Real butter, nice coffee, not eating as much meat, free range eggs.

Mycatsgoldtooth · 26/06/2022 11:53

Aldi shop was £147 yesterday and I had meal planned. It would have been £110 three months ago.

TV license! Also trying not to eat (fasting) a couple of days a week which helps with the food bill (and weight loss!).

Hubby has also starting fasting which has helped our food bill! When baby arrives and I'm through with breastfeeding I'll be doing the same!

Sagealicious · 26/06/2022 11:57

Most food here has skyrocketed. A lettuce alone costs $6.50 where I am and in some areas it's even higher. Meat has also gotten very expensive. In some ways it's not really noticeable if you buy one thing and the price has gone up by only a small amount but it's certainly noticeable when you buy more than one thing and you find it all adds up. I do my main food shopping once a fortnight, I have halved the amount of things I buy yet I'm paying more than what I previously did.

Pantibliss · 26/06/2022 11:59

Far less days out anywhere. Today, for example, we're just staying at home reading, watching TV and playing computer games. As soon as you go out, there's potential petrol, coffee etc... Things were expensive in Dublin even before Ukraine. For example, Dublin Zoo was about 70 euro for our family of 3 when we went just before the war. You can up that to 100 with food etc... We're 2 well-paid professionals with only one child and we've agreed the zoo will be a once a year thing, if that, because 100 euro for a day out is extortionate. Meals out have had to become very rare too. Again, you're potentially looking at 60 - 70 euro for the 3 of us. I've cut down on luxuries like make up and skincare. Unfortunately, hospitality and leisure industries are really going to bear the brunt of this downturn. People just can't justify luxuries.

Nights out

LaWench · 26/06/2022 12:04

The Gas hob, we are replacing asap and I will only use it in an emergency. Feels like I'm burning money.

Berries are just stupid money now.

We have more fakeaways now. Pizza dough is time consuming but not hard. I can knock up a curry quite easily and have most of the basics for a Chinese meal.

2022username · 26/06/2022 12:06

I’m not doing great with reducing my expenses. I’m still eating out too often, but I’ve started being very careful over my gas and electricity usages.

eatingasatsuma · 26/06/2022 12:08

Real butter here too!

Tesco spread 85p for 500g.

catandcoffee · 26/06/2022 12:12

I've noticed Lidl prices have been increasing by a massive amount.

I'm talking 20p and 30p per item, why though. Any idea why loo roll has increased so much ?

Gifgaf sim is brilliant. No contract and you can change your monthly payments anytime.

LakieLady · 26/06/2022 12:16

Smallsheets · 26/06/2022 09:50

lurpak spreadable 500g was £5.05 in tescos. Shocking. I swear it used to be around £2.50. These price increases are beyond normal inflation, it’s shameless profiteering.

Whilst in theory we could afford to buy branded stuff, I feel like taking a stand and giving it a big swerve out of principle as own brand stuff isn’t nearly as expensive. If everyone did the same I wonder how quickly prices would come down.

A week or two ago, it was on offer in Sainsburys for £3.25 or £3.50, so I stocked up and got 6 tubs. I was getting it for £3.25 when it was on offer in Waitrose, when the offer ended it went up to £4.50. By the time I've exhausted my stockpile, it will probably be £5.50, and even £6 wouldn't surprise me.

My economies have been using the car less apart from work mileage and (no longer do a 17 mile round trip to go to Sainsburys and Lidl unless I'm going that way for work, when I get paid 45ppm for it!), hairdresser every 8 weeks instead of 6, only buying a newspaper on Saturday OR Sunday instead of both, and my summer months luxury of a monthly pedicure is now polish only.

Anotherselfemployedcleaner · 26/06/2022 12:16

To clarify, I only buy free range eggs from the supermarket (or my neighbours when they have a surplus). Even if they get more eggspensive (ha!), I still think they’ll offer good value nutritionally.

I was planning a shift to fully ‘green’ cleaning products for my business, but can’t do this without increasing prices (still looking at Bio-D for the future though). Everything I use now is, however, ‘leaping bunny’ stamped, and I won’t compromise on that (including my own laundry products/toiletries/makeup).

I needed pine nuts for a recipe last week. DH went to Tesco do me and came back with them spitting feathers.. almost £6 for a bag of pine nuts!!! If I'd have realised before he bought them I wouldn't have bothered with them!

Pine nut trees have a maturing period of 10 to 40 years. Compare that to almond trees, which take two to four years to harvest. Extracting the nuts is incredibly labour-intensive and this drives prices up

Pine nut pickers have to climb up to the top of the trees using ladders and have to hang on the trees in order to drop the nuts to the ground, which requires months of professional training

pinkhousesarebest · 26/06/2022 12:20

Meat -- has saved us a fortune.
And I have just acquired some ex battery chickens so we have our own eggs.
But bloody hell the price of nuts!

Jenasaurus · 26/06/2022 12:22

Something I could make a saving on is shampoo and conditioner.

Can anyone recommend a shampoo and conditioner thats cheap but rehydrates your hair, the one I used to use is a ridiculous price but I am wary of the other ones as I used a cheaper (£1) shampoo recently and it made my hair looked like a wizards toothbrush when it dried. I like it to look glossy and sleek. Any recommendations appreciated.

Rupertpenrysmistress · 26/06/2022 09:35

Thanks to this thread I have switched my cat insurance to many pets and saved £10 per month. Thank you.

Have already given up alcohol and switched down brands, I now do a monthly shop at Iceland on bulk products. I purchase toilet rolls on Groupon. If I have time, as I work full time, I pop into Poundland for certain products. Also certain essentials are cheaper in m&s😲. No more coffee out, this was one of my treats. Now looking to cancel audible, all a bit depressing as that is all of the things I enjoy. I just feel, as we are both working full-time we should be allowed the odd treat. Never really have take away for us, kids occasionally have Mcds.

