Pop lyrics that suddenly catch you in the feelings years later.

Just musings really, today I heard Everything But the Girl on the radio. I'm of the generation that probably heard Missing much too much because it was everywhere for a while, but I was reflecting that 'and I miss you, like the deserts miss the rain', is a belting lyric that maybe you need to have lived/loved/lost a bit to really appreciate. Or at least more than I did in my teens!
Anyone got any other pop lyrics that have struck you by their wisdom years later?

It is a very sad song and very poignant

It’s a really old song by Joan Baez but it’s about an ex that calls her up every so often.

Diamonds and Rust. The whole thing is just a perfect description of how you feel when you hear a voice you used to know.

”well I’ll be damned, here comes your ghost again”

pop song wise tho. Invisible by Alison Moyet.

SisterAgatha · 28/06/2022 22:12

Also, Protection. Massive Attack.

I hated that song when it came out. Much too much is exactly correct! That being said, DP loves it and plays it a lot. The first time I told him he had no music sense. Now I realise it's a banger!

How about Ghost by the Indigo girls?
"Now the mississippi's mighty, but it starts in Minnesota, at a place that you can walk across with five steps down...."

Sob!

Luther Vandross - Dance with my father

Never got to me until it came on the radio while driving, when my father was having cancer treatment and the prognosis didn’t look great. I had to stop the car.

(Thankfully he recovered, but I still can’t listen to the song as one day it will be all too real)

Being Boring, Pet Shop Boys. God it makes me sad.

Bobby Jean by Bruce Springsteen😥

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 28/06/2022 22:22

Missing is an absolute BANGER of a tune. Need to go listen.

ItWorriesMeThisKindofThing · 28/06/2022 22:24

The “I wanna be the one to walk in the sun” line in Girls Just Wanna Have Fun is surprisingly moving

CamsPaisleyCuffs · 28/06/2022 22:27

Angels by Robbie Williams.

"When I'm feeling weak and my pain walks down a one way street" 😥

A friend of mine died of a brain tumour a few years ago, and her DH nursed her at home for a month or so ip
to her death. He chose “Stay With Me” by INXS for her funeral. A non-tradition choice, but absolutely right for them.

^Beautiful girl (stay with me)
Beautiful girl (stay with me)
She wants to go home^

Army Dreamers Kate Bush, lyrics move me to tears

Whereswallywonka · 28/06/2022 22:45

@SisterAgatha the ex who is the subject of that song is Bob Dylan! Beautiful song

vinoandbrie · 28/06/2022 22:45

I heard Scarlet’s ‘Independent Love Song’ the other day, and it brought me up short!

It wasn’t even one of my favourite songs back then, it just made me so nostalgic.

AlphaAlpha · 28/06/2022 22:45

Lying with my then newborn, a song that I'd never given much thought to came on the radio.
Listening to the lyrics, I felt such an immense rush of love and emotion - I'd never seen myself as maternal, let alone become a mother, and those few, softly sung words made me weep with joy.
Still do whenever I hear it.

Elbow - one day like this.

I know, I think of that when she sings “as I remember your eyes were bluer than robins eggs”.

He was a bit of a bastard to her I think. And don’t we all have that one arrogant ex who thinks we will welcome a phone call from them at midnight on a full moon 😂

“I’ve already paid”

ihearttc · 28/06/2022 22:56

Faith Hill-There you’ll be.

My son’s friend died 18 months ago. Now I can’t listen to it.

Seriously79 · 28/06/2022 22:56

Hallelujah by Alexandra Burke, I can't hear it without sobbing.

Was in labour for a week with DS, who was finally born in theatre weighing 10lbs, to say I was knackered and emotional would be an understatement.

Days later it was the X factor final, curled up with new baby, husband asleep on the sofa next to be and dog curled up at my feet, as Alexandra Burke launched into 'Halleujah' DS finally got his latch, the relief, the song, the pain, the emotions I just broke.

Even now nearly 14 years later, I still cry when I hear it.

Simply Red 'For your babies'
I gave birth to my first child with that playing on the radio!

Her faith is amazing
The pain that she goes through contained in the hope for you
Your whole world has changed
The years spent before seem more cloudy than blue

Said DD1 is now 30 and it STILL makes me well up!
