Diesel was 198p today, cheapest in town and up by 2pm from yesterday. The woman in the kiosk said it’s been jumping up by a few pence most days but also agreed the cost of oil is going down.

we should be rioting to be honest.

Were in probably the cheapest area of England for living costs and it was 199.7 yesterday for diesel in the cheapest garage in our town. I could have cried when I saw it. Where will it end.

well this is depressing. Most of this I do already.

my Aldi shop has started to jump to a point I’m uncomfortable with, so I’m going to have to start reigning in the odd treat. They may only be 30p but I probably don’t need the biscuits.

I’ve applied for a disabled bus pass and I recently used some Tesco clubcard points to pay for a disabled railcard.

I’m still WFH, which keeps travel costs down but but I’ll be using public transport a lot more as petrol is just so expensive. It’s definitely making me think twice about unnecessary journeys.

JinglingHellsBells · 26/06/2022 14:21

I have rarely bought pine nuts even before they were today's prices as I've always thought they were madly expensive , and don't actually add much to a recipe, bearing in mind the cost.

I am however addicted to almond butter.

thegcatsmother · 26/06/2022 14:21

The best Lurpak substitute I have found is the Waitrose own brand.

I use B&M for chocolate bars for packed lunches, laundry products and washing up liquid. I use Lidl for sliced cheese. Veg is local or Waitrose as it lasts longer.

I have an enormous stock of shower gel and shampoo from when we were living abroad, so we will work through that before buying more.

I have enough clothes, so will make do, and now dh is retired he lives in jeans or sports kit anyway. Ds is earning so can buy his own.

It's worth signing up to the Twinings website as they have offers on black tea during the year. I can normally make a decent saving and get free postage if I order enough. I have room to store it though.

For coffee, I buy the boxes of instant latte, cappuccinos, flat whites etc, for my one coffee a week, as I am a tea drinker. In a nice mug with a sprinkle of chocolate on top, it does the job.

why do you buy sliced cheese? Surely it's cheaper to buy a block and grate it yourself or even slice it? And choc bars are hardly essential in a lunch box. How about an apple ?

What do you want OP to come back and say? It's not the kind of thread that requires answers or updates.

To all of you cancelling pet insurance please shop around and reconsider- highly recommend Admiral and have had a 10k bill paid this year. It’s a hell of cheaper if something stupid happens.

We did this.

Our 'ManyPets' increased from £40 to £66 at renewal - for a no claims, 5 year old healthy dog.

Did not take up their kind offer and got a comparable cover from MoreThan for £32 per month (plus cash back via TopCashBack) 🙌

Orangesandlemons77 · 26/06/2022 14:26

I have been saving £80 a month using £20 off online Waitrose codes and filling my online basket with mainly Essentials products, finding them good quality and saving quite a bit

Got our shopping for 4 (2 adults and 2 teens) down to just over £80 a week doing this. On top of this I buy milk and bread from the shop nearby.

TheFormidableMrsC · 26/06/2022 14:28

I have found some really nice shampoo and conditioner in Home Bargains that contain hyaluronic acid and leave my hair in great condition. They are a pound each. I find soap rather than shower gel lasts longer and cleans better, especially on my smelly 11 yo DS.

Buying an air fryer has been a game changer and the difference in my bills is noticeable. I have a big range cooker and don't use it unless it's unavoidable. I like to drink wine and have always paid more for a decent bottle. However, I drank some with a friend and it was delicious and couldn't believe it was less than £4 a bottle in Asda. It's called "A Nice Drop of Pinot Grigio", there is also a Sauvignon Blanc. That is my weekly treat.

I am much more mindful of food and food waste and shop carefully. It's made such a difference and I batch cook where I can. Some of the things I've done I've annoyed myself I've not done before, I could have saved a fortune over the years. I'm also having a no spend 6 months on clothes. I've got so many and don't wear them enough so I've reorganised my wardrobe and have really enjoyed finding things I'd forgotten about and creating new outfits. It helps to unsubscribe from fashion stores so I don't get tempting emails. Not that I can really afford things but no point in torturing myself by looking!

When people stop driving so much. The refinery crack spreads are still pretty high. We also have a lot of refineries operating at >90% capacity, which simply isn’t sustainable for very long.

If a lot of those facilities go down for maintenance, fuel prices will sky rocket.

ClaudineClare · 26/06/2022 14:36

One thing I didn't know and may help someone out there - if you have hearing issues, however mild, and have a hearing aid (even if you don't use it all the time) you are entitled to a disabled person's railcard.

No one asked you to judge their choices. You don't know why she buys sliced cheese - maybe she only has one arm. FFS.

@a longtimeagoandfaraway. You can make great crisps yourself whilst the oven is on for something else. Thinly slice a good starchy potato (or 12!!) Drop onto an oiled baking tray. Drizzle oil over, sprinkle with seasoning and bake till just going brown. Allow to cool before eating(obviously) or you'll get a burnt tongue (speaks from experience)

BigSkies2022 · 26/06/2022 14:47

I'd already implemented a lot of these measures after reducing paid work hugely about 4-5 years ago, while still supporting DS through foundation year and university. But a new cut is charity donations - stopped a couple of payments, stopped giving to food bank, started claiming expenses from a charity where I volunteer. Still give time and donate clothes, furniture, etc rather than trying to sell them myself, but don't feel great about ending this support. Hoping it will be temporary while I try and build up savings.

  • Things I’ve been doing -
  • only buying clothes on vinted
  • all shopping done at aldi
  • selling everything I don’t need or use on FB marketplace/Vinted etc
  • cut subscriptions
  • only one takeaway per month (used to be two of three a week)
If it helps anyone, I have some HelloFresh codes I’m happy to share. It gets you a total of £42 off plus I think free shipping on one box. The first box is £22 off which should just about cover 2 adults for 4 meals. I always find there’s some left over for lunches too. Just let me know if you’d like the codes. Its tough out there at the moment and the other night I sat and had a bloody big cry about the world I’d brought my DC into :(
Bordesleyhills · 26/06/2022 14:49

Certainly watching what we buy. Make sure we have the basics in the cupboards- stock, herbs, oil etc then rice, pasta and cous- cous. Take advantage of yellow stickers and good to go bags. Keep the freezer well topped up and including more frozen veg as less wasteage. Not going out or having takeaways ( didn’t anyway) using chicken thighs not breasts. Anything like apples/ fruit being used and frozen . Milk powder in sauces not milk and trying not to use butter in anything but buttercream . Own brand all the way and use heron foods etc.

Im trying out other non branded items as an alternative to my normal buys. Some have been good others not so much. Have been impressed by Waitrose/M&S own brand baked beans, canned soup, essentials biscuits, loo rolls, dried pasta. Def worth a look if you have one nearby. Petrol and household fuel are out of control. I can’t see petrol over coming down in price, it never does. I understand that the cost of transportation is more expensive but I do think many companies have just looked at this as an opportunity to jump on the band wagon and charge more .
