Re cancelling pet insurance - to those who are saying they wouldn't choose expensive or invasive treatments for an older pet that's a valid choice, assuming you are prepared to PTS if/when necessary for the pet's welfare. If you cancel insurance for a younger pet and do not have another means of payment the problem is you may be forced into the same situation for economic reasons. Choosing to PTS because of money can be especially heartbreaking so it's worth thinking very hard about what you would do if various situations arose (eg expensive surgery, lifelong medications and monitoring) prior to cancelling. It can't be assumed that charities, crowd funding or practice payment plans will pick up the bill. Again, self-insuring is a valid choice but often not viable for those who are struggling to pay insurance premiums.

@JuneJubilee in terms of recording programmes, I use a Freeview box with that facility. I can record any of the Freeview channels. Mine is a box made by BT called youview. I can watch all the UK catchup players through it as well and if I subscribe to any others - eg if I buy three months of nowtv or Netflix etc - I can get those through it directly too.

@GodneySaysWorkBitch

thank you! I'll definitely look into that!

I am really concerned about the amount of people saying they will cancel their pet insurance. Our dog has had cancer twice in the last two years and sadly it has returned. It has, so far cost us £5000, we have had to use savings and family have helped out. I really wish we had gone for the insurance when he was a puppy.
Luckily we have been able to fall back on our savings but the thought of being faced with the only option but to put our beloved dog to sleep because we didn’t have that cushion is something I can not comprehend.
I really worry that many pets will be pts unnecessarily because so many owners have had to cancel the insurance and can not afford the high vet bills.
I would have to give up many, many other things before I would do that.

Charlie Bighams meals - Used to be my favourite Friday night meal but I can’t justify the cost now.

Totally avoid brands, unless they are on special. Heinz beans, 4 cans for£3.70. M&S own brand 35p a tin…..

Agree about M&S baked beans- truly a revelation!

I second Charlie Bighams - their steak pies used to be delicious but price has gone up and half the steak replaced by carrot!

If people have been buying Lurpak - no c! - for ever, and must have seen the name hundreds of times, why can’t they spell it?

They can’t all be dyslexic!
And while I’m on Lurpak, why do people prefer to support Danish farmers, rather than our own?

I know it’s not for everybody, but I switched from tampons/disposable sanitary towels to a mooncup a few years ago. It’s saved me an absolute fortune and is better for the environment too.

I did that too but not for money reasons. I still wear pads on heavy days (1 single pad per day) but I use far less pads. I buy my pads in Germany where it is cheaper, and I haven't come close to using them up due to the mooncup.

I haven't cut back on anything, but I am more conscious of bringing my lunch to work. I am dyeing my hair at home instead of going to the salon. Bought a brow trimmer thing from amazon so that I do my brows at home.

Tesco had the individual meals on offer I saw yesterday, the lasagne is amazing but about 10,000 kcals so I avoid now. The Thai green curry is also very good. I’d say the taste and quality is justifiable as an occasional treat though, still much cheaper than eating out…

thegcatsmother · 26/06/2022 20:32

JinglingHellsBells I buy sliced cheese (Gouda and Maasdam) as ds likes it in his packed lunch. As he pays housekeeping to me, I am happy to buy it. We both like a kitkat with our lunch, and we both take an apple and a banana. As ds is 26, he can choose to eat chocolate; so can I at 56.

There is less overuse of cheese if sliced is used imo. Ds doesn't do fine slices from a block of cheddar, but thick wedges. The sliced cheese therefore lasts longer, and I am not left looking for the cheddar.

CocktailNapkin · 26/06/2022 20:34

We've gone a bit in the opposite direction in shopping for quality over quantity. The veg was getting so terrible in the shops and we were wasting so much - a weekly veg box means I damn well eat all the veg and plan meals around the contents. Its fresher, tastes a lot better and probably comes out to close to the same price at this point.

Same with meat - we may buy it once a week but it will be a good quality piece of meat, fish, or chicken which tastes of something. Good meat with good quality sides and you can stretch it from 2 meals to 3.

In exchange for spending a bit more on food ingredients, we have completely cut eating out OR ordering in - no more last minute Deliveroos, etc. The quality was too poor to justify the cost and I could usually make something quicker anyway.

