I thought i was lucky enough to grab a few yellow stickered items 3 weeks ago, when i got them home I had to chuck most of them, fingers went through potatoes,( couldnt see through the bag), the bread was blue and dropping spores into the air, but only from the inside out, etc... had to grab them fast as the folks around that shelf were literally punching others out of the way to get them. we haven't had much to eat since because of this and I wont be risking that again. I don't know whats going on, but I can tell you how much of a sub rated citizen I feel for not even being good enough to deserve edible food

That is humiliating been there and it pains me that your not eating much based on the experience.
Being tricked like that is not a reflection on your foraging skills or how u feed your household or what you are worthy of.
Food should be shared we have an abundance of over production we just have broken logic as to what humanity is.
Seeing the scramble or whites of people’s eyes or empty shelves it’s not somewhere we should be heading.
It’s all our collective failure because no one needs to go without when there is waste as in edible food being thrown away.
It’s important to give others the comfort and joy that food can bring we all know that . Sadly it’s Greed that we need to fight against because to have extra it has to be taken from someone else. They have to go without.
Whether it be fat profits or extreme self enrichment if that sits next to those going without food it’s blindly obvious . My mother always said the devil craps on the biggest heap.

On the Lurpak buttergates
I have frozen butter Lurpak as they still had the Christmas themed ones going months later 99p and it’s important to leave some for others .
Forget Celebrity Chefs and food with gold flakes on it. We need to see more caring and sharing and zero waste !

What have you stopped buying due to a price increase?
CocktailNapkin · 29/06/2022 07:44

Ive made butter chicken from scratch and it was good, but it made a lot. We eat maybe one day of leftovers on anything and its hard to freeze Indian food due to the cream content. We also don't eat it frequently enough to seek out recipes, so its faster/easier/cheaper to get something from the store we actually like and will finish completely.

Do you know they burn packets of crisps for fuel because its cheaper than selling them on. A market stall that sells food at fantastic prices don’t have the crisps anymore for this reason . It’s cheaper to burn them!

No ground coffee/Nespresso pods ….”

aldi pods for Nespresso machine and are far cheaper.
also tried their tinned mackerel the other day, the smoked fresh has rocketed. In a salad, it was lovely, 69p each tin.

Eating beans on toast every night is a decision you can make as an adult to balance your budget in favour of cutting pet insurance. It's unlikely to be the decision of those in financial distress with children to feed and keep warm this winter.

I don't have pets, fwiw. But this isn't going to be a theoretical question about priorities for some families and I don't think there's anything to gain by playing this weird game of how much shit would you personally endure to keep your pet insured other than the self satisfaction of getting a boot in.

Everyone is in a different situation. This is supposed to be a general thread about what people may have given up. There is no need to lay into someone because they love and prioritise their pets. The reverse of that would be someone saying " well you shouldn't have had so many/any children if you struggle to feed them". People may get some ideas from this thread. There is a positive side to it.

FourTeaFallOut · 29/06/2022 10:17

Yeah, it doesn't do any of that - try reading it again.

Re pet insurance - I can't change as our dog has a chronic condition, but the other week she ate something unidentifiable from a ditch which caused her to develop acute pancreatitis. £1600 vet bill, thankfully covered up front by PetPlan but I would have been absolutely stuffed without it. If you have a dog who'll eat anything, be careful!

That's an insane amount of money for a simple, if Acute illness with a well worn simple and what should be pretty cheap treatment path.

Out of interest, did you have to pay an excess or portion / percentage of the fee?

SkeletonFight · 29/06/2022 10:56

FourTeaFallOut · 29/06/2022 10:17

Yeah, it doesn't do any of that - try reading it again.

That must be your mindset then.

Crikeyalmighty · 29/06/2022 10:59

Think of your pet insurance as the pets version of the NHS. If you can't afford to protect then you have to think is it a good idea to have pets and in some cases multiple pets and I appreciate that's not fair on the less well off but as there isn't an NHS for your pets , you have to think about it or it's not fair either on the pet.

