It’s paying off having a Tesco card - saved 25% on my shop today with all the offers, eg Oreos 60p instead of £1, honey £2 instead of £3, coconut water 2 for £5 instead of 7. I’m no longer buying organic milk or Cravendale (the latter used to be 3 quid for 2 bottles, and is now £4!).

I stopped buying branded Weetabix before the price hikes, and buy the Tesco cheap branded Stockwell ones - 24 weetabix for 75p or Aldi ones. Can’t tell the difference, and nutritionally very similar.

Something I could make a saving on is shampoo and conditioner.

Can anyone recommend a shampoo and conditioner thats cheap but rehydrates your hair, the one I used to use is a ridiculous price but I am wary of the other ones as I used a cheaper (£1) shampoo recently and it made my hair looked like a wizards toothbrush when it dried. I like it to look glossy and sleek. Any recommendations appreciated.

Solid shampoo from Cosy cottage Soap, lasts for ages, and I don't need conditioner with it, my hair has never been in such good condition. £3.95 per bar which lasts me about 6 weeks ish if not longer.

Batch cooking more vegetarian meals. One butternut squash makes a lot of curry, with chickpeas for protein.
Also, counter intuitive, have cheap frozen pizza for when I fancy a drink. Avoids the too easy Just Eat deliveries. So a planned junk food and booze weekend.

Oh and taking packed lunch to work. I walk through M&S on my way to work and I was spending a fortune on my lunch. I think it’s the mindless spending that’s gone which is not a bad thing surely.

We have a high income now but have lived in poverty due to illness so tend not to waste much.

My husband walks to work. I wfh or use advance tickets or off peak.

We buy 500g of butter £3.40 Sainsbury and cut it in half (insulated butter dish avoids tubs, lakeland or charity shop). Dairy farmers granddaughter so I hate spread. British too.

Yellow labels into the freezer as and when.

Charity shop or fleebay for clothes or luxury goods. Children do this too!

Cars driven to the end. Learn how to check oil and water.

Dog insurance Puffin £12 per month.

Pay as you go phones, Magpie when updated.

We don't really eat out as I cook well.

Beauty is my profession so it is mates rates but note the following :

Colleges offer cheap haircuts
Ditto beauty services
Revolution cosmetics are made by the same factories as 'top brands'
Aldi face cream is as good as a Clarins
Manucurist kits will give you a salon type finish you can take off with normal remover
Aldi shampoo is as good as Aussie for my curly haired DD
Maybeline blush stick (£4) lasted me two years.
Boots pink face wipes are the best. 3 for two usually.

I’m thinking I’ll cancel our tv license. There’s nothing I want to watch on iPlayer and we don’t watch live tv (just Netflix and Prime). That’s enough of a saving to cover our butter consumption 😂

I haven't changed any food shopping yet. I think the petrol price is my biggest irritant at the moment, so I’m going to stop some of DC’s activities that are 30 mins drive each way and stay closer to home.

Also, I’m sure I’ve got some magazine subscriptions to cancel.

I’ve stopped going to my favourite cafe each week. It used to cost £6.40 for a latte and a sandwich. Now it’s £9.60, which seems excessive.

Bigblackandreddog · 26/06/2022 21:33

I’ve been online shopping so I can’t buy any extras.

Im also trying to use the car less. It recently cost me close to £2k to keep on the road but I couldnt afford to replace it if I scrapped it (because for £2k you can barely buy a thing at the moment!)
Wishing I could sell it for a cheaper more economical one but it’s value has dropped through the floor 🙁 who would buy a large 4x4 when diesel is £2 a litre…

My pet insurance has gone up to an eye watering £160 per month. That’s a massive concern and I don’t think it’s worth it any more. I’ve stopped going to training classes as they were costing quite a bit plus diesel.

We've also given up days out and takeaways, we usually got one per week. Not sure I’ve saved that much but every little bit helps.

AlviarinAesSedai · 26/06/2022 21:33

The essential grated and sliced cheese in ALDI is same price as block or only a couple of pence dearer. My DD and DH use less if pre sliced etc, portion control.
I’m not using car as much and trying to use drive home past supermarket for my top up shop.

Per plan and pet insurance although even that's a drop in the ocean sadly.

I think life insurances will go next 😢

@Girliefriendlikespuppies , find out if you can take a premium holiday before you cancel entirely. A lot of insurers will let you do that (you may or may not be covered while you're on a payment holiday, though).

Boots biodegrade baby wipes do a great job at removing makeup. 79p each and often 3 for £2.

