@worriedaboutmoney2022
I would recommend that the Tony Carvery box for £3 is amazing.

Tony Cavery you say? I think I'll give that one a miss! Grin

I'm buying fewer whole chickens. I buy organic or free range and get a few meals out of them but I don't buy them as often now. Biscuits too as there are fewer offers. I know this is healthier but having biscuits in the cupboard seems so normal. I'm trying to buy whichever block butters are on best offer.

One thing I can't cut are my driving lessons as I am getting closer to being test ready, it would be a massive waste. But I could really do with not having to spend over £70 a week.

@Floydthebarber

I agree passing your test is important & wise to do as you're almost ready. I'm taking (one of) my God daughters out as much as possible so she can practise, she really doesn't need any more lessons, just practice. Between her mum & I she's doing well.

can you get anyone to take you & cut down/out the lessons? My GOD DAUGHTER is going to have two the week before her test, but none from now until then.

These posts have all, (I think), been about the rising costs of things that people have previously afforded, but now have to cut back on, or do without altogether.
Something more insidious is happening too, which is reported on from time to time, and not always as straightforward to spot, and that is grocery items being made deliberately smaller, but the price stays the same!
It’s referred to as ”shrinkflation”, for example a bar of chocolate going from 150g to 120g.
Very sneaky, but just as widespread as rising prices

Asda pork sausages have gone from 20 to 16, Seabrooks crisps have gone from 6 to 5...... seeing it a lot

Yep pine nuts can fuck off. I'll learn to live without them. Considering pet insurance because £80 a month is just obscene now when every time I have to attend the vet I have to pay anyway.

@risetodaysun I don't know if you've read the thread or not, but lots of suggestions for pet insurance. I know it's a huge amount every month & seems like you don't get much for it! But it's invaluable when something major goes wrong & vet bills are just going to keep going up & up😳🥹

GodneySaysWorkBitch · 26/06/2022 18:53

@JuneJubilee in terms of recording programmes, I use a Freeview box with that facility. I can record any of the Freeview channels. Mine is a box made by BT called youview. I can watch all the UK catchup players through it as well and if I subscribe to any others - eg if I buy three months of nowtv or Netflix etc - I can get those through it directly too.

Anotherselfemployedcleaner · 26/06/2022 18:55

@LindyLou2020

That’s absolutely right, and why you have to check the price per kg/litre etc. all the time. I wish that at Tesco, for example, they would also show the clubcard price in that format, so that you could easily see if it was actually a good deal compared to other similar products not on offer. And also show the cost/weight price for everything, not per bar. IYSWIM?

Crocsandshocks · 26/06/2022 18:57

We've also gone from lurpack to nordpack. It's not as nice though 😐

Driving lessons (not sure if this counts?)

Just can't bloody afford it.

@Peppapig7262662

How close to passing are you?

maybe look at spacing a few out before your test & find someone who will let you practice in their car. Try not to waste the money you've already spent if you can.

We don't have a TV licence now and also no TV subscription to Virgin. We just were not watching any live TV. We use Amazon and Disney plus to watch different series or films. Saved a lot of money.

Andifin · 26/06/2022 19:03

Just doing a little bit of reading on the back of our disgust at the price of lurpak.
My pack of lurpak is made in Denmark.

From Google.
‘Danish workers are amongst the highest paid in the world’.
‘Danes have on average a 9% pay rise every 15 months’.
Add that to import charges, increases and delays due to Brexit and fuel prices then Danish products are likely to be high.

I suppose we should be careful what we wish for when we ask for pay rises!

MyneighbourisTotoro · 26/06/2022 19:05

We don’t live a life of luxury to start with so I’ve cut out buying a pack of biscuits, gluten free crisps and chocolate, that only saves about £5 a week but it helps.
I’ve been skipping meals to make sure our food lasts long enough until the next shop, as long as the kids are fed then that’s all that matters!

Dont see the problem myself.

Unless many MNs dont tell the truth!

Aldi Sumatra ground coffee is really good at 2.5, the best I have had.

We buy gigantic bags of coffee beans from Lidl and grind as and when we need.

Yes, I am now on dh's insurance and am going to start practicing this way. Still want weekly lessons for a bit longer but then might drop to two weeks, none then some refresher courses from my instructor.

I hope that it is going to be worth it in the end but it is a massive amount of money each month.

Orangesandlemons77 · 26/06/2022 14:26

I have been saving £80 a month using £20 off online Waitrose codes and filling my online basket with mainly Essentials products, finding them good quality and saving quite a bit

Got our shopping for 4 (2 adults and 2 teens) down to just over £80 a week doing this. On top of this I buy milk and bread from the shop nearby.

We feed 7 people on between £80 and £100 per week, and this is without scrimping much.

Waitrose prices are crazy, for most people.

  • in the absence of garden - growing herbs, tomatoes, strawberries, avocadoes on windowsill in tin cans (from beans, coconut milk etc). Camomile and mint make calming tea. So do ground dried citrus and avocado peel.

  • Ground roasted dandelion roots and acorns taste like coffee. Go forage!

  • Handmade gifts (so far no complaints)

Watto1 · 26/06/2022 19:15

I know it’s not for everybody, but I switched from tampons/disposable sanitary towels to a mooncup a few years ago. It’s saved me an absolute fortune and is better for the environment too.

My husband is always very disappointed with me when I come back with Danpack from lidl Grin anchor spreadable is quite nice and a fair bit cheaper than lurpack. It's in between the 2.

RestingPandaFace · 26/06/2022 17:03

Oh and the milkman - it’s gone up to 89p a pint 😳

So sad that our local milk company had to cease trading due to price rises. It's much cheaper for us to buy from the supermarkets now though.

Diamondsareforever123 · 26/06/2022 19:26

Now shopping at Lidl.
Stopped Netflix and Amazon prime
Buying yellow sticker food
No more daily baths
Having my hair done will become impossible
It's the winter that will be the killer - TBH I am terrified

Frugality and being environmentally responsible go hand in hand. Reduce, re-use, recycle. It’s common sense that has been eroded by capitalism.

Two ways we can improve both our spending habits and the health of the owner are to stop wasting food and to stop using disposable nappies/sanitary products.

BingoBungle · 26/06/2022 19:38

Petrol, alcohol, and Pret (I don’t live in the UK and was horrified to discover, on arrival here post-pandemic, how expensive and crappy it had become).

Neverendingdust · 26/06/2022 19:58

Who’d have thought back in 2016 when we were promised the golden age of independence and financial superpower glory, that instead come 2022 we’d all be scanning MN threads for money saving tips as the cost of living spiralled unimaginably out of control. That opting not to take the car, cancelling the magazine subscriptions, avoiding having baths and pondering the dogs health care would be a normal discussion and that Lurpak would be over a fiver 🤦🏻‍♀️ It’s truly depressing AF.

The pandemic, Ukraine and Brexit have truly dealt us all the worst hand possible. The future looks even more bleak too! 😳

Libre55 · 26/06/2022 20:08

Totally avoid brands, unless they are on special. Heinz beans, 4 cans for£3.70. M&S own brand 35p a tin…..
