I noticed things going rotten before end of sell by too if started during the pandemic and I feel I am paying inflated prices for old or lower quality produce.

I have noticed this too. What the hell is going on.

I thought i was lucky enough to grab a few yellow stickered items 3 weeks ago, when i got them home I had to chuck most of them, fingers went through potatoes,( couldnt see through the bag), the bread was blue and dropping spores into the air, but only from the inside out, etc... had to grab them fast as the folks around that shelf were literally punching others out of the way to get them. we haven't had much to eat since because of this and I wont be risking that again. I don't know whats going on, but I can tell you how much of a sub rated citizen I feel for not even being good enough to deserve edible food

No cleaner (price increase)
no window cleaner (price increase)
no nails/pedicures/facials
check offers for supermarkets before leaving home, nectar have been very good to me recently
try to park as cheaply as possible whenever possible or walk
have cut back on cakes biscuits etc. Feel so much better for it.
no more coffee out
very little food wastage as freeze lots of leftovers and use on busy days.
bulk buy rice etc
sell anything and everything on eBay/Facebook marketplace
books are all bought from charity shops
no more magazines

refuse to give up:
buying clothes and skincare (good for my mental health)😆
gym-again great for MH
good quality skincare, rather use this than go for a facial.
travel
twice a year good quality cut and colour for my hair. My hairdressers is the best, she is honestly amazing.
I price check nearly everything. Takes 2 mins even while walking the aisles in SM.

How do you price check?
I recently found an app called Trolley and I was really impressed, but they are closing down.
Is there a particular website or app you'd recommend please?

My preferred instant coffee during work hours is now £7 (went up to £4.50 in January and I remember the surprise back then)
I can't be faffing about with the espresso machine and all that malarkey all day long and I tried all other alternatives but I don't like them. That's how I started using price comparison.

It takes so long to plan all this shopping, I'm fed up with it already, wasting so much time on it. I am trying though and hopefully it will get easier.

Lidl Danpac is just as good as Lurpac and just under half the price. I dont like Aldi Norpac as much. I stopped using Lurpac ages ago as they were always changing the price in different stores at different times.

Quicknamechangefortoday · 28/06/2022 15:19

Would anyone like a referral code for £15 off to spend at any major supermarket online, or any shop really for that matter? PM me if so and I’ll send you the link (I won’t put on here as I think it shares my name) x

Fernticket · 28/06/2022 17:32

For anyone looking to economise on skincare products, Aldi skincare is award winning and very pocket friendly.

LoisLane66 · 28/06/2022 18:09

I don't eat meat, fowl, shellfish or fish with the exception of cod nor do I drink alcohol so there's a huge saving. I have no pets - that's another tick, I sold my car and got a free hybrid bike with lights and hmet from a NextDoiand use my bus and rail cards, another tick, my electricity is on a low small business rate fixed last Feb until Oct 2024.

Meant to say the the person giving bike away had only bought it 3 months ago then moved abroad and didn't want to take it. Came with an unused rain cover too.

loopylindi · 28/06/2022 18:27

Yes. I bought mine from Lakeland some years ago. I only use it for 'not very dirty or stained things ' though. Not so good for blood stains and so on, but I suppose I could rub Vanish on the spots first.....I can also use this on a cooler wash - so it saves all round

loopylindi · 28/06/2022 18:28

Eco ball that is

CocktailNapkin · 28/06/2022 18:35

We like to get a Charlie Bingham's chicken tikka for any Indian cravings as its the right size for the two of us and no waste. Used to be around 7.50 last year at this time. Then I saw 8.50 was the norm back in March or so. Today I saw it (admittedly at Waitrose in Kensington) for 9.35!

Sainsbo's usually has them on offer once a month for 6.50, next time Ill get an extra and freeze it.

gracedentssketty · 28/06/2022 18:53

@CocktailNapkin we get the butter chicken which is amazing and buy a couple of naans. Great quality and better and cheaper than a takeaway. But now it’s rocketed to 9.61 where we are so we now only buy if we get one of the 4.50 my offers vouchers off with WR

Reigateforever · 28/06/2022 19:01

MibsXX When I bought yellow sticker food and found it was rotten I took it back. The shop was horrified and exchanged it for an in dated product. Please complain.

loopylindi thanks I want to stop using products to wash clothes with, my clothes don’t get filthy.

