I've always bought the large pack of Aldi toilet roll. It's nice and thick and at £6.29 for 24 rolls, I can't complain.

I've noticed Lidl prices have been increasing by a massive amount.

I'm talking 20p and 30p per item, why though. Any idea why loo roll has increased so much ?

Gifgaf sim is brilliant. No contract and you can change your monthly payments anytime.

Lidl toilet roll is reduced today. 24 rolls for £5.29 reduced from £6.89.

Not sure if you are aware but you are only insured up to £1000 per condition per year.

If people are changing insurance companies please read the small print. Avoid 12 month policies, go for cover for life and make sure their is no inner limits some insurance companies put a cap on things like CT scans, Cruciate surgeries, etc.

Can I recommend a halogen oven to anybody who wants to save money . We’ve had a few over the years and I seriously only use my main oven once or twice a week max . Can be purchased for about £40 and will definitely save you money on energy bills .

I cut down a lot on my expenditure a few years back when I retired so I have very little to cut back on.
We are on the verge of a huge recession, DH is a self employed builder and a lot of people have cancelled "jobs" and work is drying up. This is a repeat of what happened during the last two recessions.

I fear the same. I'm self employed and I'm struggling - massively.

RobertaFirmino · 26/06/2022 13:44

Much less meat (but that's a good thing really). Cheaper toiletries where we can as there are a few pricier things we get that are non-negotiable like Colgate Sensitive Instant Relief, Mitchum etc. I made some reusable pads to save using at least some disposables. Shopping around, using Home Bargains/B&M (which can save you ££ on so many things - don't be snobby about them!). Looking at offers/multipacks to see if they work out cheaper. Basic Sky, which can be cancelled completely if needed, no Netflix/Prime etc either. I'm also using the local library a lot more, I'd forgotten just how bloody fantastic libraries are! Do take a look at what's available in your own library and remember that many of them offer free emergency pads/tampons if things get dire.

Co- Op coleslaw - started another thread about this some time ago as it had increased from £1.25 to £1.85. Now increased again to £1.95.
Can’t find it in myself to forgive them for this 😒

Siepie · 26/06/2022 13:45

We're already vegetarian but did buy pre-prepared foods, e.g. Linda McCartney burgers. Some of them have more than doubled in price in the last year, so they're gone!

I now take instant coffee to work instead of paying 50p a cup for the office coffee machine.

dreamingbohemian · 26/06/2022 13:45

DH and I have gotten the apps for every shop near us (and Boots/Superdrug too)

We look at what's on offer every week and plan our shopping/meals around that. It's more time consuming yes, to organise and go to different shops, but we are saving quite a lot of money. (we walk/cycle so doesn't cost more to go to multiple shops)

If you sign up to the apps and to things like Sainsburys Smart Shop (where you go around and scan as you shop) you get extra offers and points. Even free food sometimes, like suddenly there's an M&S offer for a free loaf of bread.
And there are surprising finds, like Waitrose Essentials can be better value than what you find at cheaper shops.

I know not everybody has time for this but would recommend if you do.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 26/06/2022 13:49

@LuckySantangelo35 , not to mention less wasting of food.

I think it's inevitable.

DDog has managed to either rip a claw out or it’s split I think, I can’t actually see, but it’s the vets for her 2mro morning and glad I’ve still got insurance, a quick Google suggests worse case scenario of having to be anaesthetised to get his sorted. Having said that when our last DDog got to age 7, we did cancel but put the money aside which we used about half of during her final year, I was pondering doing it with current dog, but now not so sure.

Definitely pine nuts. Wtf is that all about? Are they from Ukraine?

Maybe. Our Ukrainian guest uses them a lot in her cooking.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 26/06/2022 13:51

I'm on disability benefits so already buy everything possible second hand so there's very little to stretch
I have cancelled Netflix and eyebrow waxing
Buy whatever coffee is on offer
Stopped buying Nespresso pods( machine is 12 years old!)
Value cheese and freezing bread, so it lasts.
Always take a drink out
I literally consider if every £ is worth its value to me.
For example I have my short hair cut and coloured every 6 weeks for £40( garden salon) works out at £1 per day and is worth every penny
I also pay my lovely dog Walker £50 per week as I'm unable to give my ddog a daily run, but his value to me is priceless and he is actually Fed better than me

CoastalWave · 26/06/2022 13:53

Agree Aldi is the place to go - their coffee is really cheap and tastes great. I'd run out yesterday, nipped to the local Spar and coffee was £6! So went to Aldi - x2 jars of coffee and x2 packs of biscuits for £4. Can't argue with that!

Also their washing powder and toilet paper are great essentials.

My worry over all this is that we've only ever been able to afford things by already being savvy. I've nothing left to cut. Now what?!

Just paid the gas/elec for the quarter - up from £300 last year to nearly £600. With a message that said on the bill, congratulations your usage is down 30%.

Bought my car 3 years ago because it only cost £42 to fill. It now costs me £72. That's another £120 a month on fuel alone.

My income isn't going up - in fact it's going down.

QueenCoconut · 26/06/2022 13:56

I refused to buy a donut from Greggs today
£1.70 for one ring donut !

RedHorsesAreDangerous · 26/06/2022 13:56

Treats of pretty much all kinds have gone unless on super super special offer or for special occasions - crisps; biscuits; takeaways; days out for anything that isn't birthday or celebration.

We already batch cook, compare prices, shop around, buy in bulk, buy everything except underwear and socks preloved (or second hand as it was known when I was a kid), batch cook, wonderbag (haybox principle).

We've already cut down to two meals a day. We already have no central heating. I already do two jobs. The middle aged nurse in the household already drags themselves off to work as many extra shifts as they can despite chronic back pain and a host of other issues.

I grew up like this. I am beyond furious that so many of us in a so called wealthy country are having to live like this again while the privileged inbreds at the top are laughing at us or even worse actively enjoying our misery.

I hate this joyless world we've created and I despise the I'm all right Jack philosophy. And unfortunately experience, logical observation of the probable paths ahead, and history tell me it will get a hell of a lot worse before it gets better.

I haven't been to the hairdresser since lockdown. I was spending a fortune every few weeks. Now I trim my fringe and the ends myself and wear my hair up.

Only use car for work and journeys of over 2 miles. In fact have just arranged to work from home more to save fuel.
Use air fryer instead of oven.
Showers instead of bath.
Switched to shopping at Aldi/Lidl/Asda as it's cheaper than Tesco's.
Turned heating thermostat right down.
Bought some polar fleeces ready for winter.
My National insurance contribution has gone up by £13 a month which hasn't helped.
Also going through my direct debits to see what I can cancel or renegotiate.

I needed pine nuts for a recipe last week. DH went to Tesco do me and came back with them spitting feathers.. almost £6 for a bag of pine nuts!!! If I'd have realised before he bought them I wouldn't have bothered with them!

Yes I noticed that last weekend 😳
