I’ve fallen in love with this house …

but it’s in Norwich. I’ve never even been to Norwich and I don’t know why I was even looking there! It can only be a sign, right?!

Sorry pressed too soon!
The path goes to two big plague pits so good thing you wouldn't mind ghosts!⁹

That’s interesting @Anatomical - that actually seems like a plus to me! Don’t mind the lack of outdoor space either.

The thought of spiders mentioned by @MrsMoastyToasty has given me pause for thought though!

That house is absolutely gorgeous!

hugoagogo · 02/07/2022 18:11

It's in such a beautiful part of the best city ever, if my budget would stretch I would snap it up myself.
It does always seem a peaceful street to me even though it's so close to busy areas.

IncompleteSenten · 02/07/2022 18:11

It's gorgeous. I'd love to live there!

But if you're looking for reasons not to go for it...

No parking.

door opens onto street.

Next to no outdoor space and what there is seems like it would be very overlooked.

Tourists are going to constantly be putting their noses to your windows. Some particularly arseholish ones might try to make you let them look round. We used to live in a picturesque village in an old stone cottage and the number of times I'd look out the window to find tourists in my garden taking pictures!! It was ridiculous.

Listed building so a total ballache in many ways and good luck trying to alter anything.

That staircase (and the ladder from the cellar) are broken limbs and concussions waiting to happen.

Like fuck will you get your furniture up those stairs without a huge fight.

Church bells. Our church is at the top of the hill a fair bit away from us and still we clearly hear the hour, the half hour, the quarter hour, (24 hrs a day) Wednesday is bell ringing practice and weekends are weddings and tbh I think they must let the kids swing from them too 🤣 Two doors down? It's going to drive you nuts for ages till you learn to tune them out. Then every time a visitor mentions them you'll start to hear them again and have to start over.

Woodworm.

That is absolute upholstery heaven. Someone has a very good style and can put things together.

Beautiful house.

This is a very helpful post! Did you really find people in your garden taking pictures?!

i can feel the ghosts from here op!

This was my first thought too

ShadowsShadowsShadows · 02/07/2022 18:18

I'm amused by all the posters saying it would be impractical to live in. We live in a listed cottage with similar amounts of steps and beams and fireplaces. It's lovely and I've never found it impractical to live in. In fact it hides the dirt and fluff from muddy dogs and children much better than the fairly new house we lived in before. And I love all the massive cupboards and hidey holes for storing stuff. Whilst we rent and therefore don't have to pay for upkeep, we haven't needed anything major doing in the four years we've been here, the biggest repairs have been replacing the immersion on the hot water tank. We are wattle and daub though so our walls are huge and it's very quiet.

Norwich is really lovely. We are just under an hour away and visit often as used to live closer. Do it OP, life's too short for regrets 😁

Violinist64 · 02/07/2022 18:20

Princes Street/Tombland are in the centre of Norwich and among the biggest tourist parts of the city. You could well have people peering in your windows. I am from Norwich and love it but would never live in this part for the reasons I have mentioned. Beautiful house but not very practical.

Oioicaptain · 02/07/2022 18:20

Norwich is a fine city, as the city sign states! Tombland used to be a bit studenty back in the day though as there was a nightclub and a few bars/student eateries in that area. I'm not sure if it is still like that. The area around the cathedral is beautiful. It's a beautiful house for someone who is unafraid of students and spiders!

EightChalk · 02/07/2022 18:22

Only if they throw in the harpsichord.

Violinist64 · 02/07/2022 18:23

Btw, whereabouts are you that makes a move to Norwich difficult?

IncompleteSenten · 02/07/2022 18:23

Yup.

Utterly shameless about it!
So beautiful... Just wanted some pictures...you don't mind do you (tinkly laugh) ...🙄 Tbf far more people took photos from the path than the garden but it was so intrusive either way. I started waving at them, thinking that would make them realise they were actually trespassing and/or staring is rude!
Most ignored me or shuffled off .
One or two waved back! 🤬 It wasn't a real wave hello, fuckers!

House was full of mice. Backed onto a field, massive back wall with ivy growing right up it. Mouse heaven! I had 4 cats and they still couldn't keep up.

When cows were in the field if I opened my kitchen window I'd have a cow poking their head through 🤣 that was lovely. Morning coffee and a chat with a cow.

3peassuit · 02/07/2022 18:24

I live in a similar house to this. No ghosts but spiders who’s ancestors moved in before the reformation.

TrueNorthernBird · 02/07/2022 18:24

Lovely house in a great spot in a very Fine City!

Violinist64 · 02/07/2022 18:23

Btw, whereabouts are you that makes a move to Norwich difficult?

Currently live in the south east. I’ve been looking in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire to move to. Norfolk hasn’t even crossed my mind!

Rensterdenster01 · 02/07/2022 18:34

Lovely house but we previously lived in a beautiful grade 2 listed house in a tourist location and it wears very, very thin! Pulling your curtains in the morning to have tourists taking photos of you in your pyjamas!! People constantly staring at your house! I’d also never buy a listed building again. It’s a bit of a nightmare with maintenance or if you want to do any home improvements to the house.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 02/07/2022 18:38

It’s gorgeous. But you wouldn’t be able
to fart without getting permission from English Heritage.

chocolateorangeinhaler · 02/07/2022 18:39

I used to live in Norwich and that is a very very nice area. Very hip and trendy and a conversation zone so you know it won't ever change.
The very ugly run down anglia square shopping centre is about a 5 min walk away but don't let that put you off. It's chalked up for demolition and redevelopment. So will only add to the popularity of the area.

EightChalk · 02/07/2022 18:22

Only if they throw in the harpsichord.

I was going to say the same - wondered if it was a clavichord under the embroidered red cloth in the study as well....

Ifthingscouldgetbetter · 02/07/2022 18:42

Looks very disjointed to me and doesn't flow and there's a LOT of blue that would need painting over imo. Quite dark in places. The parking would be a nightmare and you have to step out straight onto the road.

KillerQueenGunpowderGelatine · 02/07/2022 18:43

I can see that it's objectively beautiful, but it's exactly the opposite of my taste/ the kind of house I'd personally want to live in. If you love it that much, though, OP, I think you should take a leap of faith and move to Alan Partridge Country!

CottonSock · 02/07/2022 18:43

I probably couldn't live with the outside space bit it is lovely.
Check the building listing as it might just be the exterior. I.e. that kitchen probably not listed.
Windows likely to be.

Ifthingscouldgetbetter · 02/07/2022 18:44

Scrap last bit just realised that you don't step out onto the road!

bedtimealready · 02/07/2022 18:45

The house is lovely, but the lack of garden would put me off.