CocktailNapkin · 28/06/2022 19:03

@gracedentssketty Its getting perilously close to that 10 quid barrier. At that point you could split a butter chicken from the Indian down the street and pair it with a 99p bag-in-microwave basmati rice packet and it would be almost the same. I do like CB just because the spice and oiliness is more to our taste than a takeaway though.

I think the slightest shift in consumer patterns create massive profit margins. I think if u can get away with charging money for old rope. Its like how the size of things are shrinking . If we are all paying inflated prices for old veg thats only got a one or two day consumer shelf life thats massive profits. Your buying discount veg at inflated prices because during the pandemic they were shifting produce at lighting speed and u sell the old stock first. Also I have noticed yellow sticker items the supermarkets are reducing things into the next pound so its a reduction of 34 p or less for something that is use by that day. Also all security stickers on meat are yellow stickers was it always the case?
I think the quality of fresh produce in the chain supermarkets is unreliable now. Before I would have trusted the packaging for the sale by dates but not now

I work in Tesco and the product protection has gone through the roof as our losses are really high at the moment. The yellow stickers were always on some meat, maybe more so now. Health and beauty and non foods stuff like toys, and stuff do that in store and it’s constant

Not butter chicken but for a treat meal we really like the "best ever chicken tikka" from m and s. In a black circle packet. Think it's around £5 or was last time probably more now of course! Really rich and creamy, big enough for 2. We get microwave m and s pilau rice with it (60p) and usually have some frozen samaosa / bhaji in the freezer from Lidl/ Aldi so add that aswell.

kateandme · 28/06/2022 19:46

For those talking of takeaway.do u think of cooking from scratch?that's meant in non non no way judgey way!
It's just put big chicken thighs pack.nice stir in paste and yoghurt is way cheaper.stir some turmeric and cardamom when we have it on rice.way cheaper and lasts two daysalso naan from yoghurt and flour.
Again NOT judging.

Pluvia · 28/06/2022 19:48

I've stopped buying rocket and watercress from Sainsbury's and Tesco. The rocket has been washed but not rinsed and is half-rotten with days still to go on the use-by. The watercress has been badly damaged during the wash/ spin process and is rotting. I've also found weeds and grass in it. We're growing our own rocket and interesting salad leaves in the gardens (lambs lettuce and mizuna) and just buying a Romaine or Little Gem each week. I'm also growing all my own herbs, including coriander. I have a couple of large pots outside and sow a couple of seeds every week to keep it coming.

I don't think anyone has suggested they get takeaway every day. I think I'm a reasonably good home cook and cook from scratch most days, but that doesn't mean that I can cook the whole menu of every restaurant in town. It can also be quicker and easier (but clearly more expensive!) to get a takeaway.

My husband is always very disappointed with me when I come back with Danpack from lidl Grin anchor spreadable is quite nice and a fair bit cheaper than lurpack. It's in between the 2.

I actually prefer Country Life to Anchor and it's usually a fair bit cheaper than Lurpak or Anchor.

Only get melons as a treat now or when they’re on offer.

Oh yes I know.we can all do the fakeaway versions that just ARE NOT.
it was a genuine post for those saying tthey like the butter chicken or tikka dish.not the whole takeaway menu kind of thing.becuse I've found the home made version much nicer.i could never make the whole menu either.it was just an option I wanted to put out there because before I did it I'd be on the side of " but it won't be as good" and all though different it's my first requested meal from all.

gracedentssketty · 29/06/2022 06:31

Re cooking from scratch - yes we do do some (and prefer it) but we usually do this shop bought takeaway on a Friday when I don’t finish work until 6, and we have 2 DC under 4 so are just about ready to collapse.

im often in bed by 830 so doesn’t leave much time for cooking/eating/digesting/relaxing given DC don’t go down until 730 if we’re lucky