Moving DD to the preschool attached to DS's school from September as significantly cheaper than the private day nursery she currently attends plus can walk there instead of taking the car.

Feeling quite sad about DD leaving the nurseryas we have been with them since DS was a baby so 6 years (although the preschool seem lovely and very caring) but I worked out that even with having to cover school holidays with holiday club it was still coming out £6k a year cheaper.

Charlie Bighams meals - Used to be my favourite Friday night meal but I can’t justify the cost now.

I often find these reduced by over 50% on yellow stickers at my local Tesco.

QuebecBagnet · 26/06/2022 16:49

That’s a genius idea, do you just add some boiling water?

Tesco no longer sells dried skimmed milk.
Horrible in hot drinks but great if you make up a pint with cold water and refrigerate. Much better than plastic tasting UHT.
Think Asda still has it.

makingmiracles · 26/06/2022 21:52

Using the drier less, putting as much as possible on the airier or on hangers on the shower curtain rail with the extracted fan on.

changed cars so now petrol consumption is down massively, from around £50 a week to about £30 and £0 tax.

already using basic versions and non branded for most things anyway so not a lot to cut there, although everybody may be forced to eat toast for bf soon given how expensive cereal is getting, Weve tried numerous own brand versions but they taste quite different and not all that pleasant.

changed jobs on higher pay and now get to fill the freezer with free meals (CBs) Wink

moved from fairy pods at £7ish to £1.90 bottle of Tesco own detergent for clothes.

Alcohol, tobacco and and subscriptions will be the next to go tbh.

Marmite17 · 26/06/2022 21:59

Will check out B and M. Milk in most likely thing for me to run out of. Decreased temp on fridge and it still goes off. As did chicken, before adjusted temp, an expensive thing to throw out.

Reading about people cancelling pet insurance makes me wince. If you think the monthly cost is a lot, what would you do about a sudden huge vet bill? A friend's cat injured his leg and just the emergency vets and overnight care (it was at a weekend) came to over £6,000! Pets also live much longer these days and that also comes with many health issues associated with old age - but it will be too late to get insurance at that point.

@fernz

i really couldn’t pay that for a cat. I would have to ask the vet to put to sleep

skybluee · 26/06/2022 22:17

LuckySantangelo35 · 26/06/2022 15:13

@skybluee

What exactly DO you spend money on ??

I agree you can’t make any cuts to your spending if you’re not actually spending anything

Bills
Food
Toiletries (although that's not every month).

Marmite17 · 26/06/2022 22:18

Had 2 cats and could afford random vet bills at the time. Now I wouldn't go without pet insurance.
Saves a lot of heart break.

kedavra · 26/06/2022 22:36

Another one who has cancelled pet insurance here, and switched to a cheaper food we can buy in bulk.
The junior is cutting ds hair at the barbers for half the usual cost.
No manicures or pedicures. My roots are lasting a few more weeks before being coloured.
Subscriptions we won't miss have been cancelled.
Tumble dryer unplugged and smart plugs added so things aren't left on.
The lunch cafe trips at DHs work have stopped, everyone now brings food and drinks in.
I'm not using my car as much, last time it was £120 to fill up.
DDS tortoise was having fresh organic food posted out weekly. I've bought a raised planter and she's now growing her own.

TimeAfterTime1 · 26/06/2022 22:42

If the Lurpak 500g for over a fiver are the ones with Rapeseed Oil blended in, then Amazon Fresh are selling for just over £3, saving 25%. Other savings to be made include Warburtons Farmhouse loaf - 2 for £2. 👍🏿😊

123Callie · 26/06/2022 23:08

When pets get ill and need expensive treatments we are going to see more people choosing to put to sleep, which was happened in the past. Many vets feel this is often a more ethical choice anyway.

antelopevalley · 26/06/2022 23:14

Some people do put pets through unnecessary treatment.

Mondaymanic · 26/06/2022 23:17

I'm horrified by the amount of people saying they'd put their pets to sleep. Absolutely awful. :(

antelopevalley · 26/06/2022 23:18

@Mondaymanic what do you suggest people do? I would pay for cheaper treatment like antibiotics. But I would not get into £10,000 debt.

Mondaymanic · 26/06/2022 23:19

Oh and to answer the question, I've stopped buying branded food, only buying clothes, makeup, toiletries etc that I need and buying cheaper versions e.g. Lancome splurges are a thing of the past. Collection, revolution makeup etc are still pretty nice, feel like a treat and a lot cheaper.
