canned soup, essentials biscuits

Things like this puzzle me.

It's cheaper if you are saving money to make your own.

FourTeaFallOut · 26/06/2022 14:57

It puzzles you? Come on Sherlock, you can riddle this one out. Why would any one buy biscuits and canned soup when they could spend their free time in the kitchen making these things? It'll come to you.

PIITORNS · 26/06/2022 14:57

@JinglingHellsBells Yep. Which "news"paper d'you reckon is behind it, the Heil or the Excess?!

You do have to wonder what they teach them on these pricey journalism courses these days....

@theoldhasgone This is a thread where posters are saying how to save money and how they have changed their shopping habits.

I don't see anything wrong in suggesting someone grates cheese or buys a block rather than buying processed (and expensive) sliced cheese.

I'm sure that poster can come back and stand up for herself rather than you wading in to judge someone else!

FourTeaFallOut · 26/06/2022 14:59

Sorry, wrong end of stick here. 😬

catscatscurrantscurrants · 26/06/2022 14:59

My car has gone, so all those costs are saved. The downside being, of course, that I have no transport at all. It was the last thing I could cut back on - I have no TV, don't go out, drink or smoke, all luxuries had already been axed.

Well personally I'm happy for journalists to write about this thread if it wakes people up to how many people are struggling, how even people on 'good' incomes are scaling back to absolute necessities

Well, they prefer to spend their free time telling posters on a forum how they only have time(according to you!) to buy biscuits and soup😂

I didn't know that you were in charge of the thread. Moaning at OP for not posting enough, moaning at another poster for posting... sorry we aren't all creating your ideal thread

Doubt it with fuel costs.
30p for a pack of biscuits, by the time you’ve bought the ingredients, cooked them in the oven and used hot water to wash up.

Tried to pm without success. 🙁

Lovemusic33 · 26/06/2022 15:11

Im buying less meat, less take aways, not eating out 😕

Buying more 2nd hand clothes than new.

Possibly not considering the price of the raw ingredients plus cooking costs etc

We don't all have time to cook everything from scratch either

Another thread where the OP posts once and disappears.
Oh well.. hope she's happy reading all these pages.

@JinglingHellsBells

Im sure threads are started, ( by those associated with MN?) - just for the advertising revenue. Topical subjects, no return from the OP.

Baby name threads are often similar…

My problem is that I don't think that I really have many places to make cuts.

  • I don't get takeaways
  • I haven't been for a meal out for about 2 years
  • When I look at my bank statement, it's bills, plus food.
  • I haven't bought any new clothes for about 2 years.
  • I don't drink alcohol or tea/coffee so there's no cuts to be made there.
  • My mobile phone is £6 a month and I can't find a cheaper plan (that has unlimited calls and texts so it's ultra good value).
  • I have a landline I don't use but I have to have that to have the internet. It seems like a total waste of money tbh. Can't seem to find a solution for that.
  • My leisure stuff is things like going to parks, feeding birds or squirrels, going on a short walk, it's all stuff outside so no fees.

The main way I think I could make cuts is to go to the shops at the time they do the yellow stickers and to buy my meals from the section in the fridge that has reduced items. I got a really nice wrap from there for 60p the other day. That could possibly save quite a bit of money. The other thing might be that when there are deals on, to buy more of those items (buy in bulk) instead of buying say two. A lot of these items keep for two years. When I see something like that I usually only get two of them.
I don't go to the hairdresser or have any beauty treatments like nails. I don't have a gym membership or go to any classes. I just can't find many areas to make cuts. My bills are on the best tariffs, I researched that years ago.

So maybe I simply need to look into bulk buying more as maybe that's where I'd save the most money, I don't know.

The other thing is, when I was doing well financially and things were very different I bought a backpack, an Osprey Rook 65 litre. It was £150. It was for a camping trip that I never went on, so it has never been used, it's brand new. I want to sell it as it's just sat in a plastic bag, doing nothing, and I don't think I'm likely to go camping. I could use the money to buy new shoes which I desperately need. Where do you think is the best place to sell something like this? Ebay? I've never sold on Ebay tbh. It is not that heavy so presumably I could post it wrapped up.