Ill be putting in some herbs, mixed salad leaves, radishes, carrots, and potatoes in containers next weekend.

A recent gallbladder issue has saved us plenty of money as I now avoid cheese and cheese-heavy meals. We've also cut out crisps and store bought treats - nuts/veg to eat and I keep the freezer stocked with homemade cookies or brownies - hard to over eat if frozen and last longer.

Always checking the cupboards and thinking of new ways to use things lurking in the shadows, usually in combination with fridge lurkers. I've got a bag of oats I bought for some reason and no one likes oatmeal in this house. Ill whiz it up in the food processor to make oat flour for pancakes, muffins, etc.

We do not have Netflix, tv license, work commutes, a car, gym memberships, tumble dryer, or drink much alcohol. I like to get a takeaway coffee as a treat once or twice a week. After a recent search for summer/holiday clothes turned up a ton of new/practically new clothes stored in various suitcases, there will be no clothes buying unless absolutely necessary.

I need to get pet insurance for our two older cats. We also need to get better about popping out to pick up one or two things because its amazing how buying some milk can turn into a 10 quid shop!

A few people have said that construction is a good indicator of recession.

The big construction companies share prices are down as well.

Probably alcohol. It is not an essential. A glass of fresh orange is just as nice at the end of the day.

@User48751490

its so not!

Cantanka · 26/06/2022 20:40

We have decided not to have another baby, which we had been due to try for this autumn. We are not low earners, but with things the way they are we simply cannot afford it, and given my age I don’t expect we will be able to revisit this decision if and when the cost of living becomes more manageable.

thing is though a lot of people who are cancelling their pet insurance will already have done just that, cut back on many, many things…

what are they supposed to do??

AnnieSnap · 26/06/2022 20:44

Gingerkittykat · 26/06/2022 17:47

Please don't cancel your pet insurance.
My 12 year old cat has had chronic diarrhoea for the past couple of months and it has cost a fortune.
£40 for first visit and £28 for follow ups (I think he has had 6 visits).
At least £100 worth of meds.
£90 for a blood test.
£140 to get his poo analysed.

So about £600 of costs and the excess was £100 with probably more costs to come.

Suddenly the £10 a month insurance doesn't seem so expensive (animal friends).

I am thinking of swapping my 2 year old ragdoll from PetPlan to a cheaper insurer, she has never been ill so nothing will be excluded and her premium has gone up a lot this year.

Surely at aged 12, you would have spent far more than that in insurance premiums over the years though?

Shufflebumnessie · 26/06/2022 20:45

Netflix.
Walking as much as possible rather than using the car.

10 Birds Eye cod fish fingers £3.50 !!! I’ve stopped buying them.

do an online shop and choose the cheapies; practically guarantee they will be substituted for the over priced birds eyes that noone is buying....😉

Fair enough, it's not for everyone, but I don't care much for alcohol anyway so don't mind having the occasional glass of cranberry or orange juice. It's a treat.

That's true @HydraWater and it's something I actually wonder about a lot

I work in central London, so every day I read about the cost of living crisis and then I go into work and the expensive shops and restaurants and theatres and everything else are full to bursting.

It's like parallel worlds. A lot of people don't seem to be much affected at all. I don't really understand it.

I go

I agree with this. My cat got to 11 and we'd hardly had to spend a penny on vets bills. Since then he's become a bit of a regular visitor - bone infection, broken jaw and loss of 12 teeth, damaged leg, early kidney disease, two more dentals, kidney stones and an incompetent vet diagnosing him with heart failure when he had a grade 1 murmur. The bills have run into thousands but there's nothing there that I'd have been prepared to have him put to sleep for.

I go

Sorry posted too soon. I haven't stopped going to restaurants (DH just booked for 4 of us including MIL to go to salt room in brighton which will probably cost £100 for all of us) but we also shop at Aldi/Lidl far more, take packed lunches to work and stopped going to Waitrose. We just have to weigh up what luxuries we want to keep. For example, no holiday this summer (as we have already been back to my home country twice this year for family reasons) so we will treat ourselves to restaurants and weekend breaks.

I think a lot of people are doing the same.
