Are there any words you feel really awkward/self conscious saying?!

For me it's 'gig'. I can't say it out loud without wanting to cringe/wince/apologise. It makes me feel really fraudulent!

Am I the only one? Does anyone else have words they just can't use?

Willy.

Absolutely nothing wrong with the word but I struggle to pronounce the letter ‘l’ properly so I just sound so dumb saying it. Hate the word so much haha

I feel self conscious saying some mens names that seem really childlike.

For example: Billy, Johnny, Benny, etc.

I once dated a guy called Johnny for about a month in my first year of uni and I don’t think I ever said his name out loud once.

Same. Had a boyfriend for 2 years with a name like this and tried to even avoid saying it to other people. Never out loud in public to him. For any boyfriend, there's always that weird feeling when you say their name out loud but for his, I just wished he had another name.

@LetHimHaveIt Exactly, DH plays boogie woogie piano but none of my acquaintance will ever know because I can't say it without feeling really embarrassed!

I would be exactly the same. Exactly the same.

Croissant

Yep, this is mine too, I can't figure out how to pronounce it without sounding like a twat Blush

XeX · 01/07/2022 21:29

Disoriented

Always want to say it dis-orien-tated.

MammaWeasel · 01/07/2022 21:29

Has anyone mentioned specific/Pacific?

My nanna couldn't say certificate to save her life.

Leafsontheline · 01/07/2022 21:31

Cohort

as in, my child’s school year. Hate it.

overthinkersanonnymus · 01/07/2022 21:31

Turd - makes me gag

Hoolihan · 01/07/2022 21:33

makes me cringe, don’t know why.

BotterMon · 01/07/2022 21:33

Forward Is it For Ward or Ford. I think about it and get muddled

tellittotherubberduck · 01/07/2022 21:34

@SausageinaBun I have a lot to do with them and am reliably informed it's 'accent'.

Eyesopenwideawake · 01/07/2022 21:34

Pseudo. Can't unsay the P.

RunningFromInsanity · 01/07/2022 21:36

The name ‘Chandler’
It comes out as ‘Charndler’ and makes me sound like the Queen.

ShirleyJackson · 01/07/2022 21:36

Pianist.

It just comes out ‘Penis’ every time, so I say ‘piano player’ instead.

Yes, to gig and yes to people just telling you someone's nickname. "Here's Macca". "Well, he's not Macca to me, not yet."

Can't say uni - same feeling as saying gig out loud. Or chagrin. Feel it needs it to be said with flourish.

I was friends with my friend Hamilton for two years before I realised that Hamilton wasn’t his name, wasn’t even his surname, but was a really esoteric nickname his best mates had given him at uni. And I only found out when I mentioned him in front of one of his work colleagues who was all like “oh, do you mean Lee?”

I hate having to say subsidiary out loud, my tongue always tangles. Unfortunately I’m a Group Company Secretary and the Group has a lot of subsidiaries so I have to say it in front of people literally daily.

I remember a thread years ago on Mumsnet where a poster said she nodded off in a meeting, and woke herself up by singing ‘doo doo de doo doo’ after her boss said ‘phenomenon.’

Hilarious.

Anyolshit · 01/07/2022 21:41

‘Bum’. 🤮When a friend says she’s going to ‘change his bum’ meaning her baby’s nappy. Grim!

Onedayatatime24799 · 01/07/2022 21:43

I hated the "hun" phase. When everyone called each other "hun" on facebook!!!

psychomath · 01/07/2022 21:45

Oh also 'naughty', in any context. Makes me cringe when other people say it too. I have a colleague who says it constantly (he's a teacher so it makes sense!) and it makes my skin crawl, but I can hardly ask him to stop using a perfectly normal word Confused Oddly got no issue with seeing it written down, just spoken.

FrankGrillosFloof · 01/07/2022 21:46

Pumice. Cannot pronounce this stupid word.

Also have trouble with poem… po-em, pome, po-yem, po-yum… argh fuck.

Ah, you beat me to it!!! Yes I struggle with it, especially ‘specifically’.
