We were already pretty frugal, but a couple of months ago we cancelled the TV license.

We don't have pet insurance, but this thread has made me reconsider.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 28/06/2022 11:31

@Rosscameasdoody

I bought a soda stream to try to cut down on bottled water - for expense and environmental reasons

What's wrong with just... um.. water? Out of the tap?

Tamrastarr · 28/06/2022 12:00

Belvoir cordial! I am now buying Tesco quadruple strength cordial which does 100 drinks!! It's pretty good!

Used to have a takeaway once a month haven't had one for ages
No spontaneous day trips in the car
Haven't bought myself clothes for over a year and teens have used there own money from birthdays etc I just cover the very basics.
Sunday lunch is no longer a big roast chicken it's usually something made with mince and I'm slowly getting sick of eating mince on repeat between the no meat days.

Coffeenoww · 28/06/2022 12:02

Haven't had heating on or used tumble dryer since March. Will almost certainly sell tumble dryer to be honest.

Loudhousefun · 28/06/2022 12:20

No cleaner (price increase)
no window cleaner (price increase)
no nails/pedicures/facials
check offers for supermarkets before leaving home, nectar have been very good to me recently
try to park as cheaply as possible whenever possible or walk
have cut back on cakes biscuits etc. Feel so much better for it.
no more coffee out
very little food wastage as freeze lots of leftovers and use on busy days.
bulk buy rice etc
sell anything and everything on eBay/Facebook marketplace
books are all bought from charity shops
no more magazines

refuse to give up:
buying clothes and skincare (good for my mental health)😆
gym-again great for MH
good quality skincare, rather use this than go for a facial.
travel
twice a year good quality cut and colour for my hair. My hairdressers is the best, she is honestly amazing.
I price check nearly everything. Takes 2 mins even while walking the aisles in SM.

I absolutely won’t cancel pet insurance, I’d rather eat beans on toast every night than leave my self open to a huge bill!

I have cancelled tv lic & stopped buying salmon & chicken.

FourTeaFallOut · 28/06/2022 12:43

Eating beans on toast every night is a decision you can make as an adult to balance your budget in favour of cutting pet insurance. It's unlikely to be the decision of those in financial distress with children to feed and keep warm this winter.

I don't have pets, fwiw. But this isn't going to be a theoretical question about priorities for some families and I don't think there's anything to gain by playing this weird game of how much shit would you personally endure to keep your pet insured other than the self satisfaction of getting a boot in.

PineappleWilson · 28/06/2022 12:45

We're reducing non-essential travel - days out etc. - because of petrol costs (just paid £72 to fill up our 1.2 ltr car) and admission charges. I've used our Tesco points at Easter to get entry to Sea Life so we don't currently have points to use to reduce entry fees. I'm using the library's e-magazine subscription to read magazines online rather than buy print copies.

We're also using a kitchen timer to reduce showers to 3 minutes and using timer plugs to run appliances overnight when it's cheaper (dishwasher, bread maker - washer won't work on a timer unfortunately).

We're also using an online shop again. Late evening it's £1.50 for delivery and means we don't get the kids trying to put extras in thr trolley and we don't wander over to clothes etc. we just get the food and essentials so it's a saving for us.

Next thing to go will be DS' swimming lessons (he's in the top level and can swim so it's more about him just finishing the last group now, really) and my weekly exercise class, leaving the kids' exercise groups (dance and martial arts plus little one learning to swim) until we really have to cut back.

I would think very carefully about giving up pet insurance. I know people who have spent thousands when their dogs have got ill or injured

I just would not spend it. PDSA or being put down. Sorry but I have to be realistic.

Crikeyalmighty · 28/06/2022 12:55

I'm not quite getting the obsession with butter on here. A block of M&S decent quality butter is £1.50 and lasts me weeks- but then I don't do baking and never have. If you mention Lurpak and same with any other non British brand - it's likely they are made in EU and hence increased costs applicable due to Brexit - same with lots of food and products that don't originate in the UK and it doesn't matter if they arent EU countries either- we had the benefit of EU trade deals before.

PineappleWilson · 28/06/2022 13:03

And we've turned down the spin speed on the washer, as we're line drying clothes for now so it's not as essential for them to be well spun.

CatsnCoffee · 28/06/2022 13:17

Pine nuts are about £1.50 in Aldi. Not a massive quantity, but enough for 2 or 3 meals.

Well ...

Sodastream uses water out of the tap.

It makes tap water fizzy, which might be preferable, on some occasions, for some people.

Not sure what is so difficult to understand about that Hmm

CaptainNelson · 28/06/2022 13:35

Re pet insurance - I can't change as our dog has a chronic condition, but the other week she ate something unidentifiable from a ditch which caused her to develop acute pancreatitis. £1600 vet bill, thankfully covered up front by PetPlan but I would have been absolutely stuffed without it. If you have a dog who'll eat anything, be careful!

LoisLane66 · 28/06/2022 13:38

@Crikeyalmighty .
You're quite wrong. M&S own brand butter is £1.85 I bought some today in one of their food halls and it's never been £1.50 for AT LEAST the past year. I shop there three times a week, every week, sometimes more often.
I have often wondered why butter had risen in price as the price of M&S Cornish gold milk has not risen from it's past 2 year price of £1.30.

LoisLane66 · 28/06/2022 13:41

Tesco butter us made in the UK with British milk, as is Waitrose butter so EU manufacturing and sourcing has nothing to do with it.

Quicknamechangefortoday · 28/06/2022 13:44

Ah loislane66 there you are! You never did answer anybody about those disgusting bullying comments you made on another thread. Why are you so horrible btw?

Crikeyalmighty · 28/06/2022 13:46

I bought it for £1.50 in M&S in Guildford on Saturday. Maybe it was on offer but that was what I paid. Even at £1.85 , I don't think it's outrageous.
I was talking about Lurpak though @LoisLane66 - which is an item people keep going on about- as far as im aware it's still made by Arla in Denmark - same I would think with President etc- they will be affected price wise if not originating in UK

LoisLane66 · 28/06/2022 14:19

Here's today's M&S e-receipt showing their brand of butter is £1.90, not the £1.50 another poster claimed.

What have you stopped buying due to a price increase?
LoisLane66 · 28/06/2022 14:23

Is wasn't on offer last week or on Sparks offers. I live just 14 miles outside Guildford and it's never been £1.50.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 28/06/2022 14:25

i buy lidl danpak
lurpak as a treat, if it has any offer at all
i avoid sainsbury/waitrose/tesco - too much temptation
stick to lidl and asda - basic shopping, and 10% off in Asda
try and eat what we have and not to waste vegetables.

Somethingneedstochange · 28/06/2022 14:31

We've got one it's great and so much quicker than having to wait for the oven to heat up. Last night I did meatballs in it while I did the sauce. Saved so much time. Does the best homemade wedges as well. I used my son's PIP to buy it. It's benefiting him.

Crikeyalmighty · 28/06/2022 14:33

@LoisLane66 well I may have been mistaken then , I'm not arguing about the price of butter- my point stands about brands like Lurpak though- if it's coming from out the UK- chances are it will cost more .

rookiemere · 28/06/2022 14:34

LoisLane66 · 28/06/2022 14:23

Different people get different Sparks offers.
Also even if it's 25p more from what another poster has said, the main point still remains.