We are really lucky though, I live close enough to everything to be able to walk. I could in theory walk to work but I do 13 hour shifts so a 40 minute walk after that is not ideal, especially if I am back in at 7am the next day.

However I do appreciate my travel expenses is much better than many.

If you were thinking of cancelling audible @Rupertpenrysmistress they might give you an offer when you get to the cancel page, they did this for me admittedly it was a while ago now but I was thinking of cancelling and went on to cancel and I think I got 3 months half price so I kept it for 3 months then cancelled

Giggorata · 26/06/2022 12:25

Like many others, out of the window are: pet insurance, most branded food and cleaning products, days out, unnecessary shopping trips, coffees, snacks and meals from cafes and restaurants.

I'm buying Nivea face cream and whatever is cheapest in toothpaste, soap, hand wash and shampoo. Have to use Tresemme conditioner, as it is the only cheap one that untangles my hair, and I still use Mitchum deodorant, as it's so good, but noticed that the new bottle I bought has got smaller.

I don't need any clothes and could probably sell a few, and I will overcome my fear of the pressure cooker, which is solely DH's domain at present.

And we will sell our cottage in Scotland, as it now costs over £100 to drive there. (In advance of the pile on about how I am evil about having a second home in the first place, DFOD.)

skybluee · 26/06/2022 12:25

My problem is that I don't think that I really have many places to make cuts.

  • I don't get takeaways
  • I haven't been for a meal out for about 2 years
  • When I look at my bank statement, it's bills, plus food.
  • I haven't bought any new clothes for about 2 years.
  • I don't drink alcohol or tea/coffee so there's no cuts to be made there.
  • My mobile phone is £6 a month and I can't find a cheaper plan (that has unlimited calls and texts so it's ultra good value).
  • I have a landline I don't use but I have to have that to have the internet. It seems like a total waste of money tbh. Can't seem to find a solution for that.
  • My leisure stuff is things like going to parks, feeding birds or squirrels, going on a short walk, it's all stuff outside so no fees.

The main way I think I could make cuts is to go to the shops at the time they do the yellow stickers and to buy my meals from the section in the fridge that has reduced items. I got a really nice wrap from there for 60p the other day. That could possibly save quite a bit of money. The other thing might be that when there are deals on, to buy more of those items (buy in bulk) instead of buying say two. A lot of these items keep for two years. When I see something like that I usually only get two of them.
I don't go to the hairdresser or have any beauty treatments like nails. I don't have a gym membership or go to any classes. I just can't find many areas to make cuts. My bills are on the best tariffs, I researched that years ago.

So maybe I simply need to look into bulk buying more as maybe that's where I'd save the most money, I don't know.

The other thing is, when I was doing well financially and things were very different I bought a backpack, an Osprey Rook 65 litre. It was £150. It was for a camping trip that I never went on, so it has never been used, it's brand new. I want to sell it as it's just sat in a plastic bag, doing nothing, and I don't think I'm likely to go camping. I could use the money to buy new shoes which I desperately need. Where do you think is the best place to sell something like this? Ebay? I've never sold on Ebay tbh. It is not that heavy so presumably I could post it wrapped up.

I'm not on any benefits I'm self employed just going through a rough patch. But when I look at where I can make cuts it's literally bills and food, all I buy is food. I need to gain weight so that makes it more tricky too.

blebbleb · 26/06/2022 12:26

Unless you're on the breadline I'd really advise against cancelling pet insurance. My cat was a picture of health until last year and she's cost me about 2.5k in claims since then. Wouldn't have been able to afford it without insurance.

Lindy2 · 26/06/2022 12:27

Going out for meals or to the pub for a glass of wine is no longer really affordable for us.

We still do a weekly take away and that's expensive enough but we enjoy it as our end of week treat.

I was in the West End, London yesterday looking for somewhere to get some lunch. I looked in a nice but fairly average cafe with a few outside tables (on a busy pavement on a main London road, so certainly not a particularly lovely location). It was £16 for a toasted panini with a bit of salad. We'd be looking at nearly £50 for 2 of us to eat basically a fancy sandwich and a drink!

Two McDonalds quarter pounder with cheese meals it was which we ate outside in a most beautiful, peaceful church yard just off Shaftesbury Avenue. £11.50 all in.

Without sounding vain 😱 I often get told I've got nice hair and I just use tresseme shampoo in the back bottle I think it's called intense moisture or something. Only ever buy on offer when it's £3.50 for a large bottle. Condirionee I use Garnier natural banana one again only bought on offer. It's meant to be a hair mask (comes in a large round tub) but I use as conditioner. Smells lovely too.

LakieLady · 26/06/2022 12:30

I've found a lot of fresh stuff isn't lasting even up to it's sell-by date recently. It's going off/mouldy really fast.

Same here. I wondered if it spends more time hanging around in depots, on trucks and in the back of the store waiting to be put out on display.

Floydthebarber · 26/06/2022 12:31

FreeRangeFloozy · 26/06/2022 09:35

I don’t think that is accurate. Most people practise brand loyalty.

I don't have particular brand loyalty, I just buy what I like, or feel like that week. Dh and I don't have a low income, I think combined it is about 65k, no nursery fees. But a holiday this year seems too extravagant (our last one was 2014 so I really would like to go away), I buy a lot of second hand clothes, like PPs have said, things like soft fruit are a luxury now, I've switched to lots of frozen veg, I stretch mince with lentils or beans, I am very worried about the gas and electric in tge winter. The price increases are hitting all but the top earners.

Re M&S salmon, discovered yesterday that salmon in a plastic bag on the shelf costs more than the identical product in the freezer!