SkeletonFight · 29/06/2022 11:03

There is also the Blue Cross that I donate to monthly which helps people with vet bills who are on certain benefits.

Crikeyalmighty · 29/06/2022 12:41

@SkeletonFight Yes, that's a great cause.

antelopevalley · 29/06/2022 12:53

@Crikeyalmighty like lots of people I already have a pet. It would not benefit them to be surrendered to a rescue and put down because I might not be able to afford vet treatment in the future. My dog has a tricky personality. He never attacks and is not a danger to people, but he has separation anxiety and needs a lot of support. We have done a lot of work with him. At his age, he would never be adopted and would be put down.

OnNaturesCourse · 29/06/2022 14:34

I am in a position where I was already at almost breaking point so I dont have much room to make cut backs.

As a family of 4 (2 adults and 2 toddlers plus one cat) we already dont get professional haircuts - they are now all done by me in our kitchen. I only dye my hair for special occasions so maybe twice a year max. Our pet insurance is down to basic cover and we actually had to use the local PDSA hospital the other day to get treatment that was under our excess amount. I cant remember the last time we bought new clothes aside from essential things for the kids and we are lucky that a lot of our family buy the kids clothes randomly as gifts so that has helped. (it used to be a nice little extra outfit for them but now they are much more needed) We dont get our car washed anymore which used to get done every 3 or 4 months as we dont have means to do it ourselves (no drive) Our TV packages are all cancelled including NowTV etc. Gym memberships gone. Kids activities have been reduced to free classes or are paid for as birthday gifts by family (so paid out in blocks) I have have even superglued a few pairs of trainers lately as we cant afford to replace them just now. Our car barely moves now - and has gone from about 700 miles per month on average to below 400 miles. Ive started taking the bike and trailer if its just me and the children going anywhere, keeping my fingers crossed we dont need any repairs soon or we will be going no where. If our car wasnt on finance it would be getting sold to be honest.

We bring in about £2700 a month - and a year and half ago this was fine, we paid all the bills, debts, got the food, clothes and little treats, and still had money left over to save for a deposit. Now, we barely cover the bills and have to watch the food bill like a hawk and it a stress everytime - there is nothing left for savings or extra. The savings we did have are gone, eaten up by unexpected bills etc.

One thing we have been doing is using the ASDA app to great shopping lists - we make a shopping list of all the ingredients needed to make a certain meal so, for example, I have a shopping list for chicken curry, chicken and gravy, sausage and mash etc. I use the app to find the cheapest ingredients. The app then shows the lists as 'Chicken Curry' and the total price. The prices update in accordance with rises and deals so each week I can go onto the lists and pick the cheapest meals from what deals are on. I also have lists for essential cleaning products etc. I will then add everything to the online basket and remove things as needed to keep under our budget. Now, this is where I need to put effort in, I go into Aldi and/or Lidl and use the ASDA online basket as a list - if i find any items cheaper I buy them in store and once I am done I go to Asda and buy what remains in the online basket. Doing this allows me to not only stay on budget but under it as I know the maximum I will pay is what the ASDA online basket shows me, I then pick up as many items as possible in cheaper stores and only go to ASDA when needed. We budget £110 a week for food as we have dietary requirements in the house plus this includes nappies, wipes and toiletries. We absolutely can not go above this amount and will go without some weeks when we need to. When we are under budget I use this amount towards the debts we have that we are now struggling to pay because of the prices increases.

We use is Go Compare for local petrol prices, and also a family member has a COSTCO card so we use that petrol when we are in the area (its a few miles out from us)

We try to avoid branded anything - own labels are cheaper so kids clothes are supermarket or online, and ive even tried my hand at making some clothes out of old ones as I was gifted a sewing maching.

We cut family days out at theme parks etc for beach days, or garden game days, or have even found ourselves hopping on off peak public transport as the kids love just going on a bus, train, tram etc.

Weve cut back on mowing the lawn too, and it only gets done once a month which isnt great but its not too bad that the neighbors would raise eyebrows - our lawnmower is old and eats electricity.

