Oh and I've also messaged some of our friends and said please can we not do Christmas presents this year because it gets out of hand doesn't it?

I've messaged 3 friends and between them there is 10 children. Realistically that's at least £100-£150's worth of gifts isn't it?? So I've said please can we just do cards and 1 friend said "it's a shame she's sad about it as they don't have much family so enjoy our gifts (as we do theirs!) So I'm worried I've upset her, the other 2 were like "we've been thinking the same thanks for being so understanding of people's situations etc"

Tell her to spend the money she’d spend on your kids on an extra present for hers and wrap it in different paper?

that’s what we do for ours so they get a bit mor variety when gift giving was knocked on the head by our friendship group.

Pink lady apples, gala seem half the price but not as nice.

andrex loo paper, have come home today with Lidl own brand so will see what thats Like.

meat, have finally gone meat free due to cost. Though I’m happy to get a chicken pizza for example if it’s about the same as a vegi one, just not buying meat. I’m even cooking with quorn chunks rather than chicken now.

lurpak. Am buying Aldi version.

I've found a lot of fresh stuff isn't lasting even up to it's sell-by date recently. It's going off/mouldy really fast.

Same here. I wondered if it spends more time hanging around in depots, on trucks and in the back of the store waiting to be put out on display.

It's weird and it's not even store specific - but loads of fresh stuff just doesn't seem to last anymore. I don't know whether it's a poor quality thing or a storage issue in the depots etc.

@GeorgiaGirl52

Re large print books, I borrow e-books from my library & can then re-size the print when I'm using the library app.

Without sounding vain 😱 I often get told I've got nice hair and I just use tresseme shampoo in the back bottle I think it's called intense moisture or something. Only ever buy on offer when it's £3.50 for a large bottle. Condirionee I use Garnier natural banana one again only bought on offer. It's meant to be a hair mask (comes in a large round tub) but I use as conditioner. Smells lovely too.

Thanks I will give it a try, much cheaper than Olaplex so worth swapping :)

murderbythebook · 26/06/2022 12:39

@woody87 reading that back I can see the confusion!

I meant that instead of meals which have expensive sides (eg fajitas with guacamole, salsa, sour cream etc) we have plainer meals that don’t need sauces and fancy extras.

We are also eating more vegetarian meals with today’s delicious dhal a case in point

Dropping amazon prime. Stopped buying fairy detergent, cashew nuts, Andrex loo rolls and kettle crisps. Bought store brands instead. Looking to see if my shop could be cheaper from else where.

StridTheKiller · 26/06/2022 12:44

Light. I am disabled with limited mobility but now sit in the dark in daytime when DD is out. Many types of food which have rocket in price, ie Yeo Valley Yogurt, fruit smoothies.

Beautiful3 · 26/06/2022 12:46

@worriedaboutmoney2022 We did this too a few Christmases ago. Most people were pleased and wanted to stop anyway. However a couple were disappointed because their kids don't get much. Which doesn't make sense because, if they're not buying for my 2 children, they would have even more to spend on their own?! I was pleased because it meant my children ended up with much better presents from us, as I no longer had to buy for others.

christinarossetti39 · 26/06/2022 12:47

I used to buy Fevertree tonic water when it was on offer.

Just to drink - never buy spirits.

Have stopped doing that.

Hobbitlover · 26/06/2022 12:52

We haven't stopped/changed anything (yet).

doyouwantachuffedybadge · 26/06/2022 12:53

Sanitary products, second hand books, and condiments .Stopped buying new clothes a long time ago.

The Gas hob, we are replacing asap and I will only use it in an emergency. Feels like I'm burning money.

Berries are just stupid money now.

We have more fakeaways now. Pizza dough is time consuming but not hard. I can knock up a curry quite easily and have most of the basics for a Chinese meal.

What are you replacing it with @LaWench ? I thought gas hobs were cheaper to run than electric?

It's all so depressing and worrying.

InFiveMins · 26/06/2022 13:03

Soft drinks - I'm buying the cheap versions of Diet Coke, it's not as bad as I thought it would be actually.

Branded shampoo and shower gel. I buy supermarket's own version and it's absolutely fine.

