What’s the tiniest thing about your home that you love?

And I do mean tiniest- location, size etc don’t matter. Just the one little thing that makes you smile.

For me, it’s my kitchen window. No matter what the weather is outside, opening that window always seems to just let in the gentlest of breezes.

The view from the back, mixture of fields down to a stream and then a wooded hillside. I love to look at it from my bed, to sit in the garden watchin birds of prey, listening the foxes, owls, hedghogs at night, the wind in the trees, rain on the leaves or the stream babbling. It brings me calm and serentiy and despite our house bursting at the seams it would take something very special to make me move.

My bath.
It’s really deep and I can be almost fully submerged in it. I also have candles and a bath pillow. It’s so peaceful and comfortable. It’s also an en suite so I can climb out of the tub and go straight to bed afterwards.
bliss

Our larder. It's the old staircase before house was extended. You can still see where steps have worn some of the tread away.

Seaweasel · 02/07/2022 20:45

@Mellowyellow222 Me too. Our house is nothing 'special', it's a 1970s terrace but I bought it because when you open the front door, you can see right to the end of the not very big back garden. I planted an apple tree in the front when we moved here 20 years ago and a crabapple in the back and I can stand by each and see right through the house to the other tree with nothing in the way. For some reason, that makes me really happy. In the summer, I can open both doors and get he house airs beautifully.

PipeScatter · 02/07/2022 20:45

My front door. It's a new composite door but I chose a lovely glass pattern that means at a certain point of sunset we get rainbows on the walls down the halls and into the kitchen.

The fact that I’m no longer attached.

The previous neighbours in our semi made me ill with their noise. It took months of living here for my shoulders to actually lower and to stop tensing whenever I heard a noise.

The way the road is I actually catch view of my house before I turn into the road, my heart feels happy every time I see it.

We're about to move to a detached house and cannot wait for the peace and quiet (aside from the noise our own kids make 😂). I genuinely think that alone will make a huge difference to my health and happiness!

What a lovely post, and my comment is not intended to turn it all morbid at all. Until yesterday, it was having my big, beautiful four-legged friend greet me with his ball every time I returned home. Even if I'd been in all morning and I went out for 2 mins to get something from the car, he would always grab his ball as if I'd been out all day. It really doesn't feel like a home at the moment, but I know it will again. Thanks for allowing me to share that.

My husband

Lavenderosemary · 02/07/2022 21:23

Our peacocks, ducks and chickens lifting their petticoats and rushing over to the house every time they see me. Watching the dogs and cats and birds interacting in the garden, in various little social groups with interspecies friendships or rivalries.

Lazy baths in our huge bath.

It's a slightly ramshackle old cottage, and we have curtains across the doors and stairs to try keep the house warm and the heat from he log burner in. Somehow that makes me feel very oldy-worldy and cosy.

Lillygolightly · 02/07/2022 21:23

I love my house, we are still in the process of doing it up but things I love are:

How beautiful it looks from the outside, there is a huge wisteria all across the front and 2 very established climbing roses and when it’s all in bloom it looks so pretty and inviting.

My landings, they currently un decorated and not looking their best at all but they are spacious and I really am going to enjoy the space when it’s all done.

My breakfast nook in the kitchen, lovely to sit at with a brew and see the roses blooming outside the window.

My snug as it has glass windows that wrap around and looks into our back garden. Lovely to sit in and watching the kids play and so cosy to sit in at night. I have my wingback chair in there and I call it my craft chair because I love to sit a crochet in it.

Lampzade · 02/07/2022 21:26

The triple aspect windows in my bedroom.
I can see the road, the side of the house and the garden

freakydeaky · 02/07/2022 21:36

The jasmine growing around our front door, it had been living in a large pot and was struggling but I was wary of planting it in the ground because the soil in the front garden is quite poor. Decided to take a chance with it as it was clearly unhappy in the pot and I’m so happy to see it thriving now. The tiny bright white flowers look like little stars among the dark green foliage and the scent as you open the front door is gorgeous!

RosesAndHellebores · 02/07/2022 21:41

The tinkly bells. We have the original, quite ornate iron bell pull by the front entrance which pull on a wire from which little metal bells hang and they tinkle when it's pulled.

bedtimealready · 02/07/2022 21:41

My garden. It's small but very peaceful, private and not overlooked at all.

dudsville · 02/07/2022 21:44

Lots. But the previous owners put a special hook up in the understair cupboard for hanging the ironing board. I never would have thought to do this. It's a little perfect thing that makes me happy!

Thepossibility · 02/07/2022 21:47

I have two. The way the light comes in through my bedroom window, it's beautiful. And the whimsical view as the sun sets. I often go and sit on my bed and just feel happy.
A buffet/cabinet that DH inherited from his grandparents. No-one else wanted it because it was that ugly orangey pine colour. He painted it just the way I wanted, total transformation! I love it.

LibbyL92 · 02/07/2022 22:33

We live in an Edwardian flat. And in our bedroom we have a Juliet balcony with French doors.

i love opening the doors in the morning and just laying in bed with the fresh air coming in.

@bloodybindweed
Oh I'm so jealous! I would absolutely love peacocks.

I love my mullioned windows. The original 1874 ones. And the acorn on one of the pillars, carved into the plaster by one of the previous owners.

Here they are.

The way the light pours in through our french doors at the back of the house. Bathing in the light on the chair, with the dog at my feet.

PennineWayinSlingbacks · 02/07/2022 23:25

Love the outdoor festoon lights - always makes me smile.

The hatch between livingroom and kitchen. The dog uses it to look out the kitchen window by standing on the sofa.
The en suite.

Mauritiana · 02/07/2022 23:39

Being able to the sea and hills from my bedroom window.

Squiff70 · 02/07/2022 23:41

Not the house as such, but the rocking chair next to my daughter's cot. I sit in that chair in her room and just cuddle her. The day's stresses melt away instantly. We talk, sing, do actions to songs, read books, chat about the various soft toy bears and bunnies in her room, just random stuff. I always feel so relaxed when I sit there holding her (she's two) and for me it signals the end of a busy day for both of us and it's now time for relaxation and sleep. Bliss. It helps that the chair is very comfy too.

I also like that in the Summer months, the sun shines right through our living room window around 6pm. It's a pain in the arse if you're trying to watch TV but if you lie on the sofa in the warm sun it's very soothing. Our bedroom gets the morning sun too, so on a warm, clear, sunny morning, it makes me very happy to open the curtains and think 'today is a new day, and it ain't all that bad'.

PleaseYourselfandEatTheCrusts · 19/07/2022 18:23

The coolness of the Kitchen. In the winter it's freezing in there, but it comes in handy in weather like this!

Fearnecuptea · 19/07/2022 18:25

Babdoc · 02/07/2022 15:08

Couldn’t pick just one thing. It’s all of it. The view of the Sidlaw hills from the windows, the smell of roses, honeysuckle and lavender from the garden, the open log fire in winter, my cat curled up on my
late PIL’s antique Persian rug, my new upstairs bathroom (after 40 years of the old one!), the Victorian dressing table bought for a fiver for our old slum tenement flat when DH and I were students… but mainly the lovely memories of living here with DH who died 30 years ago.

That's really lovely. Sounds like a dream house Smile