I'm not on any benefits I'm self employed just going through a rough patch. But when I look at where I can make cuts it's literally bills and food, all I buy is food. I need to gain weight so that makes it more tricky too.

@skybluee

What exactly DO you spend money on ??

I agree you can’t make any cuts to your spending if you’re not actually spending anything

user1497207191 · 26/06/2022 06:53

Lunchtime meal deals. Not paying £4 for a manky sandwich, crisps and can. I now buy ingredients and make my own sandwich and take crisps/drink from multipack. Probably less than half the price. Meal deal was only £3 a year ago - 33% price increase isn’t inflation, it’s profiteering!

Son a year ingredient prices gave gone up loads, plus the transport costs!

Rosewaterblossom · 26/06/2022 15:17

Is this going to be a catch 22 situation 😔 Where the less we buy because we simply cannot afford it or justify its price hike, the more it will go up to make up for less sales on it?

LuckySantangelo35 · 26/06/2022 15:18

JinglingHellsBells · 26/06/2022 14:24

I use B&M for chocolate bars for packed lunches, laundry products and washing up liquid. I use Lidl for sliced cheese.

why do you buy sliced cheese? Surely it's cheaper to buy a block and grate it yourself or even slice it? And choc bars are hardly essential in a lunch box. How about an apple ?

@JinglingHellsBells

i buy sliced cheese cos I’m lazy and can’t be arsed to hack into a block of cheese. I’d rather be doing other stuff. Ditto making my own soup or biscuits.

I go to gym everyday and will prioritise that over making everything from scratch. I would not have time for daily gym If I did that

Cookiecrumble22 · 26/06/2022 15:18

Heinze raviloli 1.63 a tin. The other brands just don't taste the same.

AnnieSnap · 26/06/2022 15:19

carefullycourageous · 26/06/2022 07:55

They will be horribly produced with lots of cruelty. I am not able to eat things where the animals have been so badly treated, so would rather reduce how many I eat rather than pay for cruelty.

Everyone has their own standards on this, but eggs are an area where many consumers are unwilling to reduce welfare category.

Well done/said @carefullycourageous We have our own happy hens, so no change with eggs.
Just cancelled Netflix
stopped buying organic (which really pains me)
We don’t eat meat or drink alcohol, so can’t save money there
I’m toying with cancelling my Labour Party Member membership. I have the retired rate though, so it’s only £2.50 per month

lightisnotwhite · 26/06/2022 15:19

Exactly this.
And soup may be cheap if you can make large batches and have an excess of veg. But I don’t have the freezer space for 6 tubs of carrot and coriander and nor do I want to eat it everyday. A tin the cupboard lasts years and I can get different flavours that don’t rely on me having to buy a volume of veg or having beans/ cream/spices/stock in.

?? Don't buy as many eggs as we normally did or chicken...

I've stopped travelling into work (was hybrid). I save £15 per day by not doing that.

It's crap because I live alone and would prefer to be in with collegues, but it seems like a waste when I can do my job just as well from home.

Decafflatteplease · 26/06/2022 15:20

I've seen a couple of people mention Aldi coffee. Is this instant coffee or cafetiere type coffee? I'm looking to get away from my cafetiere habit but don't really like instant coffee. Also it has to be decaff as per my username 😂 yes I'm fussy! If anyone has any pics.or links of what to look for in Aldi that would be great thanks

Svara · 26/06/2022 15:24

Cut back on anything processed or of low nutritional value. Only buying food worth the money so mostly basics, lots of fruit and veg, eggs are still relatively cheap and of high nutritional value so not cutting those! Making contacts to exchange labour for local food, surplus from farm, allotments, eating in season and whatever we can get.

lightisnotwhite · 26/06/2022 15:25

(also I secretly think soup is a bit rubbish and I also have to have thick crusty bread and butter and cheese with it to make it more appealing, all of which are now hideously expensive)