We have cut the use of playstations and xboxes (big gamer house) to only at night, and only for a hour or so if we havent used too much electricity already that day. So if I've had to use the tumble dryer that day the PS most definitely isn't going on at night. We found the PS to be worse than the xbox for some reason.

All our lights and sockets are controlled by our smart hub so literally the whole house gets switched off when we leave or are in bed. Our electric stand by usage is less than 0.01p per hour and that is for the fridge and freezer.

Another thing - it isnt a cut but a good idea i found - is Ive started rotating the kids toys so a vast majority of them are stored in the attic and they have a few favourites down to play with. Once a month or so (whenever they start complaining 'im bored, theres nothing to do!') I will pack up the toys and they can pick from the toys in the attic to come down. At their ages its like getting new toys every month.

Im exhausted with it all. Every day is constant struggle to keep our heads above water, and its on my mind with everything we do.

Crikeyalmighty · 29/06/2022 14:48

@antelopevalley yes I do get that too. I'm sorry if it sounded unsympathetic as anyones situation can change I know- I just struggle to understand those who seem to have 3 or 4 pets but then add new ones- even when they can't cover them and struggle personally themselves. Like the lady on here who is looking at homelessness because she's struggling to find a rental that will allow her multiple pets.I actually love cats and dogs but guess I value self preservation more.

I’ve stopped buying full price meat and fish and now only buy short date, reduced meat.
I've always done this. At least half of the meat I buy is 50% off or better. My local coop is great for this and I regularly find whole chickens for under £2, salmon or prawns for around £1, local butcher bacon 75p etc.
I also discovered our local farm shop has a 50% off freezer full of meat so I've got some great quality stuff cheaper than the supermarket equivalent.
We got a second hand freezer for free to put it all in, in addition to our usual fridge freezer which houses the frozen veg, chips, ice cream etc.

Who are "they" who burn crisps for fuel? You can't just put crisps in a coal power station or a petrol generator or a car and burn them. Sounds like an urban myth to me...

Have you looked into whether you can hand your car back @OnNaturesCourse? According to my finance agreement I can hand it back with no penalty once I've paid back a certain amount. Would you be able to sell the car and clear the finance? Used car prices are ridiculously high right now due to the shortage of new cars.

OnNaturesCourse · 29/06/2022 16:20

It's less than a year old so unfortunately not.

Re cooking from scratch - yes we do do some (and prefer it) but we usually do this shop bought takeaway on a Friday when I don’t finish work until 6, and we have 2 DC under 4 so are just about ready to collapse.

im often in bed by 830 so doesn’t leave much time for cooking/eating/digesting/relaxing given DC don’t go down until 730 if we’re lucky

I totally get that.when we have days like that we try to no exactly what needs to be done.so the meal would have to be marinating in the fridge to bring in the oven if from scratch.
Nothing wrong with Friday cereal supper or eggs and beans either!

I'd def recommend people looking on Freecycle sites.i think they've become alot more (idiotic) in the last few years with people taking the piss. But there still can be some real genuine finds.
And so to find a fridge or freezer might be an idea for some folk.we got our completely free.the lady just wanted it gone and it was an old style so she said if u can fetch it you can have it.

DockOTheBay · 29/06/2022 17:12

There are lots of local free sites out there - free cycle or dedicated Facebook groups. There are also larger groups offering things for postage costs only.

Those cancelling pet insurance please think what you will do if your pet becomes ill. Many Pets offer a insurance which covers existing illnesses and they are a good company or alternatively you can downgrade your insurance to a yearly policy which although not as good at least you will have some cover, in an emergency situation a vet bill can get to 5-10K really fast

@MrsSkylerWhite

Re. The Aldi pods … I used to get those, but one of my clients gave me her nearly new Nespresso machine and loads of pods because she didn’t use it. Brilliant! A nice machine for me, my sister was delighted with my old one. What I’d nor considered is that it takes the Vertuo pods, which are a different shape/barcoded and you can only get from Nespresso! Ah well …

i bought some of their tinned mackerel last week - you’re absolutely right, very nice!
