Redactle - THE HINTS THREAD

BIWI · 29/06/2022 09:32

Given how difficult it is to offer hints for redactle, without giving it away/being too obvious, this is a specific thread for hints.

Doesn't mean that they should give the game away, but it just stops other players seeing the hint every time they access the main thread.

So from now on, just keep your stats and general comments on the main thread and come here for any hints!

Hands? Up...down

InMySpareTime · 01/07/2022 20:22

Name your hands

InMySpareTime · 01/07/2022 20:29

Although that's still a fairly obtuse hint as it only gave me a pointer to the subject.

It's not something I've personally experienced but I am quite familiar with the concept.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 01/07/2022 20:43

that clue helped
thank you

Cooroo · 01/07/2022 22:36

Please tell me the clue was for Semantle (which I don't do...yet)? Because if it was Redactle I must be on another planet.

It was for redactle.
I got it purely by thinking about what would fit the word lengths and which would then make sense in the context of the unredacted text, but it's a good clue. The target wouldn't have both 'hands' though.

InMySpareTime · 02/07/2022 07:01

@Cooroo clue etiquette is generally not to give away words in the actual title explicitly but to direct thinking to the right area/field/era/subject.
Yesterday's -y/-em clue was to redirect from a layperson use to technical use of the word.
Today's hand clue was just expanding on my thought process that got me to the title. I noticed a hand word appeared in an unexpected context which gave a good idea of the subject area of the article.
I followed that subject with words about categories within that subject and got there quickly.

Any handy hints for today's redactle?

I have uncovered a few useful words but finding it difficult to narrow it down.

Redactle #87

Hm...
Have you got the 4 letter word before the first comma?

OytheBumbler · 02/07/2022 20:26

yes I have that one and now stuck!

My mind's gone blank outside a few obvious fields. It probably is obvious

InMySpareTime · 02/07/2022 20:32

Today's is definitely not obscure. You will have experience of it at some point.

It's a type of that word before the first comma

Or a drink (but the article doesn't mention that meaning)

OytheBumbler · 02/07/2022 20:35

Thank you - I'll keeping plugging away.

OytheBumbler · 02/07/2022 20:44

Got it - after typing in lots of drinks😀

Bytrgrewd · 04/07/2022 15:47

Where are the hints for today’s!

Bytrgrewd · 04/07/2022 15:54

Got it just after posting. Well got second word anyway then googled to my shame

Me too. And there's no shame! It's a game, it's supposed to be fun. For me (and I guess you) randomly guessing kinds of [second word] for hours with no chance of getting it right would be far from fun Smile

MsMarvellous · 04/07/2022 16:47

14 mins to a new redactle by my reckoning. 🤣

Bytrgrewd · 04/07/2022 16:55

I do like to get without googling but as you say when it’s something fairly specialised 🤷🏼‍♀️

now 5 mins to go 😁

BIWI · 04/07/2022 17:19

I didn't get round to it before the 5pm switchover - but from what I hear from DH it's just as well!

This one is good, I don't think it'll give people much trouble or need googling.

MsMarvellous · 04/07/2022 18:06

My accuracy is slowly improving the more I do. I liked that one.

Bagzzz · 04/07/2022 19:20

That took me longer than it should have.

Bytrgrewd · 04/07/2022 20:59

oh got it 🤦‍♀️

MsMarvellous · 05/07/2022 18:56

241 guesses for #90 😭. Over 75% accuracy though
