@Genehuntsfanclub if you have a freezer sometimes there is a whole salmon cheap. Needs de boning and slicing but works out much less. Morrisons

I’ve started doing my big shop in lidls , I’ve saved loads I don’t think I’ll ever go back even if I won the lottery !

BalloonsAndWhistles · 28/06/2022 06:30

Steak 😢 Normally have it as a nice payday treat with all the trimmings but we’re eating up the cupboard/freezer so not this month. Plus Charlie Bingham ready meals. Bloody love them too. The price had already gone up by about 10% but with everything else, it’s a no 😢

You’re not wrong about profiteering! The price jumps of some products percentage wise are not justifiable.

Totally agree. It’s like these companies haven’t got a brain cell between them! At a time when people have got far less money and are cutting back as it is, why is NOW the best time to put prices up 33%? I mean people literally don’t have 33% extra so won’t buy it, ridiculous 🤷‍♀️

LaFloristaCalista · 28/06/2022 07:15

I've cancelled the gym and stopped buying Italian prosciutto - just having standard British ham instead.

I've also stopped buying wine, fresh fish, olives and other expensive fancy foods Sad

Re. pet insurance - I currently only have 3rd party (via Dogs Trust), and put money away each month … there’s a reasonable amount saved, but definitely not enough for anything really major/ongoing.

So rather than continuing saving, I’m now going to insure them both. I’ve asked in The Doghouse, but does anyone here have any personal experience of Petwise? They offer insurance for older dogs (7+), and the quote I’ve had for my nearly 10yo Irish Terrier seems almost too good: Lifetime £8k cover which includes dental, £249 excess, no co-payment on claims, for £28.52 per month. I appreciate that the premium will no doubt increase (possibly a lot) as she gets older, but the cover really does seem excellent?

You can make butter without using a whisk, just use your fingers. I've seen it done on YouTube by various people and it takes only a very few minutes. Atomic Shrimp (Mike) made one video I watched
I used a muslin cloth (which came with a Superdrug version of Liz Earle's hot cloth cleanser) to squeeze out the buttermilk before washing the clump of butter several times in cold water, otherwise it quickly goes 'off'. The buttermilk left from squeezing the butter clumps, can be used in making light as air scones or pancakes.

UndertheCedartree · 28/06/2022 08:09

I'm so surprised people are cutting out per insurance. I wouldn't dare stop paying that as there's no way I could afford large vet bills.

UndertheCedartree · 28/06/2022 08:10

Should say pet insurance

LoisLane66 · 28/06/2022 08:17

@EntertainingandFactual.
The 'trimmings' with your roast probably cost about £1.50 tops so you're paying through the nose for the meat.
I would never eat out nowadays. It pains me to pay £3+ for a thin slice of 'homemade' cake plus £2.75 for a cup of coffee which is 2/3 crèma or a pot of water containing one tea bag.

wildchild554 · 28/06/2022 08:39

Started handwashing again as much as possible, usually do 3 loads a day, got it down to 2-3 loads a week on one day, same with using hoover etc, which is our main electric usage day as beats the higher price in the first 2kwh saves about 50p a day overall, as much of the cleaning done without appliance as poss. Have set one day for batch cooking and baking, cooking lots of different things at once, this week have also done 5 days of hard-boiled eggs to make egg mayo sandwiches for dinner, luckily kids on free school dinners, I'm skipping lunch when they are in school or having slice of bread which again I bake myself as I cheaper due to allergies, won't have heating this year, only treats we have is what I can bake in the batch cook, not looking forward to the cold this year, have arthritis and makes it a lot more painful but will wrap up plus severe asthma which is a concern as really need to keep warm. Am pretty much only shopping at anti-food waste market for everything that can't get elsewhere, growing as much as I can, eating even less meat. Have stopped going to A-team with the kids as can longer afford it which is a shame as made a huge difference to my sons. I don't think there is much else I can think of to cut back on but am still racking my brain to figure out how to save.

rookiemere · 28/06/2022 08:45

I don't quite understand the cost savings by making butter.
A block of Tescos own brand butter is £1.75, 300 mls of whipping cream is £1.20, it doesn't seem worth it unless you go through loads of butter.

GussyPalore · 28/06/2022 08:46

I agree. It cost us more than the annual payment to have our cat put to sleep and cremated recently.

Ineke · 28/06/2022 09:16

Pet insurance, butter, dog grooming(do it myself) subscriptions, hairdresser(used to go once a year) branded washing powder and cleaning stuff, new clothes, (only shop in charity shops) .
Find new ways of making pennies such as renting my drive to a Parking Website. Signing up to Universal Extras. Cheaper to buy ready made Pesto than make your own. Yellow Label shop Shop at M&S for food savings.

BIWI · 28/06/2022 09:23

I'm a bit Hmm at the accusations of profiteering.

If you've been reading the papers/watching the news recently you'll see this is a perfect storm of Brexit, Covid and now the Ukraine war, meaning that supplies of basic ingredients or importing stuff is costing a huge amount more - plus the fuel to transport things to the UK is costing much more as well.

All the supermarkets are doing what they can to stop prices going up, but much of this is out of their hands.

Example here, about Asda

and Sainsbury's

And yellow stickered products are not (intentionally!) mouldy or rancid @Darlingx! They're products that have reached the final day of their 'use by' date. (And yes, some products' security stickers have always been yellow)

yourestandingonmyneck · 28/06/2022 09:34

@worriedaboutmoney2022 why don't you and that friend agree to swap a gift that you've each bought for your own kids? As in one of the gifts you've bought for your kids, give it to them to wrap and hand over, and vice versa.

That way you're not spending any extra money, you are getting your kid something you know they want, but the kids all get the thrill of getting a gift from friends XxX

milliemooismyniece · 28/06/2022 10:02

My Mum used to buy 2 newspapers a day, then between us we had 3 on Saturdays/Sundays. She has cut down to just one a day and the Sundays have gone completely, saving a staggering £12 a week.

Iloveartichokes · 28/06/2022 10:09

I buy more and more in Iceland, having loaded my bonus card to receive a 5% discount. Those over 60 receive an additional 10% reduction when they shop on Tuesdays if it’s any help. Deliveries are free over a certain amount spent.

Pet insurance. 😞

I would think very carefully about giving up pet insurance. I know people who have spent thousands when their dogs have got ill or injured

If their costs are rising they don't have an option.
Well the do but not making a profit is a short cut to closing down.

Fuel, chilling, transport, storage, retail, staff, raw material prices have all increased.

They might be content selling less but making the same money ( not being "busy fools" as my boss used to call it - it's far easier to make £1 on one item than 1p on 100 items)

If they're selling less their fixed costs will be shared by less products so will be a larger amount on each item

Fairy liquid -back to own brand

pine nuts £1.49 in aldi today. Smaller bag but still much cheaper

Do you not find giving up Fairy Liquid to be false economy ? I did the same thing when the price shot up and found that I was using a lot more of the cheaper brands and actually spending more. I switched back and now buy in giant containers from Amazon, which works out cheaper than the supermarket.

I bought a soda stream to try to cut down on bottled water - for expense and environmental reasons. It’s much cheaper, especially if you use the cylinder exchange scheme, and more environmentally friendly as the bottles are glass and endlessly re-usable so no more plastic bottles in the bin.
