is not for the faint hearted as electrics and plumbing alone are eye watering. Having written that...if I was not busy in another part of the UK, I would buy the house you posted for sure. Mad and reckless as that might turn out to be.

That’s also a lovely house - not as pretty on the outside but beautiful interior.

I do think that if I was a bit younger I’d probably let my heart win over my head. I need to be thinking sensibly now though.

But honestly, this is the first house in all these months of looking that I’ve absolutely loved. It just felt like fate when I, for some unknown reason, entered Norwich into the search bar. As I said, I’ve never considered it before and I’ve never been there.

Thank you all by the way for all comments - appreciative or otherwise. It’s great to get lots of perspectives, and if nothing else, I will at least go and visit Norwich now for sure!

Visit Norwich OP, everyone I know that has ever visited have loved it. Friendly people, great value, gorgeous sandy beaches, only half an hour from Norwich to the coast.

AngelinaFibres · 02/07/2022 19:30

If someone told you to take all the money you have in the world and set fire to it in one go and then go and sit in a dark and pokey fridge, that would be a similar experience to buying this house.I have a large Victorian house ,thankfully not listed. It is hundreds of years younger than the house you are drooling over and it costs a fortune to keep it even remotely warm. I needed to replace glass in some of my sash windows. £15.00 a piece. If the house had been listed, the correct glass ,which I would have had to use, by law ,was £50.00 per small pane. As PP said, you cannot fart without permission from English heritage. You will need a parking permit. That allows you to park somewhere in Norwich but it doesn't mean that, in the height of summer, you will ever find a parking space. It will wear very, very thin very quickly, particularly when it'pissing down with rain.Do your adult children have children. When they come to visit with 10 tonnes of baby stuff where will they park. Think very, very carefully.

Shitscared123 · 02/07/2022 19:30

Ahhhh I was thinking too there must be a reason you stumbled on this house given it wasn’t on your radar. It’s beautiful and worth a visit even if you don’t buy given the sensible comments.

Very sensible words. I’ve sadly come to my senses but it was a nice fantasy for the couple of hours it lasted!

I have officially become my mother. 😂When I was 24 and newly married ( first time) we wanted to buy a tall thin ,Victorian cottage in Tewkesbury. It was cute, it had quirky cupboards and stairs with door at the bottom and original fireplaces. It was at the end of a tiny, dead end bit of road. The parking would have been a nightmare. It would have been freezing. That bit of Tewkesbury floods every year. My mother said lots of negative ( sensible) things. It was crap .....and completely true. I am 57 now and saying sensible things. 😂
On a positive note,we visited Norwich last summer and its lovely. Well worth a look.

goldfinchonthelawn · 02/07/2022 22:11

Bit puzzled by the massive fireplace to heat a narrow corridor and the cupboard that houses a wall. The outside space is a bit sad and you could get church bells in your ears all night long if that tower is active.

Quantly · 02/07/2022 22:49

@AngelinaFibres I’m the same age as you so, by rights, I too should have turned into my mother and become sensible!

Cherrysoup · 02/07/2022 22:50

Why is there a wall inside the cupboard photo 11? Too cramped and zero outside space.

DontLikeCoffee · 02/07/2022 22:55

mothertrucking · 02/07/2022 18:16

This was my first thought too

And mine!

acornpattern · 02/07/2022 22:55

I thought it was to preserve an original part of the wall but may be wrong.

legaltigger · 02/07/2022 22:55

I've definitely walked past that several times !

Quantly · 02/07/2022 23:02

@legaltigger you can go and do a viewing for us and report back on the ghosts!

justasking111 · 02/07/2022 23:59

I lived somewhere just like this in Cranbrook it was definitely haunted. Found it on Google recently

Sillybeagle · 03/07/2022 00:23

ah yes v familiar with this area. Don’t know if it’s still there but there used to be a v popular Italian restaurant about 2 doors down (trattoria rustica). So a busy restaurant may be annoying?

On a fat more macabre note there’s : This story which is just around the corner-apologies in advance but you said you wanted to be put off!
