What’s the tiniest thing about your home that you love?

And I do mean tiniest- location, size etc don’t matter. Just the one little thing that makes you smile.

For me, it’s my kitchen window. No matter what the weather is outside, opening that window always seems to just let in the gentlest of breezes.

The thing I love most about my house is that I've almost paid off the mortgage and I'll be able to retire and work part time next year. Other than that I love that it's got a garage and there's no through traffic.
Wish I could say its got interesting nooks and crannies and bags of character but it doesn't, its one of those houses MN locks to hate ! 😁

ilovebagpuss · 02/07/2022 18:50

The living room window has a lovely view of hills and sky, but the best bit is if you lie on the sofa you can just see a big square of sky and its always different and beautiful.

Elderflower14 · 02/07/2022 18:52

My large bay window... Its huge.....
My much missed Bumbledog spent hours sitting and lying in their and barking at people... On one unfortunate morning when the post lady arrived he took a flying leap into the window bum surfed, put his paw out and it went clean through the window! 😱
Surfice to say the post lady left the garden very quickly and I earned a few more grey hairs... Bumble was fine...
His ashes are now sitting in his wooden box in the bay window... 😪

If you asked my DH, it would be his 'man cave' with his chair and foot stool, his massive vinyl collection, record deck and bookcases. For me, it's our kitchen table, where I drink tea before work in the mornings and collect my thoughts, where when DH comes home from work and we have tea/coffee and chat about our day and when DD18 comes home from being out with friends or boyfriend and she sits and chats to me and we catch up - I just love it!

I do like a porch by the front door and I have what I consider to be a cottage-style canopy which looks pretty. The door also has a spy-hole so I can see who's there.

When a neighbour first saw her house on the same small development it was the blossom on one of the trees by the front boundary which attracted her.

notangelinajolie · 02/07/2022 19:07

My front door. It’s as old as the house which was built in the mid 1800’s. It’s my secret - nobody can see it from the street because we have a really ugly porch hiding it.

Its not the outside I love, its the inside. It’s huge with big architraves all around and looks very grand and makes me feel like I’m living in a stately home. I smile every time I walk up to it.

Sadly, home is not stately - just a 2 bed Victorian cottage but the door is something special - well to me anyway.

DH keeps trying to persuade me to replace it with a new plastic one but there isn’t a chance I will budge.

Mellowyellow222 · 02/07/2022 19:09

The view of the back garden from the front door😍. I love having the clear line of sight. Strange I know

NotMushroomInEre · 02/07/2022 19:10

What a lovely post, and my comment is not intended to turn it all morbid at all. Until yesterday, it was having my big, beautiful four-legged friend greet me with his ball every time I returned home. Even if I'd been in all morning and I went out for 2 mins to get something from the car, he would always grab his ball as if I'd been out all day. It really doesn't feel like a home at the moment, but I know it will again. Thanks for allowing me to share that.

prettyteapotsplease · 02/07/2022 19:15

I also love my mantelpiece which was a cheap 'put it together yourself' cheapo from Lidl and it fits nicely in the centre of my living room wall. My house is a modern cottage with no nooks and crannies whatsoever but that particular feature adds a little bit of character.

MintJulia · 02/07/2022 19:15

My bedroom. It has 4 windows, one facing east, two south and one west. It's surrounded by trees.

If I wake up early, I make a coffee, open a window and lie listening to the dawn chorus. Like waking up in a tree house. It's blissful 😊

Redbluelellow · 02/07/2022 19:17

The sound in the garden behind our house is a small nature reserve and I love to listen to all the birds

Badger1970 · 02/07/2022 19:18

We've got bats under our eaves, and every night when I take the dogs out for their last wee, I stand and watch them circling around the garden. I often lose track of time, and love that their home is sharing ours. We had an injured one a few years ago that the dog found, so we did quite a bit of research on them and took it to a local "bat lady" to look after. They're such amazing creatures.

Sellingstress · 02/07/2022 19:18

We moved here last year and I still get blown away by the view from my little log seat ar the top of the garden. Everything seems just ‘right’ there whether with a cup of tea or a glass of wine. So quiet. So beautiful. The rest of the house and garden is great, but that spot? Magic.

Georgyporky · 02/07/2022 19:27

In my first real home, I realised I didn't have to put buckets & saucepans underneath the leaking roof.
I've gone on to better things, but nothing surpasses that .

Oh I’m so sorry.

We lost our old girl last year. We love them so hard for such a short time.

I couldn't think of one earlier but I had a lightbulb moment. We made a change in our house last year which was significant but the small thing I like best is I now have French doors that open in the way so nothing fancy but I love them. They make my life so much easier when I'm trying to get something awkward in and out the door!

NotMushroomInEre · 02/07/2022 19:48

@WafflyVersatileOohOoh Thank you, and yes, we do. They bring us the most enjoyable days, and one of the worst, but that is enough of that. Your lovely post has allowed me to reflect and smile. So many comments of people finding joy in things that are not materialistic. They've been lovely to read.

NotMushroomInEre · 02/07/2022 19:49

@WafflyVersatileOohOoh sorry to hear about your girl too ❤

shakeitoffshakeacocktail · 02/07/2022 19:56

Built in cupboards. I have 2 huge bedroom ones and 2 hall ones 😄

Rented house £485/month so not fancy. It's actually a good size end of terrace, garden, 3 bedroom. In a village 😄

I live very far north England, near Scotland border

Moonflower12 · 02/07/2022 19:57

@bloodybindweed
Oh I'm so jealous! I would absolutely love peacocks.

I love my mullioned windows. The original 1874 ones. And the acorn on one of the pillars, carved into the plaster by one of the previous owners.

Gherkingreen · 02/07/2022 20:03

We have some vVelux windows in an extension we built 20 years ago and I still get excited lying on the sofa watching the clouds through them, all year round.

My potting shed.
It's small and crooked and a bit dusty which is understandable as it's over 140 years old.
It's got my father's old tools lined up and polished as he used to have them. It's got shelves of old terracotta pots and crocks that I've collected over the years.
My potting bench is pretty worn but along the back there's old glass bottles and stoneware jars that I've dug up in the garden or found in charity shops that contain my bits and bobs.

It has such a peaceful atmosphere and I feel endlessly comforted in there. I love pottering about on a windy and rainy day, tucked warm and dry inside - feeling like I'm not part of the 21st century and protected from all the worries of modern life.

This sounds magical , what a lovely thread , there should be more things like this on mumsnet.

yummytummy · 02/07/2022 20:09

my beautiful red roses that are next to the front door. they make me happy especially now when in full bloom. also remind me of the very early happy times with exh as the first gift he ever gave me was a single red rose and then roses on anniversaries at the beginning. also the fact it is mine and i have been able to achieve a house for me and dcs as a single parent single handedly.

Mosaic123 · 02/07/2022 20:18

My pair of sliding doors. They separate the lounge from the kitchen. They slide behind bookcases built with a 10cm gap between the wall and the bookcase so the doors have somewhere to hide.

Mosaic123 · 02/07/2022 20:21

Here are the doors.