VioletCreams · 26/06/2022 13:05

The people that have cancelled their pet insurance what are you going to do if your pet is unfortunately ill or injured? Some vet bills are in the thousands should they fracture a leg, need specialised investigations, etc. I am not trying to have a go as I get that things have to be cut somewhere but I would be devastated if I couldn’t afford to treat my cats if they were ill or needed surgery.

theoldhasgone · 26/06/2022 13:11

Have a friend who cancelled her pet insurance when covid hit, and has just been told her not-particularly-elderly dog needs an operation that will cost £10k. She determined not to have him PTS but I don't know that a GoFundMe will actually raise any money. I don't know what her choices are realistically.

Knotaknitter · 26/06/2022 13:14

@Rupertpenrysmistress I get audiobooks from my library service. It's packaged with the ebook service so the same app for both. I assume that the selection isn't as great as Audible but it's free. You just need a library card.

If you drive an elderly car you often have to use the super/premium unleaded, otherwise the car won't work! Mine is 18 years old, and whilst in theory it should be ok on the normal unleaded, it bounced around like a kangaroo when I tried it when petrol changed last year, so I switched to premium and it's been fine ever since.

It's still considerably cheaper to have run a reliable car for 18 years than to have bought new ones in that time.

I have an elderly car, and I find I get much better fuel consumption (25-30% better) using E10 petrol, with no discernible loss in performance.

Like many others, out of the window are: pet insurance, most branded food and cleaning products, days out, unnecessary shopping trips, coffees, snacks and meals from cafes and restaurants.

I'm buying Nivea face cream and whatever is cheapest in toothpaste, soap, hand wash and shampoo. Have to use Tresemme conditioner, as it is the only cheap one that untangles my hair, and I still use Mitchum deodorant, as it's so good, but noticed that the new bottle I bought has got smaller.

I don't need any clothes and could probably sell a few, and I will overcome my fear of the pressure cooker, which is solely DH's domain at present.

And we will sell our cottage in Scotland, as it now costs over £100 to drive there. (In advance of the pile on about how I am evil about having a second home in the first place, DFOD.)

Feel free to DM me if you're selling in Scotland - I'm looking and depending on £ and location obv, i may he a cash buyer

Binjob118 · 26/06/2022 13:16

Sunflower seeds are much cheaper and actually a good replacement for pine nuts.

linelgreen · 26/06/2022 13:24

The only thing we have reduced is the level of savings as we can always increase again in the future. I would rather do this than cancel things that would affect others eg cleaner, beautician, gardener and the local butcher, greengrocer and restaurants.

LuckySantangelo35 · 26/06/2022 13:24

If it’s one good thing to come out of all this it’s that more people might stop eating meat.

eating meat is so expensive and completely unnecessary

easiest way to save money in this shit show

LakieLady · 26/06/2022 13:25

Jenasaurus · 26/06/2022 12:22

Something I could make a saving on is shampoo and conditioner.

Can anyone recommend a shampoo and conditioner thats cheap but rehydrates your hair, the one I used to use is a ridiculous price but I am wary of the other ones as I used a cheaper (£1) shampoo recently and it made my hair looked like a wizards toothbrush when it dried. I like it to look glossy and sleek. Any recommendations appreciated.

The Aldi ones in the red bottles are good for the price. I use (what used to be) my usual John Frieda ones every 3rd or 4th wash though.

That’s what would worry me as there’s no way I could afford that without pet insurance. For things that can get done at my work I would get staff discount but if they were referred to one of the vet schools, etc for specialised surgery then there’s no way I could afford that.

I’m not going to lie I do have issues with people trying to pay for their pet’s treatment by Go Fund Me (unless it’s a rescue, etc), expecting other people to help out your vets bills when if you had taken out insurance in the first place then that would have been covered.

If economists are correct and this really does turn into the worst recession in our life time, then the simple truth is that a lot of people will have no choice but to cancel pet insurance . Then if the worse happens, will be putting their animals to sleep as it also saves them money on weekly food and care. I absolutely love my 4 dogs, but if it came to me choosing to pay £800+ to treat an Illness in my 9 yo dog, or heating my house for the kids for the entire winter, I would choose the heating.
